Chapter 311 - March 2018

@Annasmith

Kimmel is bombing at the Oscars….

[Video clip shows Jimmy Kimmel on stage, camera panning across the audience]

JIMMY KIMMEL: "And over there, we have Daniel Adler—"

[Camera cuts to Daniel sitting next to Margot]

JIMMY: "Now, I read something interesting about Daniel recently. He said in an interview that he would never buy a private jet. He said, and I quote, 'It's wasteful and unnecessary.'"

[Audience laughs]

JIMMY: "Daniel, I appreciate the sentiment, I really do. But buddy... you're a billionaire."

JIMMY: "You are literally the richest person in this room right now. And that includes Steven Spielberg."

[Camera briefly cuts to Spielberg]

JIMMY: "You're under 30. You've never had a bad movie. You're engaged to Margot Robbie—"

[Camera cuts to Margot, who smiles]

JIMMY: "—and you're telling me you won't buy a private jet? Daniel, live a little!"

JIMMY: "But seriously, thank you for flying commercial. The planet thanks you. The environment appreciates it... or something. The middle-seat guy next to you on Delta... not so much."

What was that supposed to be about? At least Adler stands by his words and doesn't use a private jet that literally harms the planet. Respect.

@EcoWarrior24 (5.7k likes) replying

THANK YOU. Private jets are one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions. Adler's doing the right thing.

@SwiftieForever (8.9k likes)

This feels like a callout to Taylor and other celebs who use private jets constantly. Why is she always dragged into this?

@AdlerFan88 (6.1k likes) replying

No one mentioned Swift here. Why do you guys make everything about her?

@SwiftieForever (3.4k likes) replying

Because she gets dragged for this all the time while men like Adler get praised.

@Realitck101 (4.8k likes) replying

Adler literally DOESN'T use a private jet. That's the point.

@Filmter (9.2k likes)

What was the joke here, Jimmy? "You're rich, so do whatever you want"? That's the punchline?

@Comeitic (3.6k likes) replying

Yeah, the joke fell flat. It was more of a weird flex than anything.

@AdlerWatcher (7.8k likes)

Margot's face when Jimmy said "engaged to Margot Robbie" looked annoyed, especially since they haven't even announced or officially confirmed it.

@Environters (6.5k likes)

The fact that Adler is a billionaire and STILL flies commercial is genuinely nice. Most people at his level wouldn't even consider it.

@Noimmy (3.9k likes)

This wasn't funny. It was just so awkward.

@MovieB24 (8.6k likes)

Jimmy really said "you're rich, do whatever you want" as if that's not the exact mentality destroying the planet.

BREAKING: Early screenings of CONSTANTINE have been GREAT. Netflix has already greenlit Season 2 AND Season 3.

Very good news for us DC fans.

As expected from DC. Just banger after banger. They never settle for mediocrity.

@Lorensmith (2.1k likes)

If they really get Constantine right, this could be one of the best comic adaptations ever. Please don't screw it up.

@HellblazerForever (1.9k likes)

SEASON 2 AND 3 ALREADY?! This is huge.

@Taronjones (1.3k likes)

Meanwhile, Marvel's Netflix shows got cancelled. DC is really winning on all fronts.

@Trishmans (876 likes) replying

To be fair, Daredevil Seasons 1 and 2 were great. Obviously, Adler's connections at Netflix got it cancelled so Netflix could become the home for DC TV shows.

@Cobbleindusres (2.3k likes)

Looking forward to The Penguin show and the JSA show after this. DC TV is about to be ELITE.

@Skean22 (987 likes)

I'll believe it when I see it. Early screenings always hype things up.

Trust me on this one. It's legitimately great.

TikTok - @Athenainwaiting

Video: User sitting with a copy of The Lost Hero, looking excited.

@Athenainwaiting:

"Okay, okay, okay. So I got a call two days ago. They said they were giving me and others early copies of The Lost Hero."

[She holds up the book to the camera]

"I read it. Cover to cover. In one sitting.

And I have to say: FUCK the leaks. That guy, whoever he or she is, SUCKS. They completely misrepresented this book.

Are there some truths to what they said? Yes. Percy isn't the main character in this one. Jason, Piper, and Leo are the leads.

But the book is so DAMN GOOD.

Like, genuinely one of the best in the series as a whole. The characters are incredible. The plot is amazing. The worldbuilding? Chef's kiss.

And it's going to be very emotional for all of us too. Like, I cried. Multiple times.

And now I'm basically counting down the days for the next book because what Daniel has set up in this is VERY good. I just hope he doesn't take another five years for the next one because I genuinely cannot take that."

