Chapter 9 - All Roads Lead To…

"Master, I want to have property. A mansion would be pretty nice. I crave a life of luxury!"

"I can't really say I crave that too… I'm only interested in this world as a challenge, not for comfort."

"But Master! We got pretty much nothing on us, we're basically homeless! Wouldn't it make sense to get a set place to sleep and live? And I want a bed again… Thus, I suggest we learn about the local currency and then make a fortune!"

Yamato thought about it for a moment, finding it to be an annoying objective, but a necessary one.

"I guess you are right. We can hardly just wander around the world like this forever. And I wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable with our living conditions either. Though we probably can't go back to the capital, seeing as we have become somewhat of fugitives now. On the other hand, I doubt anyone would recognize us and here we hardly left witness behind. Though I'd hate for things to escalate into a field of destruction again…"

"Why? It's not like I'd let anything happen to you~"

"Because if we just walk around and destroy city after city, we are never going to make any progress."

"You're right! Who's going to build our mansion if everyone is dead? And where?! I feel like a beach location would be nice."

"Why are you so hung up on a mansion…"

"It doesn't matter all that much as long as its just the two of us living together!"

Yamato ignored her wholesome comment and started walking into a seemingly random direction, away from the chaos caused by Yuki. She just followed him, thinking about what he said. She did not actually value human civilization, never having actually lived among humans before. It was pretty much irrelevant to her if the places they went to would still exist after they left.

As they walked out of the area hit by Yuki's rampage, they entered forest again. But this one was much smaller than the one the evlen capital was in, because soon after they reached a large open field with flowers in all kinds of colors, a truly beautiful sight to behold.

It was then when Yuki noticed the direction they were walking towards was in fact not random, but going north. Or at least she assumed that he was trying to use the setting sun to determine directions, though she was unsure if that would even work, seeing as this was not earth. While the sense of adventure was exciting to her, she would prefer to not spent the night in the wilderness, as she already took a great liking to sharing a bed together. The quality of the bed was secondary here. True love would eventually reach him, she was certain. Which was why she chose to try all sorts of thing seeing as they had plenty of time right now.

"Master, I completly forgot because of all the commotion earlier, but it is important to me that you hear this directly from me. I decided that the only way I will ever find happiness is through you, which is why I am determined to marry you!"

"…Excuse me?"

"Marriage! You, me, together forever~?"

She formed a heart and gave him a wink, in a silly and random act to attempt seducing him.

"I'm not looking to get married anytime soon… Or do anything long term relationship related for that matter. Let's just be friends?"

"Haha, no~"

"…View our relationship however you want, I guess."

"Ah, I love you so much!"

"I find it irritatingly troublesome understanding and relating to your intensity…"

"That's alright, I still love you!"

"You know I can't promise to ever love you back, right?"

"Good thing that I can promise you that you will~!"

"Good luck, I guess. But let's focus on important things, like where we want to go and how to get there."

"Should I just fly around for a bit?"

"I think we want to stay low for now. There might be a way to track us if we use magic, similarly to how you can track mana, right?"

"Although I think that would be unlikely, if you want to play it safe…"

"Why is he so willing to take risks in some areas but is so careful in others? Is it because he doesn't think he has much control of things that have a magic variable? But that's what I'm for, Master…

"It's going to get dark soon, so we should see that we get somewhere to spent the night relatively safe."

"This open fied continues for as far as the eye can see though, I don't think we will find anything new if we want to stop when it's dark."

"I guess we should stay at the edge to the forest then… But we aren't as far from the prison as I was planning on… Eh, I guess it will have to do. Maybe we get lucky and some trader happens to pass by and we can ask them for directions. This whole prison incident gave me a sense of how powerful people can be in this world... I doubt we will meet someone stronger than a hero for now. What do you think?"

"You needn't worry, Master, I will stay awake the entire night if you worry about saftey! I am confident in my ability to neutralize any threat we might stumble upon~"

"I'd really hate if our party were to increase in size… How anti-romantic would it be if it were no longer just the two of us…"

"That's great, Yuki… So you just keep watch."

"Yes!"

Yuki suddenly realized that they did not have a tent or similar.

