Chapter 64 - Sneak Attack

A camper was driving along a snow-covered, deserted road. After a while, the girl touched her stomach.

"Do you have anything to eat?"

Logan didn't answer. He simply pulled a loaf of bread from the storage cabinet beside him.

Seeing the bread, Rogue quickly pulled off her gloves and tore into it, devouring each bite like she hadn't eaten in days. The corners of her mouth curved into a small, grateful smile as the hunger pangs began to ease.

Logan glanced over at her from the driver's seat, his expression unreadable. Though he didn't say anything, the sight of her wolfing down the bread stirred an emotion he rarely felt—pity. How long had this kid gone without food?

"So what's your real name, kid?"

Logan grunted, taking a puff from the cigar clenched between his teeth.

She paused mid-bite, crumbs falling onto her lap.

"Marie."

She said through a mouthful. Then, after swallowing, she added.

"My real name's Anna Marie."

Logan gave a small nod, eyes on the road.

"Rogue it is then."

The silence stretched between them, broken only by the hum of the engine and the occasional crunch of snow under the tires. Rogue tugged off her hat, revealing her white streak of hair, and ran a hand through it with a sigh of relief.

"So... what about you?"

She asked, hoping to break the silence.

"What do I call you?"

Logan didn't answer immediately. His gaze remained locked on the road ahead, but she caught him adjusting the dog tag hanging from his neck.

"Wolverine."

Rogue read aloud, squinting at the inscription on the metal tag.

"Were you in the military or somethin'?"

Logan exhaled slowly, a cloud of cigar smoke swirling around him.

"Somethin' like that."

Before Rogue could press further, the camper suddenly lurched as Logan slammed on the brakes.

"Whoa! What's wrong?"

Rogue asked, gripping the armrest to steady herself.

Logan's jaw clenched.

"Tree's down. Big one."

He pointed at the enormous tree trunk lying across the road, blocking their path entirely. Snow dusted its branches, but it was clear to Logan that this wasn't just a natural fall.

Someone had put it there.

Logan narrowed his eyes and cut the engine.

"Stay here."

He ordered gruffly, pulling his claws out with a snikt as he stepped outside into the freezing air.

"Like hell, I will."

Rogue muttered, peeking through the windshield.

As Logan approached the fallen tree cautiously, his senses kicked into high gear. The scent in the air wasn't right—something wild and familiar lingered nearby.

Before he could react, a hulking figure lunged from the treeline with a feral roar.

"You're barking up the wrong guy, bub."

Logan growled under his breath.

The massive mutant tackled Logan, sending him flying backward into the snow with a heavy thud. Logan barely had time to get back on his feet before Sabretooth swung a heavy fist, knocking him into the side of the camper van.

Inside the vehicle, Rogue gasped as Logan's body slammed against the metal with a loud bang.

"Logan!"

Sabretooth grinned, baring sharp teeth.

"Didn't think I'd find you way out here, runt."

He snarled, advancing toward Logan.

"Been a long time."

Logan wiped the blood from his mouth, his claws gleaming in the pale moonlight.

"Who the hell are you?"

The two mutants collided again, exchanging blows that would've crushed ordinary bones. Each strike was brutal, a testament to their shared healing abilities that allowed them to fight without restraint.

Logan slashed across Sabretooth's chest, leaving deep gashes that began closing almost instantly. Sabretooth responded by grabbing Logan by the throat and hurling him across the road.

Inside the camper, Rogue frantically unbuckled her seatbelt and threw open the door. She wasn't going to sit idly by while Logan fought alone.

As Rogue climbed out, Sabretooth noticed her.

"Well, well."

He sneered.

"What do we have here?"

Rogue froze under Sabretooth's predatory gaze, fear creeping in as he stalked toward her.

"Stay away from her!"

Logan roared, charging at Sabretooth and slamming him into the snow.

The two tumbled in a flurry of fists and claws, but Rogue knew she had to do something. Desperation surged within her as she reached for Logan's discarded jacket and found what she was looking for—a hunting knife tucked inside.

