Chapter 7 - Scene 7:

You leap from your seat before anyone else. You run toward the terrorist, but is it the most sensible choice? Why didn't you flee? In one second, a scream. In another... You are on top of him.

A struggle.

You and the man roll on the floor. The cylindrical detonator slides and ends up under the seats. More out of luck and desperation than skill, you manage to ram the guerrilla's head against the edge of a seat, stunning him. You take his skull between your palms with the intention of smashing it again and knocking him out. But you hear a thunderclap; the force of lead snatches his temples from your fingers, and the guy's forehead is left with a hole right between the eyes.

You turn your head and discover Melody two steps behind you. Her face is one of terror, her skin draining from a whitish-pink to a ghostly pallor, and in her trembling hands she holds a freshly fired Beretta pistol.

"Are you okay?" she asks with a tremulous voice.

You nod slowly, still processing the situation.

The passengers finally react, and in a fit of panic and instinct, they jump and climb over the seats, fleeing in a herd toward the doors even though they are sealed and the train is still moving. One, more sensible than the rest, activates the alarm switch near a wall, triggering a bell that echoes throughout the train and sending a signal that alerts the National Security forces.

But before any help can arrive, the clatter of assault rifles reaches you. A bullet pieces a mother and the child she was holding in her arms. A man opens his mouth to scream, but ends up choking on his own blood when another projectile embeds itself in his throat.

The lethal swarm forces you and Melody to take cover between the seats, while the herd of civilians turns back to run in the opposite direction, trampling the dead and those who stumbled. A squad of guerrillas is unleashing a barrage from the back, perhaps intending to find out why the bomb didn't go off. Melody alternates between taking cover and leaning out to return fire, a task at which she proves decent even though she's scared to death.

Intending to support her, you search the dead man's body and grab the Trejo pistol from its holster. The metal of the weapon is a bright red, bearing a verse by Neruda inscribed on the right side, and the mark of Chávez's eyes on the left.