[She laughs]

"I'll have a proper review in my next video. No spoilers, don't worry. But trust me. Give this book a chance if you were put off by the leaks."

[Video ends]

I KNEW the leaks were fucked. That guy had an agenda, and so many people in the fandom fell for it.

@book_daily (3.2k likes)

The way everyone turned on Adler so fast based on ONE 4chan post was insane.

@teamdan4ever (6.7k likes)

THANK YOU. I've been saying this the whole time: wait for the actual book before trashing it.

@stillvinced (2.1k likes)

If Jason, Piper, and Leo are the leads, I'm not reading it. I don't care how "good" it is. I want Percy.

@Athenainwaiting (4.5k likes)

Your loss 🤷‍

@Manwithaplan (3.8k likes)

The shift in the fandom is INSANE. Adler really paid you guys off, and now everyone's basically all lovey-dovey with him again. Wake up.

@lrtnc_wins (2.6k likes)

Or maybe the book is actually good and the leaks were intentionally misleading? Ever think of that?

@Manwithaplan (987 likes)

Damage control. This is all damage control.

@mythology_nerd88 (5.4k likes)

"Very emotional for all of us" WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! ATHENA, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WHO DIED?!

@Athenainwaiting (3.1k likes)

You'll see March 20th 😏

@halfbloodupdates (4.9k likes)

I owe Daniel Adler an apology then. I was ready to boycott. Now I'm pre-ordering.

@percabeth_forever (3.3k likes)

"I cried multiple times" RACHEL, WHAT HAPPENS TO PERCY AND ANNABETH?!

@booktrovert (2.7k likes)

Interesting how all the influencers who got early copies suddenly love it. Almost like... damage control?

@realieck101 (1.9k likes)

Or maybe they actually read the book instead of judging it based on out-of-context leaks?

@adlatcher (6.2k likes)

The fandom went from "BOYCOTT ADLER" to "omg I can't wait" in 48 hours.

@hatecchelate (987 likes)

"He better not take 5 years for the next one" MOOD. I can't go through this again.

@teamadler224 (7.3k likes)

I never doubted him. Not once. Daniel Adler doesn't miss.

@fandchaos (4.8k likes)

The way this video and others just flipped the entire narrative. We're so easily influenced lmao.

"Paul, how the fuck did I become the object of hate for the Swifties?" I asked as I sat near the cameras and monitors inside the Stardust Studios lot, where filming for The Usual Suspects was going to take place.

Today, we were doing rehearsals to get the chemistry right between the cast.

Paul shrugged. "The Oscars."

"Ah, yes. Kimmel," I said, already knowing the answer.

I remembered this whole Taylor Swift private jet meme happening much later in the future, around 2021 or so. But then again, I'd noticed how last year there was this big environmental movement on the internet where a lot of climate activists were calling out celebrities and other rich people for their carbon footprints. So the whole Taylor Swift private jet thing happened a bit earlier this time around. And now I'd gotten sucked into it when I made a comment during the Justice League press tour about not wanting a private jet because it was wasteful.

In truth, I did use one occasionally. I always leased Henry Morgan's jet when I really needed it. But the public didn't know that. And if the Swifties ever dug that up? All those fans defending me were going to have a rough time. Swifties could be very scathing when they wanted to be.

The Oscars, other than that mess, had been good. Midas won another one with Lady Bird Laurie Metcalf for Best Supporting Actress. Greta Gerwig had been nominated for Best Director but didn't win. Still, the film's five nominations and one win were a huge deal.

Del Toro was supposed to win big this year. I remembered that happening. But he was working on Frankenstein now and hadn't made The Shape of Water. And from what I'd heard from him during a recent call, he was going to pitch The Shape of Water as a movie in the Dark Universe.

That was going to be fun to see..

I looked over the script for the movie again.

There had been some changes made in the last few months, but overall there was no big departure from the tone of the original film. The performances from the actors would make the biggest difference. Paul Dano, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hardy, LaKeith Stanfield, and Michael Peña all had their own interpretations of the characters. It would be different from the original because of that. I just had to make sure it all worked together.

Some changes I'd made to Michael Keaton's character, since RDJ was playing Dean Keaton now, would also make him eligible for the Oscars. Paul would definitely be nominated. Considering what I'd seen so far from him in rehearsals, he'd outdone Kevin Spacey's performance.

The only big thing I had to worry about was making sure RDJ didn't dominate the cast and the story, even with the changes. If I got that balance right, then I'd make sure the movie would become a classic like it was in my old world.

I walked over to where Paul, Tom, LaKeith, and Michael were talking.

"Robert will be here soon," I said. "Then we can start."