With trembling hands, she gripped the knife tightly.

As Sabretooth pinned Logan down, ready to strike a killing blow, Rogue lunged.

She stabbed Sabretooth in the arm, the blade sinking deep.

He howled in rage, more from surprise than pain, and swung wildly, knocking Rogue to the ground. But the distraction gave Logan the opening he needed.

With a roar, Logan buried his claws deep into Sabretooth's side and twisted. Sabretooth growled in pain but managed to shove Logan off, retreating into the shadows with a snarl.

"This ain't over, runt."

Sabretooth hissed before disappearing into the night.

Logan panted, watching his old enemy vanish into the darkness. He turned to Rogue, who was still on the ground, shaken but unharmed.

"You, okay?"

He asked, offering her a hand.

She nodded, taking it and pulling herself up.

"Yeah... thanks."

Logan gave her a brief, approving nod.

"Told you to stay in the car."

Rogue smirked despite herself.

"Yeah, well... you're welcome."

With a small chuckle, Logan shook his head, sheathing his claws.

"C'mon, kid. Let's get outta here before he comes back."

They climbed back into the camper, and Logan restarted the engine. The night was far from over, but they had survived—for now. As the vehicle rumbled forward, Rogue glanced at Logan with a newfound sense of admiration.

"Hey, Logan?"

she asked softly.

"Yeah?"

"You really are a hero, you know that?"

Logan gave her a sidelong glance, a faint smile playing on his lips.

"Don't push it, kid."

After a moment, Rogue gathered her senses and looked around. She saw the windshield shattered and a large tree trunk pinning Logan to his seat, lying unconscious.

Panicked, she struggled to release her seatbelt so she could check on Logan. But despite her efforts, the belt was jammed, and her strength couldn't free it.

Meanwhile, Logan began to stir. The massive wound on his chest started to close rapidly.

Within seconds, the injury had fully healed around the tree stump.

This was Logan's superpower: his healing factor!

Rogue was stunned by what she saw. She had assumed Logan's powers were limited to his metal claws but never expected his ability to heal so quickly.

"Are you alright?"

Logan asked.

Rogue snapped out of her daze.

"I'm stuck."

Suddenly, Rogue became aware of the gasoline odor and realized the car was ablaze.

Logan, sensing danger, unsheathed his claws and became vigilant, his acute senses surveying the environment.

Sabretooth, recognizing Logan's momentary distraction, seized the opportunity to launch the tree trunk.

In the van, Rogue, in a state of panic and seeing Logan trapped and the fire spreading, frantically pulled at her jammed seatbelt.

As Sabretooth approached, a wave of panic overtook her, and tears streamed down her face.

Then, an energy beam cut through the air, repelling Sabretooth.

Emerging from behind him was a figure in leather attire. Scott, with his red-tinted visor, touched the device, activating it.

Zap!

A red energy beam erupted from Scott's visor, unleashing his signature power—a concussive force from his eyes.

Sabretooth, sensing the imminent threat, dodged the blast by a hair's breadth.

Bang! Bang!

Slash! Slash!

The sounds of senbon and large shuriken embedding and cutting into flesh resonated around them. A wave of lethargy overcame Sabretooth, and he succumbed to slumber.

Shortly after, he was on the ground, unconscious, his arms severed by the large shurikens, blood seeping from the ragged stumps.

Regaining consciousness, he realized he had lost not only his arms but also his legs. Incapacitated, he lay there.

Yet, his body, endowed with a regenerative ability akin to Logan's, slowly began to restore the severed limbs.

Sabretooth possessed the same self-healing ability and immortality as Wolverine. However, in terms of raw strength, speed, and senses, Sabretooth was superior.

While Sabretooth's body healed, Scott was less fortunate. He had lost an arm and a leg and lay on the ground, writhing in agony.

"Ahhh!"

Suddenly, a group of masked Anbu in white camouflage uniforms appeared from the snow, advancing slowly.

They proceeded with caution, eyeing the three mutants as if they were still a threat.

