As Yuki watched Yamato think about what to do, she herself got an idea.
"Maybe we should just try to get some form of property first, Master?"
"Property? Why?"
"Well, we got pretty much nothing on us. Wouldn't it make sense to get a set place to sleep and live, before thinking about anything else? We also have yet to learn about the local currency."
Yamato thought about it for a moment, finding it to be an annoying objective, but a necassary one.
"I guess you are right. We can't walk around the world like this forever. And without any more supplies, we literally can't do anything for much longer. I wonder if we can go back to the capital... Maybe we are on a sort of black list already though... I don't wanna walk into another field of destruction."
"Why not? It's not like I'd let anything happen to you~"
"Because if we just walk around and destroy city after city, we are never going to make any progress."
Yamato started walking into a seemingly random direction, away from the chaos caused by Yuki. Yuki just followed him, thinking about what he said. She did not actually value human civilization, never having actually lived among humans before. It was therefore indifferent to her if the places they went to would still exist after they left. But she would not question him on it. Seeing as how little they have accomplished so far, he seemed to have a point.
As they walked out of the area that was hit by Yuki's rampage, they entered forest again. But the forest did not seem to be that large anymore, because soon they had reached a large open field with flowers in all kinds of colors.
It was then when Yuki noticed the direction they were walking towards was infact not random, but towards the sunset. Why that was important, she didn't understand. While the sense of adventure was exciting to her, she'd prefer to not spent the night in the wilderness for too long.
That's when she remembered something.
"Master, I completly forgot because of all the commotion from before! I am determined to marry you!"
"…Excuse me?"
"Marriage! You, me, together forever~?"
She formed a heart and gave him a wink, in a silly and quite random act of failed seduction.
"I'm not looking to get married anytime soon… Or do anything long term relationship related for that matter. Let's just be friends?"
"Haha, no~"
"…View our relationship however you want, I guess."
"Ah, I love you!"
"I have trouble understanding your intensity and relating to it…"
"That's alright, I still love you!"
"You know I can't promise to ever love you back, right?"
"Good thing that I can promise you that you will~!"
"Well, your confidence is something, I guess. But let's focus on where we want to go and how we get there."
"I think it would help if we would just fly around and scout a bit."
"We could... But it'd be bothersome to explain how you have wings if we would be seen... We don't know what species are considered normal here and who likes who. It could be that we get into conflict through carelessness such as that. I would also like to avoid having to get rid of anyone who we cross paths with. It'd be more helpful to get lasting sources of information."
"Got it. No flying and no killing people without a very good reason."
"Good. The sun is gonna set soon. There is no good cover in this field... But maybe that's a good thing."
"...It is?"
Yuki asked, feeling a sense of satisfaction from his praise but also failing to understand how less cover would be good.
"I want to attract travellers. If they see a camp fire, they might just come by. Of course we have to be careful who we attract. But that shouldn't be a problem. This whole prison incident gave me a sense of how powerful people scale in this world... I doubt we will meet someone stronger than a hero in a while for now. So you should get us carried."
"That's okay, Master. I wasn't planning to sleep anyways!"
"Again, meeting new people… Eugh, at least they will be replaceable. He did say it would be fine in emergencies~"
"Not exactly my message here but okay… So you keep watch."
"Yes!"
"Great."
"Thank you!"
A weird back and forth, which seemed to lead nowhere. It was then when Yuki noticed that they did not have a tent or similar.
"We don't have a tent, Master!"
"…oh really, how observant."
"Thank you!"
She said excitedly, not ignoring the sarcasm but simply not understanding it as a consequence of delusional fantasies she had running in the back of her head.
"That wasn't-… Whatever. Can't you create something with your now filled up magic?"
"I could…! But I'd have to use one fifth of all the mana I have left."
Yamato thought about it for a moment, coming to the conclusion that it would be risky to have only four fifths left. Especially after facing such a strong enemy, it was important to be prepared for even stronger ones.
