It happened on a cold, moonlit night when Nurarihyon, the Master of Displacement, was returning from a journey through the territories of rival yōkai.
As he passed through an ancient forest, he noticed something strange.
The yōkai of the forest had gone silent.
No wolves howled. No insects sang. Even the lesser spirits had withdrawn from a small clearing beneath an enormous, ancient tree.
Nurarihyon stopped.
"Now, that's unusual."
He sensed no ordinary human presence. Instead, a strange aura lingered in the air—a mixture of primordial dragon energy, ancient fear, and something that felt older than the forest itself.
Then he heard it.
A toddler's faint cry.
The Child Beneath the Tree
At the roots of the tree lay a toddler wrapped in a dark, unfamiliar cloak. The child appeared to be around two years old, with unusual eyes that reflected the moonlight like the scales of a dragon.
The Child Beneath the Tree
At the roots of the tree lay a toddler wrapped in a dark, unfamiliar cloak. The child appeared to be around two years old, with unusual eyes that reflected the moonlight like the scales of a dragon.
There were no footprints leading into the clearing.
No carriage. No human guardians. No trace of the child's parents.
Nurarihyon crouched beside the child.
"Well, well. Who abandoned you in a place like this?"
The toddler stopped crying and looked directly at him.
For one brief moment, Nurarihyon saw the shadow of an enormous Eastern dragon coiling behind the child's tiny body.
Then it vanished.
Nurarihyon's smile faded.
He had encountered powerful yōkai, ancient curses, and creatures that inspired terror in entire provinces. Yet this child was doing something extraordinary without even understanding it.
The surrounding spirits were instinctively treating the toddler as something they should never offend.
The child reached for Nurarihyon's sleeve and grasped it.
A tiny hand. An impossible presence.
Nurarihyon chuckled.
"Looks like you've chosen me, little one."
As he walked, he noticed that his usual ability to slip unnoticed through the world behaved strangely around the toddler. It was as if the child unconsciously bent the attention of nearby beings away from them.
Nurarihyon laughed softly.
"Displacement, eh? Perhaps you'll teach an old yōkai a new trick."
He named the child his adopted son and brought him to the Nura household.
But he made one rule clear to his clan:
"Until we know who this child truly is, nobody is to treat him as a weapon, a prize, or a threat. He's a child under my protection."
And far away, beyond the reach of ordinary spirits, something ancient stirred in its sleep.
The dragon had been found.
The world simply did not yet know what Nurarihyon had brought home.