"Fox, Dog, use the tranquilizers."

One commanded.

"Yes, sir."

They acknowledged.

The Anbu were highly skilled. Two operatives swiftly pulled tranquilizer guns from their belts, taking aim at Sabretooth.

"Zing! Zing!"

The darts struck Sabretooth, and the potent tranquilizers quickly put him to sleep. Even in unconsciousness, Sabretooth's body continued to heal.

As the Anbu neared Scott, he lifted his remaining hand to remove his visor. A fierce red beam erupted from his eyes.

"Boom!"

The blast instantly pulverized nearby trees and caused an explosion on an adjacent mountainside, triggering an avalanche.

The blast's shockwave knocked several Anbu back. Yet, despite the blast's apparent destructive force, it did not dismember them. They swiftly got back up, enduring the pain, and dodged to evade further injury.

As the avalanche rumbled down the mountainside, snow and ice engulfed the area, and visibility dropped to near zero. The masked Anbu moved with precision, taking advantage of the chaos to restrain Scott and Sabretooth.

"Secure them! Move!"

One of the masked operatives barked.

Two Anbu swiftly wrapped a power-suppressing collar on Scott designed to negate mutant powers, while others injected more tranquilizers into Sabretooth's body, ensuring he wouldn't recover anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Logan stirred on the car seat tearing the thing to pieces, his healing factor already mending the hole in his stomach and bruises caused by Sabretooth's sneak attack. The stinging cold air, mixed with the smell of gasoline, snapped him fully aware.

"Rogue!"

Logan muttered as he scrambled to his feet.

Inside the burning car, Rogue was coughing from the thick smoke filling the vehicle. Flames licked at the seats, and she could feel the intense heat radiating all around her.

Logan staggered to the car's side and slashed through the jammed seatbelt with his claws. Rogue tumbled forward into his arms, gasping for breath. Without a second thought, Logan cradled her and leaped away from the car just as it erupted in a fiery explosion behind them.

"Are you okay?"

Logan asked, concern in his gruff voice.

Rogue nodded, though she was shaken.

"Yeah... thanks."

Before Logan could respond, the crunch of boots in the snow alerted him. He turned to see the group of camouflaged Anbu closing in, their masked faces unreadable.

"Stand down, Wolverine."

One of them ordered, his voice calm but firm.

"You don't want this fight."

Logan snarled, popping his claws with a metallic 'snikt.'

"You're not getting the girl."

He growled.

The Anbu soldiers remained poised, undeterred.

"We only want the girl."

The leader said coolly.

"We also want them."

He pointed toward Scott's and Sabretooth's unconscious bodies, as one kept regenerating.

"Why?"

Logan demanded, his stance tense.

"And who the hell are you?"

The leader didn't answer, signaling with a nod instead. Two Anbu quickly threw a containment field over Sabretooth, restraining him in a glowing net designed to inhibit healing factors.

Logan's keen senses told him these people were well-prepared, maybe even trained specifically to handle mutants like him and Sabretooth. He knew a fight against them would be brutal, but he wasn't the type to back down.

Just then, Rogue tugged at Logan's sleeve.

"Logan... We need to get out of here."

He glanced at her, then at the Anbu. There were too many unknowns—and with Scott and Sabretooth incapacitated, sticking around wasn't worth the risk.

Logan growled pointing with his claws.

"Over my dead body, bub."

He warned the masked Anbu.

The Anbu leader gave a small nod of acknowledgment.

"We'll, I hoped I didn't have to do this to you, Wolverine. Hope next time we cross paths again you stay out of the way."

The Anbu leader lifted his hand, and used his index and thumbs to form a diamond shape, to perform his Clan's unique Jutsu.

"Mind Shatter Jutsu!"

Logan's eyes went blank as the Yamanaka Clan Jutsu destroyed the last 24 hours of his memories. The Yamanaka Anbu leader next knocked out Rogue and scooped her up into his arms, her weight light as a feather. He sprinted toward the treeline just as the avalanche fully descended, burying the road and cutting off any pursuit from anyone following.