"We don't have a tent, Master!"

"Oh really…"

"I promise!"

Her energetic voice could lead someone to believe she had a solution she was just waiting to present to him, but she had not.

"Can't you create something with your now filled up magic?"

"I can't, I'm sorry..."

"Let's just sleep on the ground then. You can light a fire though, right?"

"Okay..."

Yuki disliked the idea of him sleeping on the ground. On the other hand they were sleeping right next to each other, which she liked. But sleeping next to each other in an actual bed would obviously be even better. Seeing as it could not be helped at the moment, she instead swore to change that in the near future.

"…I'm sorry, Master…"

"What for?"

"Ah… nothing."

She pointed with her index finger at the ground and a fire appeared.

"It won't go out or light the grass on fire, if you worried about that."

"That's pretty useful."

"I know, right? My awesomeness knows no bounds~"

With her mood restored by a simple compliment, she returned to being a bundle of joy. Not much more happened that day. Yamato did not mind sleeping on the ground, and woke up the next day like he would have if he had slept in a bed. Yuki had put out the fire at sunrise as it would not go out naturally and they departed shortly after.

After a few hours they came accross a road. The road was not in good condition by modern standards but above average in this world, he assumed by comparing it to the ones they saw in the elven capital. After following the road for a bit, they found a sign which had two directions on it. Behind the sign was a crossroads, the road on the right being used much more frequently, based on the condition. Which lead Yamato to believe that one lead to a larger city or town. Based on that logic they followed the road to the right. They followed the road for multiple hours before they finally heard a carriage approaching from behind them. It appeared to be an elderly man who was transporting goods to sell. He stopped next to them.

"Hello there, you two. Where are you headed, all on your own like that?"

"Just to the nearest city."

Yamato said, smiling back at the old man.

"On foot? You have quite the journey ahead of you… You must be going to the Magic School of Lunis. You students really come from all around the world, huh… But on foot it will take you at least two days until you get there. That's no good, the entrance exam will be over by then… But I'm headed to Lunis anyway. Why don't you hop on, I've got some space in the back for the two of you."

"Magic school of Lunis… Sounds like a good enough excuse for an identity. We both look young enough to pass as students. Well, I actually am.Yuki could probably just do a magic trick and convince him if he gets suspicious of us. But he doesn't seem like the cautious type. Which is suspicious for a businessman. But I guess I'm just overthinking it…"

"That's extremely generous of you, good sir. But I'm afraid we don't have any money to pay you back for that kind of service."

"Oh, that's alright. I'd like the company."

"Well, in that case we would happily accept your offer and join you on your way to Lunis."

"Just make yourselfs comfortable back then. It will still take us about a half a day, so don't expect us to get there before noon."

Yuki and Yamato took a seat on the carriage and they went along the road surprisingly fast. It definitely would cut their travel time short by a lot. Even though it would be much faster if Yuki just flew with Yamato. This method would suffice and they would soon pass through the newest city gates. With no border patrol here, which made Yamato believe that maybe only capital cities had those. Or maybe they were no longer in the empire and only the empire had strict borders. It could also be just a generally more peaceful area, but what point was there in theorizing? Maybe staying for a little longer would make sense for them? After all, when the goal was to learn about the basics of the world, what better place then a school? So maybe actually adapting their made up persona as students was the right choice. The old man seemed to drop them off there anyways, so why not try to qualify, Yamato thought. However he could not use magic yet nor did he know if he ever would. But he would think of something. At least Yuki would be able to enroll as a student, if he could not cheat his way in at all. The old man stopped in front of the school building, which was pretty big.

"There you go. Just in time, if I remember correctly. I'm not that familiar with the school's application process, but I wish you two the best of luck. Oh, I completely forgot to ask about your names. I am Oswin Noire."

"Thank you so much for letting us come along, Oswin. You really saved us there. I am Yamato."

"And my name is Yuki."

"I see. Well, then farewell to you, Yamato and Yuki."

"Farewell to you too, Oswin."

And so their ways parted for now. Yamato however immediately turned around and went to go into the school.

"Master, where are you going? Weren't we just pretending to go there?"

"Not anymore, Yuki. We are going to school now."
