Chapter 290 - Chapter 290 - Eragon vs Cannibal 01.

[Chapter Size: 3400 Words.]

---------------------------------------

Third Person POV

North, 298 AC.

---------------------------------------

Jon didn't know why, but he could certainly imagine, in that moment, what his entire family would think if they saw him in a situation like that.

After everything they had said, maybe it would've been better to find another way to deal with this, instead of going after that dragon and putting himself in danger right now.

Now Jon seemed cornered there—what an irony of fate...

Everything around was lit in green flames, while he stayed behind a rock among many others around him—the only thing keeping him from being bathed in fire.

If he were a normal man, he would've already been burned just from the heat of the flames passing by, heating up the entire place. With that heat so close to human skin, no one would survive—it would burn easily.

But Jon was different.

The dragon was still spewing emerald flames until, finally, it seemed to tire. The last bursts of fire passed by the area where Jon was with less intensity, and he could see many of the rocks melted, with glowing red patches due to the heat.

He just watched the creature carefully, as it kept growling, while approaching the pile of stones to see if it had killed that human.

The great king of Arctic—the man who had sailed the world, faced wars and battles—was now there, playing cat and mouse with a dragon that wanted to kill him personally, after having its mind violated.

Jon wasn't surprised to have failed in dominating its mind the moment he connected with the dragon directly. That was a creature that had lived for two centuries, and had never accepted anyone on its back.

Even Jon, with all his powers, couldn't deal with something so wicked easily. But he knew: the bond had already been created between them. The creature wanted to kill him now—but the bridge was still there, Jon and the black dragon were connected in that moment.

Jon could hear the sound of the creature moving, as its head began to rise over the piles of stone, searching for him.

Quickly, Jon dodged, taking advantage of a blind spot of the creature, and kept analyzing it.

His gaze turned for a moment to the darkness of the path he had come from, before returning his attention to the dragon, which was already staring at him with those same wicked eyes.

It had found him.

The creature swiftly charged, opening its mouth as it began generating more flames. Jon spun behind a rock, protecting himself, while feeling the stone simply begin to crumble behind him, as the flames kept hitting it.

This lasted for some time, until the dragon finally grew tired. Jon had to move, observing everything burned around him, and then the creature slammed its snout into the stones, knocking them down, searching for him.

But Jon was no longer in the same place.

The king of Arctic stayed alert, with sword and shield in hand.

ROOOARRRR! The dragon roared in rage as it saw him clearly, after finally knocking down the pile beside it and finding him.

As it approached to bite him, Jon moved quickly, with Blackfyre slashing near the creature's teeth, striking its skin.

The blade rang out, delivering a sting so strong it made the dragon recoil, growling in anger and slight pain, as blood began to trickle from the wound.

That was enough to drive the dragon mad as it lunged forward, while Jon hid and watched half the piles of stone simply explode, the creature's jaws snapping in the air before it pulled back, trying to see if the human was still alive.

The dragon crushed most of the stones with its teeth and lunged again, as Jon was quick to assert his will over the creature's mind once more.

That made the dragon recoil with a growl of anger, shaking its head from side to side, as Jon forced his mind upon it once again.

Blood continued to pour from Jon's nose, from the mental strain as he tried to impose his will over the creature's.

The connection broke again seconds later, when the dragon managed to free itself and, enraged, spewed flames and charged toward the last pile of stones, wanting to kill the human.

But before it could get close, a thunderous sound echoed from the cave entrance.

Before Cannibal could reach Jon, something just as large ran toward him through the cavern, illuminated by the lava's light below, its armor reflecting the glow.

A white dragon covered in Valyrian steel emerged, charging swiftly at Cannibal, ramming into him with force. The black dragon was forced to halt its flames, facing the intruder in fury and trying to bite him, even though it was three times larger than its opponent.

Jon quickly emerged from the piles of stone, looking at Eragon, who now dodged Cannibal's bites, attacking his back with fury.

The white dragon dug its claws into the enemy's body and shoved him violently.

ROOAARRR!

ROAR!

The black dragon tried to sink its teeth into the new foe as the two dragons battled one another.

Cannibal didn't even notice the maneuver in time. When he finally realized, his right leg no longer touched the ground with his wing—and he began to fall.

