A month had passed in the blink of an eye.
For Naruto, it felt both fleeting and endless as the days had blurred together for him beneath open skies. The road had become their home, and the rhythm of travel had settled deep into his bones.
Now, at long last, they stood before their destination.
"Tanzaku Town…" Naruto murmured.
The name seemed to carry weight in the air.
Before them sprawled a city unlike anything he had seen before. It was a sprawling, hedonistic hub nestled deep within the Land of Fire.
Tanzaku Town pulsed with indulgence and excess. The lights flickered from the lanterns even in daylight, casting colorful reflections across stone streets worn smooth by countless wandering feet.
Towering above it all was Tanzaku Castle.
The ancient fortress rose like a silent observer, its weathered walls and proud battlements standing in stark contrast to the chaos below. Time had gnawed at its edges, yet it remained majestic, casting a long shadow over the town beneath it.
It was almost as if it was judging the revelry unfolding at its feet.
Under that shadow, the streets twisted into a maze of temptation.
Casinos lined the avenues, their doors wide open, spilling out the clatter-clatter-clatter of slot machines and the sharp snap of shuffled cards. Taverns overflowed with rowdy patrons, drunken laughter bursting out in waves along with the clink of glasses and the heavy scent of expensive sake.
The festival stalls crowded every corner, banners fluttering overhead, decorated with long vertical poem-card strips that swayed gently in the breeze, giving the town its name.
The air was thick with the scents of grilled meat, sweet dumplings, fried dough, incense, and alcohol. And it all mixed together into a heady aroma that made Naruto's stomach growl reflexively.
"This place is…" Naruto exhaled, eyes wide. "…loud."
Jiraya chuckled beside him. "That's putting it mildly, kid."
Unlike Konoha's disciplined, military order, where every shinobi walked with purpose, Tanzaku Town thrummed with lawless energy. The wealthy socialites draped in silk passed by desperate gamblers with hollow eyes.
And the mercenaries leaned against walls, arms crossed, chakra faint but sharp.
Somewhere, luck was being made and lost every second.
It was a place where money spoke louder than loyalty.
A place where celebrations never truly ended, even when tragedy struck.
Naruto could feel the pulse of the town beat against his senses, chaotic and indulgent. Part of him felt wary while another part of him, shaped by memories from another world and the calm darkness of the Shadow Monarch within him, watched with quiet interest.
"So this is where she's hiding…" Naruto muttered.
Crack! Crack...
Jiraya stretched his arms above his head, joints popping.
"If Tsunade's anywhere, it's here... gambling, drinking, drowning in debt." He smirked. "Just her style."
Naruto snorted softly but didn't reply. His mind drifted back over the past month.
The distance between Konoha and Tanzaku Town wasn't particularly long, but they had taken their time very deliberately.
They hadn't rushed or even stopped often.
The forest clearings became training grounds, and the empty roads became sparring rings.
Crackle… pop...
Jiraya had been honest from the start.
"I don't have much left to teach you in terms of techniques," He had said one night, sitting by a crackling campfire. "You already grasp things too fast."
So instead, he refined what Naruto already had.
Jiraya started with Taijutsu first.
Again and again, their fists clashed, and their feet slammed into the ground until Naruto's muscles screamed and his lungs burned.
Jiraya corrected his stance, his timing, his breathing. Every mistake was pointed out mercilessly.
Then came Rasengan.
Hours spent compressing chakra, stabilizing rotation, increasing density.
Naruto's control sharpened until the spinning sphere hummed smoothly in his palm.
Jiraya watched with narrowed eyes, both impressed and unsettled by how quickly Naruto adapted.
And lastly, he focused on the Summoning Jutsu.
Hand seals slapped together with the blood smeared across thumbs, as his chakra surged.
Jiraya pushed him harder each time, forcing Naruto to draw deeper, steadier power.
Through it all, Naruto never complained.
