Chapter 39 — The Night Everything Changed
The palace was quiet that night.
Mia and Nathan had spent the evening together in the sitting room, talking long after the movie had ended.
Mia was sitting close to him, her head resting against his shoulder.
"I still can't believe this is our life," she whispered.
Nathan looked down at her.
"Neither can I."
She smiled.
"Do you remember when we were children and you told me we'd never become friends again after our biggest argument?"
Nathan laughed.
"You threw my book into the lake."
"You deserved it."
"You were impossible."
Mia laughed.
"And yet you stayed."
"I always stayed."
The laughter slowly faded.
They looked at each other.
There was something different in the silence.
Something deeper.
Nathan gently touched her cheek.
Mia leaned into his hand.
"I love you," he whispered.
"I love you too."
They kissed.
This time, there was no hesitation.
The kiss lingered, filled with everything they had spent so long refusing to acknowledge.
Mia wrapped her arms around him.
Nathan held her close.
They kissed again, and the rest of the world seemed to disappear.
Neither of them spoke about what came next.
They simply stayed together, allowing the moment to carry them somewhere neither had expected to go.
That night, they crossed another boundary in their relationship and became even closer than they had ever been.
The details of the night remained private, belonging only to them.
---
Hours later, Mia lay quietly beside Nathan.
She stared at the ceiling, still trying to understand how completely her life had changed.
Nathan turned toward her.
"You okay?"
Mia smiled.
"I'm more than okay."
She rested her head against his shoulder.
"I never would have imagined this."
"What?"
"That I would end up here."
She laughed softly.
"Married to my childhood best friend… and actually loving him."
Nathan smiled.
"I wouldn't have imagined it either."
Mia looked at him.
"I spent so much time believing love would only hurt me."
Nathan gently took her hand.
"And now?"
She squeezed his fingers.
"Now I think I finally understand what it feels like when love is safe."
Nathan kissed her forehead.
"I'll always try to make it that way."
Mia smiled.
She moved closer and rested against him.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
For a while, they simply held each other.
No titles.
No royal responsibilities.
No expectations.
Just Mia and Nathan.
The two best friends who had somehow found their way to each other.
And as Mia closed her eyes, one thought remained in her mind:
She never would have believed that the person she would fall in love with would be the same boy who had once driven her completely crazy.
Yet somehow…
he had become her home.
