Back on the battlefield…
The air itself seemed to shiver.
Sasuke stood just a few meters away from Gaara, his entire body cloaked in crackling lightning. The azure chakra danced violently across his skin like living serpents, sparking and snapping with each breath he took. His hair stood on end, and his eyes glowed with fierce intensity.
Across from him, Gaara stood calm as ever, but there was a faint flicker in his eyes, curiosity mixed with intrigue. The ground beneath his feet trembled softly as grains of sand began to stir, coiling protectively around him like living armor.
"Hm...?" Gaara's voice broke the silence, low and measured. His expression remained unchanged, but his aura shifted to one of alertness and increased focus.
Sasuke tilted his head slightly, lightning arcing from his jawline to his shoulder.
"Let's see if I can get some damage in this time," He muttered under his breath.
And then, Sasuke vanished.
Whoosh!
The moment he moved, a sharp gust of wind exploded outward, tossing dust and debris across the arena. The audience gasped as their eyes failed to keep up with his speed.
He wasn't just impressive anymore; it was inhuman.
"He's… he's gone!" Kiba shouted, his eyes darting across the battlefield.
"No, not gone," Neji murmured, Byakugan veins bulging slightly as he tried to track him. "He's moving too fast for ordinary eyes to follow."
The next second, an explosion of sand erupted in front of Gaara.
Boom!
A streak of blue light collided against the sand barrier, sending shockwaves across the field. The sparks burst out in all directions as lightning met sand, each strike echoing like thunder.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
With each impact, ripples spread through Gaara's sand shield like waves across water.
Inside the barrier, Gaara's expression finally shifted to a flicker of surprise crossing his usually stoic face.
"He's fast…" He murmured. "Just as fast as my sand…"
His sand swirled faster, reacting instinctively, barely managing to block Sasuke's next barrage.
'Unbelievable...' Temari whispered from the stands, her fan trembling slightly in her grip. 'That speed… even Gaara's sand can barely keep up!'
Lee leaned forward, his hands gripping the railing tight enough that his knuckles whitened. His usually cheerful face was deadly serious.
"Sasuke will consume a lot of chakra if he continues to fight this way…" He muttered, eyes sharp. "But that determination… that drive… It's the same fire I saw in him during our training."
The dust and sparks filled the air, creating a storm of motion and light around the two prodigies.
Sasuke appeared behind Gaara in a blink, his lightning-clad fist already swinging forward.
Boom!
A barrier of sand erupted in time to block, but the sheer force of the blow sent cracks rippling across it.
The shockwave tore through the ground, scattering pebbles and sand into the air.
Gaara's eyes widened just slightly.
'He broke through… even a little…'
And in that instant, for the first time, he got more serious.
Sasuke landed lightly, crouching on the cracked stone, lightning still buzzing across his arms. His chest rose and fell, his breath sharp, but his lips curled into a confident smirk.
"Hmph," He exhaled, eyes gleaming. "Seems your sand isn't invincible after all."
Gaara's calm expression returned, but now, there was something new behind it. A faint grin, almost imperceptible.
"Interesting…" He murmured, voice soft as the sand began to swirl again, faster, tighter. "Show me more, Sasuke Uchiha."
Sasuke straightened, his lightning intensifying as blue light flooded the field, illuminating both fighters like opposing stars.
The crowd leaned forward in unison, the tension palpable.
Naruto looked at the figure below, and he whispered, his voice a mix of excitement and unease. "Sasuke…"
This wasn't just a match anymore.
It was a clash of wills with two geniuses pushing the limits of everything they knew, both refusing to yield.
------
Naruto suddenly blinked as something clicked in his head. He turned to Sakura, his face lighting up with curiosity.
"Oh yeah!" He said, scratching his cheek. "By the way, Sakura... did you win your battle?"
Sakura froze mid-breath. Her shoulders twitched as she looked away, fingers fiddling nervously with each other.
"Umm… well… Naruto-sama..." She began, voice small.
Naruto blinked at her expectantly, leaning forward with that wide grin that made dodging questions nearly impossible.
"Shikamaru!" He suddenly saw Shikamaru, waving frantically to the side. "Hey! Shikamaru's right there!"
Naruto saw Shikamaru slouching his way toward them, hands in his pockets, and the same bored expression plastered on his face.
"Ah, Naruto," Shikamaru greeted, tone flat.
"Shikamaru!" Naruto grinned, pivoting to face him fully. "How did your match go, buddy?"
From a few steps away, Shino's expression barely shifted behind his high collar.
'No one asked about me…' He thought quietly, his bug companions stirring faintly within his coat in silent sympathy.
Shikamaru sighed, glancing at Sakura, who was subtly waving both hands in front of her face, mouthing, 'Don't say anything!'
'Such a drag,' He thought, rolling his eyes.
"My match?" He said out loud, rubbing the back of his neck. "Umm… I lost. To that Temari girl from the Sand village."
Sakura instantly gave him an exaggerated thumbs-up behind Naruto's back, mouthing, 'Good job!'
Naruto tilted his head, squinting suspiciously before grinning again. "You were probably too lazy to try becoming a Chuunin, huh? That's why you lost, right?"
A small smirk tugged at Shikamaru's lips. "You understand me well."
"Ah, don't worry, Shikamaru. You'll become Chuunin anyway." Naruto leaned in conspiratorially, lowering his voice like he was sharing a secret. He straightened up and threw a dramatic thumbs-up right in Shikamaru's face, grinning from ear to ear.
Shikamaru's mouth opened slightly.
"No way…" He muttered, a bead of sweat sliding down his temple.
A dark realization crept into his mind, heavier than any mission scroll.
'All I wanted was a life free from studying,' He thought miserably. 'And now I've landed myself in something worse. Why me of all people…?'
As Shikamaru sighed, Naruto turned his head and spotted someone lingering in the corner, half-hidden in the shade.
"Mm…" Naruto hummed before calling out loudly, "Shino!"
The quiet figure stiffened slightly and turned his head.
"Mm…" Shino murmured, his tinted glasses reflecting the light.
Naruto walked over and clapped a friendly hand on his shoulder, grinning. "Yo! How's it going, Shino?"
"Uzumaki Naruto," Shino said in his usual monotone, his posture barely changing.
Naruto kept smiling. "Heh, no need to be so formal, y'know? We're teammates from the same village after all!"
Shino adjusted his collar slightly, his face unreadable.
'Funny,' He thought. 'I don't remember him ever interacting with me this much before.'
"What do you want?" Shino asked bluntly, his tone calm but not unfriendly.
Naruto scratched the back of his head, unbothered. "Just wondering how your match was?"
Shino's brows moved slightly behind his glasses. "I ended up in a draw against my opponent."
"I see…" Naruto nodded, his grin softening. "Man, I'm sorry I was late. I would've loved to see your match."
For a brief second, the air between them shifted to light, simple, but genuine.
Shino tilted his head, a faint hum escaping him.
"It's fine," He said. "There will be other matches."
