I can't say I'm happy about this, but it's not the worst thing to happen.
We're inside, safe and sound, and Tomas is sulking in the kitchen. The house is still, and the others have slept through all the fuss, but Roland and I are still up. We're not in the mood for rest, even if we should be.
Chances are, as long as we're in here, in front of witnesses, they won't try to make a move. They're very concerned with being caught. That means the best thing to do is sleep through the night and then move fast in the morning to lose our tail before they can try to get to us.
It's unlikely they'd go far into the no-man's land for us, so if we outrace them, we can make it some other time's problem.
But there's still the chance that they'll notice we've abducted Tomas, and then their behavior could be all kinds of erratic.
It's why we can't risk sending him back out to pretend he hasn't been caught.
