Chapter 526 - Chapter 526: Mission from Dalaran

A few days after Alaric finalized his plans, the Kirin Tor's Council of Six convened a special meeting in the floating halls of Dalaran.

The initiator of this meeting was none other than Krasus, the red dragon disguised as a mortal. Having received this mission from his queen, he eagerly seized the opportunity to rescue his fellow dragons and earn her favor.

As one of Alexstrasza's most devoted followers, Krasus, after personally verifying the situation, immediately called for this assembly.

During the meeting, Krasus shed his usual passive demeanor and presented all the intelligence he had gathered about Grim Batol to his fellow council members.

He exaggerated the threat that dragons posed to the Alliance, striving to make his five colleagues understand the gravity of the situation.

Though Dalaran often remained aloof from worldly affairs, even in matters of war between the Alliance and the Horde, the news concerning dragons caught their attention.

Most notably, according to Krasus's intelligence, the orcs had seemingly found a way to control dragons.

This unknown method intrigued many of the mages present.

Moreover, among the Six, one member had a direct stake in the matter—Kael'thas.

As both a member of the Council of Six and the prince of Quel'Thalas, he knew that his nation's army, as part of the Alliance, might soon have to face dragonfire on the battlefield.

Thus, the council unanimously decided to send an envoy to Grim Batol.

Even if this envoy failed to complete the mission or uncover the orcs' method of controlling dragons, they could at least gather intelligence for future operations.

Naturally, due to the sensitive nature of the mission—including certain mages' undisclosed ambitions to discover and possibly wield the method of dragon control—the council chose not to report their findings to the Alliance leadership. Instead, they opted to handle the matter in secrecy.

However, choosing the envoy led to a dispute among the council members.

First and foremost, none of the six archmages were willing to take on the mission themselves. Even for them, it was an extremely dangerous endeavor, possibly requiring a confrontation with legendary dragons. If possible, they would rather not take the risk.

Krasus, being aware of certain inside information, knew that the mission was not as perilous as it appeared.

After all, there were greater powers monitoring the situation—the Aspects. With such beings involved, even a pig sent on this mission would likely return alive.

Of course, he did not share these dragon-related secrets with the mortals present.

Thus, the debate over the envoy's selection continued.

Naturally, Rhonin—the protagonist of the original storyline—was out of the question.

At this time, the future leader of the Kirin Tor was merely an apprentice mage, still climbing the ranks in Dalaran. He would not make a name for himself for at least another four or five years.

In the end, the chosen envoy was the youngest Archmage of Dalaran and its rising star: Sandorer—Alaric's alias.

Alaric's selection was largely due to his powerful backing.

Firstly, as the initiator of the meeting, Krasus strongly recommended him.

Although the red dragon himself was not particularly fond of this newly arrived human mage (at least from the perspective of a dragon's long lifespan), he had to obey his queen's directive.

Krasus had no idea what Alexstrasza saw in this fortunate human, but as her devoted follower, he had no choice but to comply.

Secondly, Kael'thas also supported Alaric. Initially, the elven prince considered sending a high elf to handle the matter, believing that someone from his own people would be more reliable in safeguarding Quel'Thalas's interests.

However, amidst the heated debate, he ultimately cast his vote for Alaric.

Despite his personal resentment toward the human mage—largely due to Alaric's close relationships with two of Quel'Thalas's most esteemed female rangers (it was rumored that Kael'thas once pursued Sylvanas)—he had to admit that Alaric was the most suitable choice for protecting high elven interests.

As a prince who prioritized his people's safety, Kael'thas set aside his personal grievances when duty called.

In the end, the other council members had no choice but to agree to this decision.

At the very least, Alaric, as a newcomer, had no deep personal ties or vested interests with any of them.

In fact, Alaric had orchestrated Krasus's involvement in the Council of Six precisely for this outcome.

He had carefully leveraged his diplomatic ties with the high elves and his neutral stance in Dalaran's political landscape.

As a highly capable yet politically unaligned mage, he became the most acceptable compromise among the Kirin Tor.

Thus, he was almost certain that he would be chosen as the envoy.

Of course, given Alaric's high status within the Alliance, the Kirin Tor still sought his consent.

His response? What else could it be?

Since he had orchestrated the entire affair from behind the scenes, he naturally agreed without hesitation.

In truth, if by some unlikely chance he had not been chosen, he had already prepared contingencies.

Any alternative candidate would have found themselves in an unfortunate accident within a few days, rendering them temporarily unfit for duty.

Yet, as expected, after all the deliberation, the role fell to him.

Ultimately, Alaric was assigned the mission of forming an elite team to infiltrate Grim Batol.

The mission parameters were simple. The ideal outcome was to rescue the red dragons, uncover the orcs' method of dragon control, and deliver the findings to the Kirin Tor.

If these goals proved unattainable, then at the very least, the operation would serve as reconnaissance.

Of course, both Alaric and Krasus found Kirin Tor's naïve ambitions laughable.

After all, powerful Aspects would be monitoring the entire operation, and there was even a possibility of a full-scale battle between them.

Did the Council of Six truly believe they could simply seize the Demon Soul from the dragons and bring it back to Dalaran?

Apologies, but even if all six archmages went together, they wouldn't stand a chance.

With his official authorization from the Kirin Tor, Alaric also gained the council's support.

At the very least, being on a mission for the Kirin Tor provided him with an official excuse.

As an Alliance commander's adjutant and advisor, his sudden disappearance for a secret operation would no longer raise suspicion.

Furthermore, through deals between Dalaran and the Alliance, he gained access to valuable resources: the ability to mobilize Alliance assets, utilize intelligence networks, and independently assemble his own task force.

These were privileges he would not have been able to claim outright under his previous identity.

Thus, the mission began.
