Chapter 6 - 6. Damage Assessment

As my feet landed in the shallow water at the edge, i looked up at my ship to see if i could see much. Given the mangled state of the engine hanging over the edge of the small cliff things did not seem good. I looked up the stream to see if there was a way up, none, lokking down stream however, it appeared part of the cliff was almost a 45 degree angle slope, appearing to be man made, and not natural. I made my way along the 300 feet of the rivers edge to the more gentle slope and made my way up.

Looking at the ship… it was in a sorry state to say the least. Both engines were mangled and probabbly unuseable, engine two was also hanging from a very bent and very loose strutt… the second i try to move the ship it would fall off. The hull had gouges and chunks missing all over but miraciously the interior was still sealable. The belly of the ship was burried about a foot into the ground, perfectly lined up so that on the mangled remains of the right wing hung over the edge of the cliff.

"So i cant fly the ship to get it repaired… and i cant contact anyone because all my systems are fried. Im stranded in the middle of no where with nothing to help. Please let the cargo bay door just be blocked and not bent…"

I walked somberly to the rear of the ship. When i looked at the door my heart sank. Up near the top of the door, a large piece of scrap was stuck in the back of the ship, embedded into the hull. And it curved blocking the door. At least a plasma cutter would solve that issue but the damaged systems were going to be a pain to repair. It was really the only room in the ship for a large majority of the ships on board computer systems and avionics.

"No point sulking… i can at least get the door opened and get a good idea of what i can do."

I spent the next 8 hours after climbing to the top of the ship cutting away at the thick piece of scrap metal blocking the door. Once it was finally cut and out of the way i made my way back down to the ship with the setting sun. I grabed the crank on the outside of the cargo door, and began cranking. It opened like a charm. What really surprised me was the billow of black smoke that rapidly vacated the ships interior.

"It seems something is still on fire… great…"

I went back inside, now that the smoke had an easy route to clear out, i followed the thinning trail to the source.

"And there goes the ships batteries for emergency power…"
