Though the pirates under the Bloody Captain were saved, each of them was utterly exhausted and mostly injured, with a few unfortunates who had been taken by the ratmen now insane. Among them, one fellow was peeling his own skin.
This is clearly a case of severe psychological trauma, commonly known as madness.
But the most hellish joke about this situation is:
This guy is a vampire pirate with super healing power, so each time he finishes peeling his skin, it grows back, and the peeled-off skin burns away rapidly in the sunlight...
It's like a pitiful and endless torture in every sense.
