Chapter 277 - Chapter 272:- Apology

All Might stood tall, though his frame had long lost the grandeur of his prime. He looked around the summit chamber, his voice steady but heavy with a deeper emotion.

"This peace… I'm grateful for it, as I'm sure all of us are. But before we continue with this summit, there's something I must say—something I owe to all of you."

He inhaled deeply, his eyes lowered. Then, slowly, he raised them. They held sorrow… and shame.

"Five weeks ago, as many of you know, there was chaos and mutiny in I-Island. The board members and my previous sidekick David Shield were brutally killed and publicly displayed. I-Island, a beacon of science, progress, and international cooperation—faced one of the biggest mutinies in its history.

And though our investigation continues... we are trying to find whether what happened was actually true or someone's attack on the science island with the intention of disrupting the hero industry.

"I hate to admit it, but some truths have already surfaced. Truths that have left me utterly shaken."

He paused, his throat tightening as his voice lowered.

"The man who led I-Island's security and research… was once my dearest friend. My comrade. My brother in arms. My sidekick. David Shield."

A ripple of murmurs stirred across the floor.

"I trusted him with my life. He supported my journey. We bled together for the safety of the innocent. But it seems… somewhere along the way, I failed to see the darkness creeping into his work."

He swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly before he clenched them tightly behind his back.

"David was conducting illegal experiments. On quirkless people. Injecting them. Torturing them in the name of awakening power. Artificial quirk enhancement… without consent. Without mercy.

Something that's not just inhumane but also morally and ethically wrong. I don't know much about science, but I feel scientific evolution shouldn't come at the cost of human life—innocent human life."

Gasps filled the air. A few international heroes stiffened in their seats. Others simply stared at the floor. Big nations like America, India, and China already knew about this, but for smaller nations, they were hearing something like this for the first time.

"By the time we uncovered it, it was too late. The island had already become a testing ground. An abomination hidden beneath a peaceful surface. And though David has paid the price… the blood spilled there cannot be ignored."

He lowered his head.

"I… take full responsibility. Not as a hero. But as a man. A friend who turned a blind eye. I should have seen the signs. I should have acted. And for that… I offer my deepest, most sincere apology to every nation, every hero, and every soul affected by this betrayal."

A long silence followed All Might's words. No music. No sound. Just the weight of truth.

Then, from the Indian delegation, Raksha stood—her figure tall, wrapped in a modern armored sari, her eyes sharp but not unkind.

"Yagi Toshinori… All Might," she began, her voice strong. "You are a symbol, not just to Japan, but to the world. A name spoken with hope, even in the darkest alleys of Mumbai. But that is why this cuts deeper than it should."

She stepped forward, her tone calm but firm.

"You say you trusted him. That you were friends. But trust—especially at your level—is a responsibility. The world put faith in you, and through you, in him. We didn't just lose a research island… we lost lives, and for many nations, a sense of safety we barely had."

The room remained utterly still.

"But…" Raksha's voice softened, her tone more measured now, "you stood here and said it. Not through PR. Not through silence. You faced the world. That does matter."

She gave a small nod of respect.

"It takes more courage to admit failure than to charge into battle. And you, even weakened, still show us what real strength is. We accept your apology."

The tension in the room eased ever so slightly.

Captain Valor gave a solemn nod. "You've given the world more than most ever could. This doesn't erase that. But we'll remain vigilant."

Éclair added gently, "We'll look forward, together. That's what matters now."

All Might bowed his head slightly—grateful, though clearly weighed down by the moment.

"Thank you. Truly."

He slowly returned to his seat. Though the moment had passed, the weight of it pressed harder than ever on his chest. The faces around the summit table blurred slightly as his vision shifted—drawn inward, into memory.

Flashback No Jutsu

Five Weeks Ago – Japan

The moment the report reached him, he had refused to believe it. His hands had trembled, knuckles white around the paper that described the chaos: "Mutiny. Massacre. Evidence of unethical research. David Shield… brought to justice."

Toshinori didn't wait. He boarded a jet himself.

The journey to I-Island had never felt longer. When he arrived—what once stood as a symbol of global innovation and harmony was now a smoldering grave. Buildings unrecognisable, labs anew. Security drones more than ever swirled aimlessly in the sky.

And in the central square, a sight that would haunt him for the rest of his life—

There, strung from the shattered remains of the central tower, hung David Shield's rotting corpse. Bloated. Bloodied. Unrecognizable save for the tattered remains of his coat. His lifeless body spun slightly with the sea breeze.

At his feet was a rusted iron board—spray-painted in red:

> "This is the fate of those who abandon their humanity." Below it, like an artist signing their masterpiece, was a single name—Thanatos. Etched not in haste, but with the precision of pride.

All Might had dropped to his knees.

He couldn't breathe. His hands dug into the rubble as if trying to ground himself.

All Might (whispering, broken): "David… what did you do…?"

His voice cracked, disbelief shattering every syllable.

He barely remembered how he got up, or how his feet moved, but his next stop was the east engineering district. He had to find Melissa.

Outside Melissa's New Lab

He reached Melissa, after asking the bystanders as her previous lab in the east engineering district was a dead end.

As he reached outside her new lab, he hesitated for a bit before knocking on the door. Once. Twice. Then a security screen slid open above the reinforced door.

Melissa's voice, tired and cold, filtered through the intercom like wind scraping across glass. "What do you want?"

All Might's voice was soft, almost fragile. "Melissa… It's me. Toshinori. I… I just want to see you. Please."