Tom looked up. "So you want us to improvise this? The lineup scene doesn't really have clear direction in the script."

"Yes," I said. "I want to see what you guys bring to it naturally. I do have a version of it with what I want, but let's see what we can do here first."

One of the assistants walked over. "Mr. Adler, Mr. Downey's here."

"Good," I said. "We can start now."

Robert arrived a moment later, walking onto the set with his usual energy. He greeted everyone, shaking hands and making small talk.

Then he turned to me.

"Daniel," he said, grinning. "I have to apologize."

"What?" I asked, confused.

"I was late," Robert said, deadpan. "So I had to take a private jet here, and I know your feelings about it...."

Everyone burst out laughing.

"...I just had to do it, you know...."

"Fuck you," I said, shaking my head.

"You have to forgive me," Robert continued, mock-serious. "It will never happen again."

"Fucking Kimmel...," I muttered.

More laughter.

"Alright, alright," I said, waving them off. "Let's just do this."

Okay, I'm liking these new characters way more than I expected. Thalia is going to FREAK OUT when she finds out where her brother has been this whole time. I mean, Jason was just supposed to be a minor mention in The Last Olympian like, "oh yeah, Thalia had a brother who died" and now he's been alive this whole time at another camp?!

I love his character too. The way he's struggling with being the "perfect soldier" versus actually being himself? Also, I love everything with Piper. They are so cute together.

u/tearever (612 upvotes)

I ADORE Leo. He's hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. The stuff about his mom? I cried.

u/percabeth_4ever (398 upvotes)

Honestly, I don't like reading Annabeth in this state. She seems so helpless. It hurts to see her like this.

u/Aniesise2 (187 upvotes) replying

I think that's the point, though. She's always been the strategist, the one with the plan. Now she is completely lost....

u/mytholo_88 (521 upvotes)

So how does this work? The gods have Roman AND Greek sides? Like, did Zeus sleep with Thalia and Jason's mom in different forms? I don't understand.

u/cabiader (312 upvotes) replying

I think it's like... the gods have split personalities? Their Greek side is one aspect, their Roman side is another. Same god, different... vibe?

u/mytholo_88 (145 upvotes) replying

That's wild. So they're basically dealing with divine identity crises?

u/aphrodont (456 upvotes)

Loving Piper. She really is the opposite of Drew Tanaka.

u/romaninvcita (678 upvotes)

So there's another camp that's based on Rome, I guess. And they and the Greeks don't like each other. That's what I'm getting so far?

u/seaweedman (892 upvotes)

JUST FINISHED THE BOOK. THE FINAL CHAPTER WITH PERCY GOT ME SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT ONE. PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T TAKE FIVE MORE YEARS.

u/danieldanger (543 upvotes) replying

He said he's already working on the next one. Hopefully it comes faster.

u/prophecher (1.2k upvotes)

So I have a theory. Percy is the son of Poseidon, who is Neptune in the Roman pantheon. And Romans did NOT like Neptune. Not at all. And now that wolf lady Lupa is leading Percy to the Roman camp?

OH FUCK. Percy is NOT going to have a good time.

u/wisannabeth (876 upvotes) replying

Annabeth too, if she makes her way there. Minerva, Athena's Roman counterpart, is like a MINOR goddess in Roman mythology. She's not one of the big players like she is in Greek mythology. Annabeth's going to be SO disrespected.

u/prophecher (654 upvotes) replying

Oh my god, you're right.

u/bluefoodmacy (734 upvotes)

You know what? This was worth the five year wait.

u/camphaddaily (581 upvotes)

This and the new Season 4 of Percy Jackson? Best year for us.

"Preorders are down fifteen percent from last time," Lucy said as we stood in LA's largest bookstore for a book signing event.

"Yes, preorders, Luce. Don't worry about it," I said.

I gestured to the massive crowd waiting outside. "I mean, look how many people are here. And the reviews have been great as well. This is another bestseller."

Lucy crossed her arms. "As long as you keep your promise of releasing the next one next year."

"Don't worry about it," I said, walking toward the event space.

The fans waiting for me applauded and cheered as I walked over and sat down at the signing table. The first person in the queue, a teenage girl clutching her copy, walked over, beaming.

"Hello," I said, taking the copy of The Lost Hero from her and opening it to the title page.

"Oh my god, hi," she said, her voice shaking. "I loved the book so much."

I smiled. "I'm glad you liked it. What's your name?"

"Emily."

I signed the book.

She read it, her eyes lighting up. "Thank you so much!"

"No, thank you," I said, handing the book back.

She walked away.

The next person stepped up.

And then the next.

And the next.

It was going to be a long day.