Eragon was still pushing him with force, as the roars of both dragons echoed through the entire cave, with the black dragon trying to recover, but it was already too late.

Cannibal finally lost his balance and fell backward, plummeting toward the lava pool with another roar of fury.

Jon ran to Eragon while the white dragon looked at him, seeming worried for his father. Jon approached and checked his armor: it was a bit dented, but hadn't been pierced, even though Cannibal had managed to strike a few times while Eragon was pushing him.

"Let's wait outside!" he shouted, jumping onto Eragon, beginning to climb the stairs in his own armor.

Jon fastened a steel wire—his belt—to stay secure on the dragon's body, which quickly turned around toward the exit.

"Let's go. We'll have to face him in the sky and elsewhere," Jon muttered, as Eragon began to run toward the exit, spewing red flames to light the way.

Cannibal had fallen with half of his body in the lava, but soon rose, consumed by fury.

He quickly left the lava zone and leapt into the sky. His wings beat with such force they created violent winds throughout the cave.

Eragon ran easily on his four legs through the cavern, and Jon finally saw the exit approaching just as he felt a glow behind him.

Cannibal was coming, making a turn in the air as fast as he could, even slamming into the opposite wall. The whole place trembled with the force of his wings, and he kept spewing flames nonstop.

The dragon quickly followed them. Jon and the white dragon were now his declared enemies.

In the middle of the gigantic hole, the armored dragon ran with all four legs, and upon reaching the open sky, his wings finally spread.

Eragon took flight.

At the same time, in the same one-hundred-and-fifty-meter-wide hole, the black dragon emerged with his hundred-meter-long body, spreading his wings right behind the armored dragon as he opened his mouth in fury.

ROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR

His roar made the entire island quake. In every inhabited part, people turned their faces toward the mountain peaks, frightened by the sound and what it might mean.

It seemed the battle was leaving Skagos, as Jon analyzed the dragon's progress, following them through the sky just behind. They had already left the central part of the island and were now heading toward the continent.

Cannibal showed no hesitation in chasing them. His eyes showed nothing but hatred—and so he continued in pursuit of Eragon.

"Well, we've got his attention, finally," Jon nodded, satisfied, while searching the sky for any sign of a storm. But the northern sky was clear. He wanted some weather to help him in the air, with Eragon's special abilities.

ROOOARRR

A roar came from behind, and Jon raised an eyebrow.

"That dragon can fly faster than Eragon... even with his size..." he observed.

Still, it kept following. Cannibal was trying to get closer and closer, and Jon looked down, ignoring the monster that trailed them, able to see even Karhold in the distance, wondering if the people there had heard the roar.

It seemed the sound reached dozens of kilometers.

The black dragon kept beating his wings, drawing closer to Jon, while he and Eragon continued northward.

"Let's try to take him to the other side of the North, maybe we can tire him out by then..." Jon decided, still maintaining that cat-and-mouse game with the black dragon, who was now finally getting close enough to start acting sometime soon.

Opening his mouth, Cannibal unleashed green flames at Jon.

"We're almost there," he said, as Eragon dodged easily, moving out of the way of the blaze.

Cannibal kept launching more flames that streaked across the sky, and they seemed to intensify with the wind in his favor.

He was getting closer and closer, with Eragon not needing to look. Jon simply gave mental commands, making the dragon dodge the flames.

"Close your wings! Get in closer!" Jon muttered. "We're going to start losing speed quickly and attack..."

More blasts of flame, similar to wildfire, were unleashed, but Cannibal lost sight of Jon for a moment. His fire began to cease, and he no longer saw any sign of them ahead.

That's when he felt something coming from beneath him—a chilling sensation shooting against his belly.

Immediately, he looked down, irritated, and saw Eragon emerging from below, firing white flames that began to crystallize the dragon's skin.

Furious, Cannibal launched fire downward, but Eragon stopped breathing white fire and spun to the side, dodging the green blaze.

Cannibal descended a few meters, leveling with Eragon and trying to get close to devour the other dragon, but was met with another burst of flames right to the face.

Eragon turned his neck to the side and kept firing, letting out a roar of anger.

Cannibal also roared, equally furious.