There was a pause. A long, aching silence.

Then the door unlocked—but only halfway. She stood in the gap, her expression unreadable, eyes shadowed by exhaustion. Dark circles clung beneath her eyes like bruises from sleepless nights, and her golden hair was pulled back in a tight, practical bun.

She wore a plain lab coat, the kind that should've symbolized innovation and hope, but on her, it hung like a shroud. There was no warmth in her face. No flicker of affection.

"You shouldn't have come," she said, her voice flat.

Toshinori took a cautious step forward. "I had to," he said quietly. "I had to know if you were alright. I saw David—"

"He's not my father." Her words cut him off cleanly, like a blade through silk.

The blow landed harder than any villain's strike. His breath caught, and for a moment, he simply stared.

"His things are rotting in the backyard," she continued, her tone as dry as dust. "If you want them, take them. Burn them. I don't care."

She turned as if to leave, but he stepped toward her, his voice laced with desperation. "Melissa, wait—please. I know what he did was unforgivable, but—"

She spun around, eyes sharp now, voice flaring like a flame catching wind. "No. Don't do that. Don't act like you're any different."

Toshinori froze. The weight of her words pressed into his chest like lead.

"He hurt people because they were quirkless. You?" Her voice shook with bitter rage. "You left your own quirkless son to rot. To die."

He staggered back a step, struck silent from the sudden mention of Izuku. His throat tightened, but no apology could form.

"You talk about responsibility now," Melissa continued, "but where was all this remorse when your son needed a father? When Izuku—when he—was being bullied and ignored by his mother and so-called brother possessing a quirk.

While you were busy playing the hero and forgetting you had two sons rather than just one, he was picking himself up all by himself, all alone. While you were surrounded by people who would heal you in a moment's notice, he had to learn to patch himself up all by himself.

And why did he suffer so much? Because he was quirkless?! What's you guys' problem with quirkless people, treating them as if they are an alien existence?

You ignore the very existence of your son just because he was quirkless, while that bastard ruined thousands of lives just because I didn't have quirk. You both are the same. And now you are here trying to worry for me? Well I don't need your worry."

Her eyes glistened, but not from tears. There was no softness there—only clarity and disillusionment.

"I was stupid," she said, quieter now but with no less edge. "I thought you and David were heroes. Role models. People worth believing in. People who will bring change and peace to this world."

She shook her head, almost scoffing at herself. "But now I see it. David was a coward. And you… you're just a ghost clinging to a symbol you can't live up to anymore."

Toshinori opened his mouth, but there were no words to give. No redemption she wanted to hear.

"It was Izuku who opened my eyes," she said, her voice finally softening—not in forgiveness, but in reverence for someone else. "He helped rebuild trust here.

When all the residents of I-island were turning against me, trying to enact their revenge on me for the deeds of that blood related bastard, Izuku stood in front of me.

Protecting me, making sure I wasn't singled out. Making sure I didn't suffer for the deeds of that bastard. He faced the truth, and still chose to move forward. He's the only one worth following now."

She stepped back into the shadows of her lab, as if shutting away the past.

"I have work to do," she said, her voice echoing with finality. "Don't disturb me again. Get lost."

And then the door hissed shut.

The sharp hiss of the door shutting echoed in the sterile hallway, a cold full stop at the end of a conversation Toshinori had never imagined having.

For a long moment, he simply stood there, staring at the metallic barrier that now separated him from the young woman who once saw him as a second father.

His lips parted, trembling. He raised his hand to knock again, but it hung in the air, unsure. Powerless.

"Izuku…" he whispered to no one.

His voice was hoarse, barely audible over the hum of distant machinery. He swallowed thickly, emotions coiling in his chest like smoke in a collapsing house. A dozen questions fought to escape his throat, but none found the strength.

How did she know him?

Had Izuku been here? On I-Island?

Was he okay?

Did he still think of him?

Did he hate him?

Toshinori took a shaky breath and stepped back, dragging a hand down his face as if trying to wipe away the shame clinging to him like oil. His legs felt heavy, his heart heavier.

He looked down at his hand—scarred, fragile, nothing like the fist of justice it used to be. A ghost of a man, just as she said.

"Izuku… were you really here?" he muttered, voice cracking. "How have you been?"

His mind swirled with confusion and regret. Had Izuku really stood in front of Melissa when the people of I-Island turned on her? Had he shielded her, just as Toshinori once did for others?

"Is he… that strong now?" His voice trembled, not with fear, but with awe—and something far deeper. Sorrow.

"Is he… all grown up?" The words caught in his throat.

Toshinori leaned against the wall, suddenly aware of how small he felt—how removed he was from the world he once helped shape. "He's the only one worth following now," Melissa had said. The weight of that truth pressed down on him.

He had been the Symbol of Peace. A pillar. A beacon. But now, even Melissa—brilliant, broken Melissa—had found her strength not in him, but in Izuku.

Toshinori slid to the floor, back against the cold wall, his arms resting limply at his sides. His head dropped.

"Where are you, Izuku?"

He asked the silence.

"Are you happy? Are you safe? Do you hate me for what I did? For what I didn't do? What am I even asking, of course you hate me, after everything I've done to you, it's only natural for you to hate me."

The questions spilled out in a whisper, unanswered.

"Did I… lose you too? Yes I did, my downfall began the second I ignored you, the second I lost you."

And there he sat, a fallen hero swallowed by silence, haunted by the shadow of a boy who had grown into a better man than he ever was.
