Chapter 619 - Chapter 619: Shutting the Dark Portal

"High Arcane Sight!"

With this spell, Alaric could more clearly and easily perceive the glow of magical energies. Through it, he could effortlessly see how magic was working on the Dark Portal.

In addition, he wore the Ravenclaw Diadem. With its overclocking effect, his perception had become razor-sharp, allowing him to detect even the most subtle shifts in energy.

After making all the necessary preparations, Alaric walked toward the Dark Portal.

The other mages stood behind him, watching as he slowly extended his hand.

His hand touched the stone exterior of the Dark Portal.

Through this, he could feel its immense power, it connected this world to Draenor, and in between, a rift of chaotic energy.

Vast magical force twisted the space between the two worlds, merging them through sheer will.

He could sense that these rifts could easily devour any spell they tried to cast.

To this world, the energy was simply too immense to be influenced by magic below a certain threshold.

But the power required to affect the portal was so vast that even if all of them combined their strength, they still wouldn't reach it.

So, the only viable plan was to target the physical gate structure itself.

After all, no matter how powerful the portal it supported was, the threshold of the gate was still made of stone.

And stone, in the end, is just stone, something that can be shattered.

Since the magical structure of the portal relied on that frame, removing it would be like destroying the wiring in an electrical circuit: instant failure.

Having identified a solution, Alaric focused his mind and summoned arcane energy, letting it fill his body completely.

Though the land's natural energy had been mostly drained by the portal itself, the Dark Portal was a massive source of power.

And it had no protective enchantments to stop a mage like him from converting that energy for his own use.

Alaric began doing just that. The other mages followed suit, drawing as much of the Dark Portal's energy as they could and channeling it toward Alaric.

As dense arcane energy gathered, Alaric felt as if he had cast an amplified version of the "Awaken" spell.

Unmatched power surged through his body, his eyes even began glowing with a vivid purple light.

His hair stood on end, and the overflowing energy crackled between his fingers and across his face.

The air around him distorted, and howling wind whipped past him, even generating flickering bolts of lightning.

To most other mages, this kind of energy would be unbearable.

But Alaric was different, he held the power of dragons, and a dragon's heart that could endlessly generate magical force. This kind of surge was entirely under his control.

This was precisely why he had to carry out the most critical part of the mission, among all those present, only he and Onyxia could withstand this energy.

In fact, not all of the energy was being poured into Alaric himself. As he drew power, he also opened a channel to direct some of it into his staff, Spellweaver.

Crafted with a core of Norgannon's beard and encased in a sapling branch of the World Tree, his wand had been modified and refined many times by Alaric.

It was capable of absorbing enormous amounts of energy.

Alaric secretly diverted a stream of this energy for his own use. The energy from the portal would be perfect for crafting another portal.

Perhaps the other mages simply couldn't imagine that Alaric would do something so brazen in broad daylight, because none of them noticed his sleight of hand.

They just continued channeling and redirecting the energy, drenched in sweat from their efforts.

Finally, once both he and his staff were fully saturated with energy, Alaric let the others off the hook.

He raised his hand in a signal to stop. The other mages sighed in relief and ceased their work.

The rest of the task was his alone now.

Facing the Dark Portal, Alaric closed his eyes, then opened his arms and spread his palms.

He gathered all the energy he had just absorbed and began chanting an incantation.

As the spell took shape, a pitch-black sphere appeared in his palm, a dark orb resembling a black hole, seemingly drawing in all light around it.

As the energy continued to pour in, the spell orb grew in size. The eyes of the surrounding mages were glued to it, and they could clearly sense the destructive force swirling inside.

Even with his eyes closed, Alaric could feel the orb. He could feel its rhythm, the way it pulsed and condensed.

It was perfect.

He shifted his focus to the portal, aiming the energy precisely, double-checking the target location.

At last, he opened his eyes.

He pressed his palms together, aligning them perfectly.

With that final motion, the orb of energy launched forward, hurled toward the Dark Portal.

This spell was called "Ultimate Annihilation Sphere", a black void orb composed of pure nothingness, capable of applying disintegration effects to anything it touched.

Disintegration was a terrifying spell, it could instantly kill any living creature it hit and completely break down inanimate objects into fine ash.

Only a target's vitality or sheer size could resist it.

At its strongest, disintegration could even destroy artifacts.

Alaric, through masterful magical control, had formed a super-sized annihilation orb, massive enough to affect even the Dark Portal.

When it struck the heart of the portal, its power spread outwards and flowed into the structure.

The next moment, portions of the Dark Portal began to collapse. Large chunks of its gray-black stone turned instantly to ash.

The portal was massive, and the energy within it was terrifying. Even a spell like the Ultimate Annihilation Sphere couldn't fully destroy it.

But that wasn't necessary.

Under the force of the orb, the surface of the Dark Portal became cratered and fractured. Most of the structure supporting the portal's frame was obliterated.

In the next instant, the unstable portal detonated in a massive explosion.

The shockwave sent most Alliance soldiers stumbling. Even Alaric nearly lost his footing, but Onyxia was quick enough to rush forward and catch him.

The explosion shattered the massive lintel and surrounding stone columns of the gateway.

Fortunately for the nearby Alliance troops, most of the flying debris had been reduced to dust by the annihilation spell.

And then, the portal vanished.

The once-turbulent colors gave way to a blank void.

Alaric could feel it, when the connection to Draenor was severed, the earth began to breathe again, freed from the pull of that dying world. Nature would now begin to recover.

He knew the portal would be reopened one day, but for now, he was deeply satisfied.

The war was over. The Alliance had claimed ultimate victory.

For now at least, their world was safe.
