Mathayus had just returned from one of his runs when one of the guards ran up to him. "Your Highness, you need to change immediately; the king wishes to see you in the throne hall." He says, out of breath.
Ten minutes later, Mathayus entered the throne hall. His father was seated on the throne, and the entire council was gathered in their respective spots on either side of the hall.
"Father? What is happening?" "Don't be alarmed, my son, I'm fine. I called this assembly because I need to step down from my duties for a few weeks at best. A lot has happened: your mother's and fiancée's passing, your disappearance, and finding out about your brother's betrayal. I think it's all beginning to take a toll on my health, hence the reason I summoned you." The king smiled proudly at his son.
"I need to make you my regent for those few weeks, while I recuperate." The king states. For a few seconds, Mathayus was stunned speechless, not that he wasn't ready to take over from his father, but this was very sudden and totally unexpected.
Snapping out of his daze, he knelt before his father. "It would be my honour to relieve your burden, Father." "Didn't doubt that for a second," the king nodded at him. "Let the crowning ceremony begin." The king shouted to the council. "Yes, your Majesty." They all respond in unison.
"You do know that you're allowed to check up on me whenever you wish, right?" the king asked Mathayus an hour later as the ceremony came to an end. "I'm concerned for your health father," Mathayus say in a worried tone. "I know, but trust me when I say that I will be fine, I just need a little rest and I'll be back running the show in no time."
"I will trust your words father." Mathayus nods at him, but his dark eyes still show concern. "I can clearly see your deep concern, but I really need you to focus less on me and more on running this country."
"I will have no problem doing both father," Mathayus says, his eyes searching his father's face. "Okay then, it's clear that I won't be able to convince you otherwise, and now that the ceremony has ended, I will retire to my garden. I have some painting to catch up on," the king says, rising from the throne and beginning to descend the steps.
"Rest well, father." "With you running this country, resting well won't be a problem for me. You have been groomed for this position since birth. Now go take your rightful seat on that throne and come see me later before you retire to your quarters, okay." "I will be there father." The king then pats his son on his shoulder before leaving the hall, accompanied by his guards.
"We need to go over your itinerary for the next few weeks, your Majesty." One of the council members says. "Don't ever address me by that title again; that title is reserved solely for my father until his death." Mathayus's voice was calm yet very deadly.
"Forgive me....your...Highness." The council member stutters as he drops to his knees, bowing over and over before Mathayus.
"You may proceed." Mathayus orders. "Right away, your Highness." Another says opening a file while indicating with his head to the apologizing council member to leave the hall.
The king had just entered his private quarters when his phone rang. He recognized the number as one of his personal guards that he had sent to investigate the woman from the Island. "Report." He says, closing his door behind him.
"We have located the woman, your Majesty; she's currently pregnant. We have also located her doctor, but we will need a sample of the prince's D.N.A to rule him out as the father of her child." "Consider it done, and remember to be discreet; she should not be aware that she's been investigated." "Yes, your Majesty."
