Chapter 2 - Testing the Limits

The forest stretched endlessly, trees twisted and warped, their bark shimmering faintly as if alive. The golden sunlight filtered through gaps in the foliage, painting the ground in streaks of pale fire. Birds, or creatures that looked like birds, flitted between branches, their calls strange and melodic.

Alric took the lead, his lean frame moving cautiously over uneven ground. Despite the panic he had felt moments ago, he forced himself to think clearly. "Let's Stick together. No matter what happens, don't split up," he said. His voice carried authority, though his heart still hammered in his chest.

Kaitlin bounced beside him, her slim frame light and agile. "I feel like every tree is watching us," she murmured, though her tone carried a spark of excitement. She had a mischievous grin on her face, the nervous energy of the unknown turning into playful curiosity.

Maria walked slightly behind, hands glowing faintly as she concentrated. Her wide eyes darted from shadow to shadow. "We should practice…so we could hold our ground if anything attacks us," she said, her voice soft but firm. "We don't know what could happen."

Freda strode beside Alric, holding her hands loosely at her sides. Her Tactical insight—or whatever instinctive connection she had—made her aware of both danger and opportunity. She flexed her fingers subtly, eyes narrowing as if the forest itself were a target. Even at G-rank, she imagined if she could push Holy Light further than she had yet dared.

Axel walked silently, carrying their camping gear seeming prepared. "If we're going to survive, we need to understand our limitations," he said calmly, eyes scanning the horizon. "Our abilities are nothing if we can't control it. Let's test our abilities… systematically."

Ethan trailed behind, arms crossed. "Systematic? I just want to make sure none of these… weird animals try to eat us first," he muttered. Despite his annoyance, there was a flicker of excitement in his eyes. He tightened his fists, ready to test the Fire Slash he barely understood.

Alric nodded, taking a deep breath. "Alright. Let's start with something simple. Each of us should try basic use of our abilities—small and controlled."

He stepped forward and extended his hands. A shadow tendril snaked from his fingertips, flickering, jerking. It grazed a low-hanging branch and recoiled sharply, wobbling like it had a mind of its own. "Clumsy," he muttered. "I need to somehow increase my control."

Kaitlin flicked her wrist, and a small, shimmering illusion of a fox darted between the trees. It paused, turned its head, and disappeared. She laughed nervously. " I like it."

Maria held her hands outward, and a soft blue glow spread around her palms, forming a faint protective dome around herself and a small radius ahead. It wobbled slightly, almost unstable. "I think I can keep this for a few minutes," she whispered, heart hammering.

Freda focused, eyes narrowing. She lifted her palms, a thin streak of Holy Light forming between her fingers. She instinctively angled it at a fallen branch, and the light cut through the wood cleanly, sending splinters scattering. Her mouth quirked upward. "Hmm… not bad," she murmured. A spark of realization flickered in her mind: I can fight as well as protect.

Ethan stepped forward, palm glowing faintly. A streak of fire jumped from his hand and struck a mossy tree stump. The bark smoldered but remained intact. He frowned. "Need more precision," he muttered. "Maybe I need a sword or weapon to channel it better."

Axel closed his eyes, focusing. A small, winged creature appeared briefly above his hand, chirping softly before dissolving. "Creature Bond seems sensitive to my concentration," he said, voice low. "I'll need more practice and mana to summon anything useful in combat."

They paused, panting, eyes wide from their small successes. For a moment, the panic of the summoning faded, replaced by cautious excitement.

Alric ran a hand through his hair. "This confirms one thing—our powers are real, yes—but untrained and clumsy. That can get us killed. We need to practice. All of us."

Freda's eyes flicked to the shadows. "And we need to stay aware. There's more than just creatures here. Something is watching. I can feel it."

Kaitlin shivered slightly. "Like… a predator?" she asked, voice quiet.

"Maybe," Freda said. Her fingers itched to extend her Holy Light offensively, testing limits while staying safe. We need to fight as well as heal.

Alric nodded. "For now, let's walk slowly. Keep eyes open. Try using our abilities where it's safe. Small bursts, controlled so don't attract anything."

They moved deeper into the forest, testing their skills on logs, rocks, and small patches of terrain. Alric's shadows stretched, flickering and curling. Kaitlin's illusions became sharper, forming small animals and fluttering insects. Maria's Sanctum skills developed a sturdier protective dome. Freda sliced light through underbrush effortlessly, her confidence growing. Ethan's fire strikes became shorter, more precise bursts. Axel's summoned creature hovered longer, chirping softly, reacting to commands.

Hours—or what felt like hours—passed. The forest's shimmer never faded. Every movement carried tension, every shadow a question.

Finally, they paused near a small clearing. Alric knelt to examine the ground. "Footprints. Large. Definitely not human. Possibly a Wolf from its shape," he said quietly.

Kaitlin's eyes widened. "Great… So we have a wolf problem"

Freda's hands twitched, itching to test her offensive skills further. "We don't know yet. Let's not engage yet. We should observe and learn its pattern. Then respond."

Maria nodded, wrapping her glowing dome slightly tighter around them. "We need to stick together. One person alone could be overpowered."

Axel, silent as always, murmured, "These footprints indicate a pattern… cautious and stalking. The Wolf is aware of us, it's intelligent."

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Cautious or not, if it attacks, we need to be ready." He flexed his fingers.

Alric straightened, looking at his friends. "Exactly. That's why we test our abilities now, while it's safe. We need to know our limits before we're forced to fight."

Axel glanced at everyone and reminded them to make sure their mana dosen't go below half. Which was quickly acknowledged by the group.

The forest seemed to lean closer, as if listening. The pulse beneath the earth thrummed faintly. Their first step into a dangerous, unknown world was over—but the real tests were coming, and the forest, the system, and whatever creatures lurked in the shadows were all waiting.
