I blink awake slowly, my mind groggy and fuzzy, and my body stiff and a bit sore.
The dream is a vague memory, already fading, and yet there's a lingering warmth in my chest.
Who was it?
The voice, the softness, the longing.
I can't remember.
But I can feel it.
It was someone.
Someone important.
I hum and roll over, stretching out.
I'm still in the merchant cart with everyone else, but I've decided to get some better sleep o the floor of it so that I can be the next one to drive the cart.
It's not like this is a comfortable sleeping space by any means. But it's not as if this is the first uncomfortable traveling experience I've ever had, so it hardly matters. And, perhaps more importantly, May is still small enough that it's not cramped for her at all.
I glance over and find her curled up against Lucas, her stuffed rabbit pressed to her face, fast asleep.
Lucas himself is half awake, staring out the window.
"What are you looking at?"
He jumps, and turns toward me.
