Chapter 8 - ["Missing in The Village"]

On this day inside Uli Village, the Sun shines down on all the hard-working farmers. Yu smoothly became integrated within the group of hardworking men, most of them fathers or grandparents doing their best to get as much food as possible for both their families and jobs. Their hands were dried and course, their body malnourished, able to see their ribs and cheek bones. No matter how much effort they put into the land they could only get a basket of berries and as they continued to work hard Yu unconsciously continued to look for a situation for the land being so dried and for the barrier at the very end of the village, encircling it. No matter how many days went of no food of any sort he continued to stay up long nights searching for the solution of this villages problem. He roamed around the villages farming fields, looking up into the night sky covered in the barrier shaded yellow. He then took a deep breath speaking up at the sky "what am I doing here, why do I feel like I had something I needed to do here. This place, the people and the animals are all starving but for some reason they don't show it."

"How are we still alive..." Then from the moonlight dale appeared, both meeting eye to eye. "I knew you would be here Yu, are you thinking about the crops?"

Yu then responded. "No, it's just nothing is growing, everything is dry. The grass, the soil, the trees, even the water we have tastes like it's not even water."

Dale laughed, responding. "Water doesn't have a taste, us old folk are still doing are best no matter what cards we're dealt. We just want to feed our families."

Yu then gazed down at the ground. "Hey, are you hungry?"

Dale looked at him, his eyes showing not a sign of suffering. "Surprisingly I feel full!" Yu then sighed as he looked at Dale, grinning. "Yep same!"

After, both sat down stargazing. Both talking about the sky, stars, the family and friends. Then after a long night Yu heard something extremely weird from the person sitting next to him, looking over to him to see the face of someone who has no regrets.

"Yuno, if something happens to me...nevermind" Dale then stood, gazing down at Yu. "Goodnight, see you tomorrow!" And as he walked away, not giving the chance for Yu to say it back, he sat there confused. Not just confused but an eerie feeling of someone watching him and as he stood up, the place became extremely quiet. The wind no longer blowing, the air feeling as if it stopped, and the dried tree leaves standing still. Yu looked around feeling slight panick, his instincts telling him that danger was nearby but not knowing where it's coming from and as he stood there, hearing a twig snap, instantly turning around to see absolutely nothing but darkness. Then the wind began to blow once again, much colder than before and the trees blowing with the wind.

"Wh-what was that..." Then a notification appeared infront of him, glitching and glowing a crimson red

[Dementine] [Mind has gone further]

Yu's eyes widened as his head began to pound. "Whats going on...why is this happening...how did he know....how did they know...."

Suddenly he awoke, hearing conversation from the front of the inn. Then someone knocked on his door and as he stood and opened it, the beautiful girl with a maid outfit stood there looking down then looking up nervously. "H-hello Yuno! U-uhm, have you heard the news?" He gazed at her, rubbing his head. "News??"

He then saw a slight smile from her, as she explained. "Well Dale has gone missing, along with the rest of his family." His eyes widened, responding. Dale...is missing, wait his whole family!!"

She gazed down "yeah, along with a few more people too...the last place they were seen was apparently out at night wondering in the fields."

Yu stood there, absolutely confused to how this could happen, especially in a village where they couldn't go in and out from. Then a realization hit him, giving Yu a slight dizzy spell as he put his hand on his forehead. "R-right..I'm not from here, I'm an adventure...no I was supposed to graduate a while ago...how could I...forget.."

She then looked up at him, her purple eyes piecing him. "Are you okay Yu?"

He then put his hand on her shoulder, moving her aside then quickly walking down stairs to the front of the inn. He then began to look around, spinning in a circle as the memories of the month he spent in this village and also the memories outside of it rushed his mind. "Wh-whats going on...how could I forget it all...hypnotized? No magic, it has to be magic for me to forget everything even my life beforehand. My quest was an S rank class, shortage of both food and water." Then he remembered what Khali stated, repeating her words. "Magic based problem, the barrier, the shortage...it's been a month, and no one died from starvation, dehydration or even physical exhaustion. The barrier has to be keeping them alive....but the memory loss..."

His head continued to pound as the only thing he couldn't remember was the night before. He tried and tried but he couldn't remember a single detail, besides Dale's unusual words before he left. He then looked around, gazing at everyone as he walked to the fields. "...you can see every detail of their bones, the old lady that helped me understand how to check soil, and parasites, Dale and Matt helping me get around without issue, even giving me some of their food. Now that lady's grandchildren are here, working harder for their missing grandmother. I wonder why only Dale's family was taken but the other missing peoples are just a single family member" Matt then approached him, walking up the small hill, and as he approached him, they both gazed at each other in the eyes. Matt then spoke a few words. "Dale is gone." Yu looked into his eyes, seeming drained as if the life was sucked out of him. He then responded, "Yeah I know, do you have any idea where he is...and his family too."

Matt's eyes pieced him, scowling. "Isn't it obvious, their all dead." Yu then clenched his hand, "why say that, maybe they're all still alive."

Matt then grit his teeth, his voice shaking. "No way they are alive, after all, there's nowhere else to go since we're trapped here."

Yu's eyes widened, realizing that Matt knew about the barrier. He then spoke up, filled with anxiousness. "So, you know about the barrier..?"

Matt nodded. "This place, there was no use in saying anything because everyone began to lose their memories, replacing with some that didn't happen at all...do you know how many adventures accepted that quest of ours to help this village?

Yu looked at him confused. "H-how many..?"

Matt responded. "There are 200 people in this village, almost half are adventures that lost their memories."

Yu then responded quickly, filled with confusion. "Wait but Khali said nothing about how many people failed!"

Matt then looked out to the glowing golden barrier. "This barrier alters not just the people inside but also the people outside, it used to be a time barrier to limit weapons such as guns and futuristic tools because the people of this village were scared of change. Then one day the barrier changed, disabling all technology and whoever who stayed within it for 2 days or more would lose their memories."

Yu looked out to the farmers. "It also stops I'm you from dying, specifically from malnourishment and dehydration too, right?"

Matt chuckled. "Honestly once this barrier drops, us villagers will most likely die in seconds due to no food or water for months on end."

Yu then began to open and close his hand over and over. "S-so is there a way? Do you know anything that could help me save this village."

Matt then glared at him, it not reflecting hatred or anger but concern. "I'm sorry but no matter what I tell you now, we will all die either way. You should focus on personally escaping, stay away from anything unusually colored as much as possible, that's all I can tell you. You're not hero kid, so just get out of here" He then began to walk back to the fields helping the children who were working hard.

Yu looked at him, then sighing as he thought."I can't be your guy's hero if you don't give me anything to work with " he then felt the same feeling he felt from when he first came into the village, a feeling he felt throughout his time in the village as well. "It's... quiet...why can't I hear them, how are they not noticing this...someone...is watching me...no, not just me...us."