"That's expensive… let's just sleep on the ground and light a fire."
"Okay…."
Yuki disliked the idea of him sleeping on the ground. She felt like it was her duty to have him sleep somewhere luxurious and comfortable. But it could not be helped at the moment. However she swore to herself to change that in the near future.
"…I'm sorry, Master…"
"What for?"
"Ah… nothing."
She pointed with her index finger at the ground and a fire appeared.
"It won't go out or light the grass on fire, if you worried about that."
"That's pretty useful."
"I know, right? My awesomeness knows no bounds~"
Not much more happened that day. Yamato did not mind sleeping on the ground, and woke up the next day like he would have if he slept in a bed. Yuki had put out the fire at sunrise as it would not go out naturally. They departed shortly after.
It was only after a few hours, that they came accross a road, which naturally meant it would lead them somewhere, if they followed it. And so they did. The road was not in good condition by modern standards but above average in this world, he assumed by comparing it to the ones they saw in the elven capital. After following the road for a bit, they found a sign which had two directions on it. Behind the sign was a crossroads, the right one being used much more frequently, according to the condition of the road. Which lead Yamato to believe that that one was primarily used by traders and merchants which in turn meant it would lead to a bigger city. Based on that logic they followed the road to the right. They followed the road for multiple hours before they finally heard a carriage approaching from behind them. It appeared to be an elderly man who was transporting goods to sell. He stopped next to Yamato and Yuki and spoke kindly.
"Hello there, you two. Where are you headed, all on your own like that?"
"Just to the nearest city big city."
Yamato said, smiling back at the old man.
"On foot? You have quite the journey ahead of you… You must be going to the magic school of Lunis .It's at least two days on without a carriage or horse. But you're in luck. I'm headed to Lunis as well. Why don't you hop on, I've got some space in the back for the two of you."
"Magic school of Lunis… Sounds like a good enough excuse for an identity. We both look young enough to pass as students. Well, I actually am.Yuki could probably just do a magic trick and convince him if he gets suspicious of us. I suppose this is perfect… although he is suspiciously kind for a businessman. Maybe he's seen enough of life to just live it in a steady way. Though he might still have a hidden agenda behind his 'kind' offer. Either way there's no way we can decline his offer. It is also the perfect opportunity to form connections to the people of this world and learn about their society."
"That's extremely kind of you, good sir. But I'm afraid we don't have any money to pay you back for that kind of service."
"Oh, that's alright. I'd like the company."
"Well, in that case we'd happily accept your offer and join you on your way to Lunis."
"Just make yourselfs comfortable back there."
Yuki and Yamato took a seat on the carriage and they went along the road, surprisingly fast actually. It definitely would cut their travel time short by a lot. Even though it would be much faster if Yuki just flew with Yamato. This method would suffice and they would soon pass through the gates. With no border patrol here, which made Yamato believe that maybe only capital cities had those. Or maybe they were no longer in the empire and only the empire had strict borders like that. Or maybe it is just a generally more peaceful area they are in. Maybe staying for a little longer would make sense for them? After all, when the goal was to learn about the basics of the world, what better place then a peaceful environment to study in? So maybe actually going to school would prove useful in that sense. The old man seemed to drop them off there anyways, so why not try to qualify, Yamato thought. However he could not use magic yet nor did he know if he ever would. But he would think of something. The old man stopped in front of the school building, which was pretty big.
"There you go. You guys almost came late for the school application time ends. You were really lucky I went by and took you along. Oh, I completely forgot to ask about your names. I am Oswin Noire."
"Thank you so much for letting us come along, Oswin. You really saved us there. I am Yamato."
"And my name is Yuki!"
"I see. Well, then farewell to you, Yamato and Yuki."
"Farewell to you too, Oswin."
And so their ways parted for now. Yamato however immediately turned around and went to go into the school.
"Master, why are you going in? Weren't we just pretending to go there?"
"Not anymore, Yuki. We are going to school now."
