Chapter 97 - The Carytid Vaults

The Ember Vow dropped from the Warp above the broken world of Carytid Prime.

Once, this was the Imperium's largest secure archive outside Terra — now it was a corpse-world, its Vaults under the claws of traitor hands.

Shawn stood on the strategium dais, eyes fixed on the tactical display.

"We take the Vault whole. We burn out the corruption, not the walls. Eristan — I want the cores intact."

The Magos' vox-grille crackled.

"Understood. This Vault holds data caches from the Great Crusade era… possibly STC fragments. Your order is… optimal."

Valen stepped forward, psyker aura faintly shimmering.

"If the warp has sunk into the data, I can burn it clean. But I'll need time… and you'll need to hold the enemy off me."

Shawn smiled faintly. "That's the plan."

Drop Assault — Outer Vault Gate

The gates rose higher than a Titan's head, half-buried in rubble, defended by traitor Skitarii ranks bristling with arc rifles, heavy servitors, and the hulking forms of warp-touched constructs.

Above them, squads of traitor Astartes — their armour the sickly shade of old oaths betrayed — held the high firing lines.

Shawn hit the ground first, his Spirit Projection flaring into shape — a wave of liquid black Haki wrapping his body in a second skin. Every step left ripples in the dirt.

[Armament Hardening] — his entire form darkened, absorbing and deflecting incoming fire.

[Observation Haki] — his mind tracked every shot, every twitch, every faint hostile intent.

"Forward!"

The Salamanders charged in unison — Vulkar's hammer cracked the earth, Basur tore through a Skitarii line, and Tahak's blades moved like lightning, guided by Observation.

The newly joined Raven Guard Serkan moved like a phantom, cutting off the enemy's escape routes.

Vorn of the Black Templars smashed into the gate line, chanting litanies, his Haki exploding with each word.

Coordinated Haki Assault

The Custodes and Grey Knights advanced behind the first wave — their synergy honed from months of Shawn's drills.

Pairs moved together: a Custodes using Armament to shield, a Grey Knight focusing his psychic will through Haki to pierce enemy cover.

[Application: Armament Barrier] — Custodes in gold raised their weapons, coating them in dense Haki, forming temporary physical walls to shield allies.

[Application: Observation Pulse] — Grey Knights scanned ahead, reading enemy movement before it happened, relaying it instantly.

Every time an enemy heavy weapon came to bear, it was already destroyed before the trigger was pulled.

Shawn's Push

Shawn's Spirit Projection extended into a long-bladed halberd — the liquid Haki forming and hardening instantly.

He swung low, cutting through a servitor's legs, then pivoted, Haki flooding down the shaft to the blade tip.

[Advanced Projection Strike] — A wave of Haki left the weapon, slicing through a line of corrupted Skitarii without touching their armour — killing only the warped presence inside.

But it cost him. He felt the familiar pull in his chest — Spirit Projection this dense always ate into his stamina. He could burn his will bright, but it would shorten the fight if he didn't pace himself.

Valen's Work

While the fighting roared outside, Valen knelt at the Vault's primary data seal.

His psyker aura flared blue, wrapped in the hard black sheen of Armament Haki. The combination created a pressure wave — the air vibrated, the Warp itself seemed to retreat.

Warp-tainted glyphs on the gate began to burn away.

[Dual Application: Psyker Resonance + Haki Hardening] — Valen forced the corruption out while ensuring no new taint could slip through.

Two enemy psykers appeared on the high balcony — both traitor Astartes, their eyes bleeding with warp light.

They tried to crush Valen's mind.

They failed.

Valen's Conqueror's Haki detonated — invisible force crashing into them, shattering their will. They tumbled from the balcony before they could scream.

Inner Gate Breach

The Custodes' shield line advanced to the wall, Haki coating their boots to grip the rubble.

Grey Knights behind them unleashed Haki-enhanced force weapons, psychic energy made sharper and faster.

With a final coordinated strike — Vulkar's hammer, Basur's charge, Tahak's blades — the gate's locking frame collapsed.

Inside, the Vault's central chamber loomed: shelves upon shelves of stasis-locked relics, cogitators as large as hab-blocks, all lit by flickering lumen strips.

The enemy here was different — warp-possessed servitors fused with vault-machinery, forming twisted guardians.

The Close-Quarters Fight

In tight aisles, Observation Haki became king.

Shawn led the push, his Spirit Projection shifting into armoured gauntlets, letting him crush corrupted machine parts without risking his weapon catching in the shelves.

Every strike was precise — he didn't smash wildly, he removed exactly what would disable the guardian.

Custodes and Grey Knights mirrored the movement — blocking for one another, cutting deep without damaging the vault contents.

The fighting was slow, grinding, but relentless.

Aftermath

Hours later, silence fell.

The Vault was theirs.

Valen stood from the core terminal, his armour steaming from psychic exertion.

"Data purged, corruption burned out. Eristan… it's all yours."

Eristan's mechadendrites moved rapidly, linking to the core.

"Confirmed. STC fragments… advanced anti-warp ordnance schematics… And… coordinates to loyalist forces, isolated since the Heresy."

Shawn looked over the glowing map on the display.

"Then that's our next move."

Foreshadow

Far beyond the Materium, in the roiling madness of the Warp, the Chaos Gods watched.

They didn't speak to one another. They didn't need to.

They knew exactly what Shawn had taken from the Vault — and what he meant to build with it.

The game had changed.
