Sitting in the Bridge Conference Room were the senior staff alongside the science division leadership: CHief Science Officer Nolan and the ship's primary xenobiology team. Zorkuk, a dutiful Benzite male from the Federation, and R'Nelle, a sharp-eyed Ferasan female representing the Klingon Defense Force. Both were busy nibbling on the Captain's bite-sized fruit tarts from a large tray in the center of the table.
"Our next mission," Anzyl announced, standing before the main briefing display, "is to transport the apex predator species from the moon of Lukar to the re-seeded, re-hydrated, and newly restored homeworld of Old Kentar."
Veirik squinted his eyes. "Wasn't Old Kentar even worse off than New Kentar? Isn't that why they had the Great Exodus in the first place?"
Anzyl nodded. "Yes, it was! But thanks to the Tzenkethi and their protomatter warhead, the Lukari molecularly reset Old Kentar to a clean slate quite a while ago. While we were off hunting the Fek'ihri, the Lukari were busy re-forming the husk of a world into an actually stable planet. Kumaarke tells me the flora has been successfully re-seeded. Now, the time has come for the fauna to repopulate."
He tapped a control on the console. "The Federation is supplying a fleet of Typhon-class carriers for the vast majority of the planet's biomass—everything from micro-organisms and insects all the way up to giant herbivores." He paused, looking around the room. "Our job is to transport the apex predators. Safely. And above all... securely."
He turned to Tey'un, Eroga, and Gaimmack. "Your job will be retrofitting our primary cargo bays and holodecks into temporary paddocks and containment fields for the transport."
"How many wild animals are we talking about here?" Eroga asked, leaning over her padd to review images of vibrant pink Lukari tigers and dark purple, wolf-like predators.
Anzyl gestured to Nolan and his xenobiologists. "I'll let the experts answer that. We are migrating a planet's future evolutionary tree here."
Zorkuk adjusted his breathing apparatus and cleared his throat. "When it comes to conservation biology and population genetics, transporting apex predators is incredibly tricky. Because they sit at the very top of the food chain, their natural carrying capacity in any ecosystem is low. You can't simply dump thousands of them onto Old Kentar at once and expect the food web to hold."
R'Nelle crossed her arms, her feline eyes scanning the group. "To ensure they don't suffer from a genetic dead-end, we have to balance two core principles: the Operational Sex Ratio and the Effective Population Size."
Anzyl sat back down, picking up a fruit tart. He braced himself; the serious technobabble was about to begin.
Zorkuk continued, "From a purely genetic standpoint, a 1:1 male-to-female ratio is the gold standard for maximizing genetic diversity. However, nature complicates things based on a predator's mating strategy—specifically, whether they are monogamous or polygynous."

This allows for explosive initial population growth, which is fantastic for a newly seeded world because the females dictate the birth rate."
"However!" R'Nelle interjected, tapping her claws on the table. "Even with a harem system, we cannot simply bring one male and fifty females. If we do, the entire next generation will be half-siblings, leading to catastrophic inbreeding depression." She stood up, stepped to the interactive display, and keyed in a formula.

She circled the final number with a flick of her claw. "Thirty-six."
She turned to face the Captain with a frown. "Even though we physically transported 100 animals, genetically the founder population behaves as if there are only 36 individuals. Genetic diversity will plummet, and the species will likely collapse within a few generations due to an severe bottleneck."
Anzyl blinked, nodding slowly as if he had followed every single variable. "Aaannd... that's a bad thing, I assume."
R'Nelle nodded solemnly.
"So... taking 100 of a harem species isn't going to cut it?" Gaimmack asked, wincing slightly. "We need... more?"
"Much more," Zorkuk said. "If we skew the ratio without maintaining enough distinct lineages, the species will suffer debilitating genetic defects within a century. I strongly advise we adhere to the classic 50/500 rule: a minimum Effective Population Size of 50 individuals to prevent immediate, catastrophic inbreeding, scaling up to 500 over time to reduce long-term genetic drift."
The sheer logistical weight of the assignment settled heavily over the room.
Anzyl spoke up, breaking the silence. "The Nexus can handle the initial 50 per species now, and we'll let the Lukari handle the rest down the road."