At night, when Jiraya slept, Naruto often sat awake, eyes closed, feeling the shadows stir quietly within him. He kept that power leashed and controlled.
Standing now at the edge of Tanzaku Town, Naruto clenched his fist slowly.
'This place reeks of temptation,' He thought. 'Perfect for someone like Tsunade… and dangerous for everyone else.'
Jiraya glanced at him, sensing the shift. "Don't tense up. We're close now."
Naruto glanced sideways at Jiraya, taking in the way the old man's eyes were practically shining as he looked over the chaotic sprawl of Tanzaku Town.
The excitement rolling off him was almost tangible, like a child let loose in a candy store.
Naruto clicked his tongue, and then, very deliberately, poured cold water all over it.
"Pervy Sage," He said calmly, tilting his head. "Do you even know where we're supposed to find her in this entire town?"
The words landed with impeccable timing.
Jiraya froze mid-step. His raised foot hovered awkwardly in the air before slowly coming back down with a soft tap. The grin on his face stiffened, then cracked. His shoulders sagged just a little as reality caught up to him.
"…Ah."
Naruto watched as the realization sank in.
Tanzaku Town wasn't a single gambling den, but it was a sprawling maze of casinos, taverns, underground halls, and back-alley card rooms.
If Tsunade wanted to disappear here, she could do it effortlessly.
"Well… when you put it like that…" Jiraya scratched the back of his head, face twisting. He let out a long groan. "Tch... Finding Tsunade isn't exactly like knocking on a door and asking politely, huh?"
Naruto raised an eyebrow, unimpressed.
"You're the great Toad Sage," He deadpanned. "Don't tell me you didn't think that far."
"Oi, brat, give me a break." Jiraya shot him a look. He waved a hand dismissively, then sighed again. "Alright, alright. We'll figure it out."
His stomach suddenly let out a loud grrrrll.
Both of them paused.
Jiraya coughed lightly. "But first… let's find a place to eat something. We'll search for her later."
Naruto's serious expression cracked instantly. He grinned and rubbed his stomach in exaggerated circles. "Finally, something we agree on. I thought you'd drag me straight into a casino or something."
Jiraya snorted. "Don't tempt me."
The two of them stepped deeper into the town, swallowed by the noise and color.
Naruto's eyes darted everywhere, taking it all in. Compared to Konoha, this place felt wild and unrestrained.
People brushed past them without a care, voices loud, emotions raw.
'Feels like everyone here is either chasing luck… or running from something,' Naruto thought quietly.
They eventually found a modest restaurant tucked between a casino and a pawn shop. Wooden signs creaked above the entrance, and the warm smell of broth and grilled meat wafted out.
Inside, the atmosphere was noisy but welcoming.
They took a seat near the window. Bowls were set down with a clunk, steam rising invitingly.
Naruto dug in immediately, chopsticks moving fast.
"Mmm... this is good!" he said between bites.
Jiraya chuckled, watching him eat. "You really are Kushina's son. You've got the same appetite."
Naruto paused for half a second, then continued eating, expression softening just a bit.
After they finished, Naruto leaned back, satisfied, while Jiraya paid the bill with a casual flick of his wrist.
"Alright," Jiraya said as they stepped back onto the street. "Now we gather information."
Naruto smirked faintly. "Which means you're going to gamble or flirt."
"Information comes in many forms," Jiraya replied smugly.
They walked through the streets slowly, eyes scanning signs and crowds, feet carrying them instinctively toward the busier districts.
Somewhere here, Tsunade's name would surface.
Fwoom...
Eventually, as dusk began to creep in and lanterns flickered to life, Jiraya clapped his hands together.
"First things first... Let's get a hotel room."
Naruto nodded. "Good idea... No point wandering all night."
They continued walking, weaving through the crowd, the lantern light's glow reflecting in Naruto's eyes as his mind quietly worked.
"This town is a den of chaos," He thought. "But chaos always leaves traces."
And if Tsunade was here, they'd find her sooner or later.