Instead of trying to approach, he fired back.

The green flames clashed with the white flames, in a direct confrontation in midair.

Cannibal held a slight advantage, pushing his blaze toward Eragon. However, despite his smaller size, Eragon's fire began to overpower it.

Eragon's firepower was greater—and he soon began to turn the tide.

Eragon made his flames explode once more against the black dragon's head, roaring in fury.

When the fire began to engulf Cannibal, his body grew heavy, becoming frozen.

Quickly, he flapped his wings, pulling out of Eragon's range, rising into the sky before he began shooting green flames again.

Eragon stopped attacking for a moment and maneuvered into an angle where he wouldn't be struck by the flames. He quickly dodged as a storm of fire passed by them.

Jon, where he was, felt the adrenaline at its peak with all of it—and he could tell Eragon felt the same.

The white dragon simply roared at Cannibal, and the creature responded immediately, firing another blast of fire.

The sound of flames and dragon growls was the symphony in the northern sky at that moment. Some people, in nearby villages, looked up, trying to understand what was happening. Some even mistook the deafening sounds for thunder.

"We need to do it now," Jon had decided.

Eragon made his eyes shine like sapphires. His wings began generating icy mist, and he shot forward before Cannibal could get close enough to bite him.

He released a dense burst of ice, much larger than the previous ones.

Cannibal roared in rage, as Eragon made a sharp turn in the sky.

Jon could see the sea, showing they had crossed the entire North and were on the other side of the continent, even able to spot Bear Island.

Cannibal tried to keep Eragon in sight, but the white dragon simply shot forward with speed.

Then, he curved through the air and dove downward in a straight plunge.

Cannibal saw that he was the dragon's target all too clearly. Eragon came so fast that the massive black dragon didn't even have time to react.

In a violent impact, Eragon landed on Cannibal's back with a thud that made Jon tremble. Eragon, with effort, wrapped the dragon with his four legs, trying to hold on tightly.

The black dragon roared in rage, but Eragon began spewing white flames directly onto his back, pushing him even further downward, while his claws stayed latched onto the creature's body, pinning it in place—as Jon had instructed.

Cannibal began to lose altitude rapidly. He tried to bite his opponent, but couldn't even reach him, with the white dragon firmly on top of him in the middle of the sky.

Eragon began freezing Cannibal's wings, who roared with even more fury.

The black creature was completely losing control of the flight.

Jon watched, satisfied, as he held on tight—he was merely an insect in the fight between these two titans.

The black dragon tried everything to shake them off, but without success. His wings, paralyzed, caused him to plummet like a stone.

There was no hiding it now—two dragons were falling from the sky.

People from a nearby village, west of the North, were startled as they heard Cannibal's furious roars echoing through the sky.

They looked up, stunned, as they saw a black creature falling with another, armored one latched onto it.

"Now!" Jon shouted.

Eragon pushed back, opening his wings, pulling away from Cannibal at the last second.

The black creature fell alone, crashing into the ground with a devastating impact. Trees, rocks, and everything in his path were destroyed by the blow of the fall.

Jon knew: this was only one phase of his plan.

It was necessary, first, to get close to Cannibal—that's why he had gone ahead alone to force his mind, to create the permanent bond before fighting for him.

And now, with him weakened, it was time to tame him completely—and make him obedient.

Now, he needed to weaken him further. The black dragon thrashed on the ground, with various parts of his body covered in ice. He couldn't move or even breathe properly due to the impact. The layer of ice began to crack as he tried to rise quickly.

But Eragon appeared the next moment, leaping onto him and biting his neck. The black dragon roared in pain, trying to pull away from the smaller, insolent creature. Jon held on tightly, still atop Eragon, trying not to be crushed.

The black dragon finally managed to land a bite on Eragon, his fangs striking the front legs armored with Valyrian steel. Jon could feel the creature's eyes glaring at him with pure hatred, as it tried to bite harder and sink its fangs into the white dragon's neck, making him roar in pain.

Jon could feel Eragon's armor beginning to dent. They couldn't stay there—the black dragon was far too strong.

"We need to get out of here, now!" Jon demanded, seeing that Cannibal still had too much strength. Eragon tried to escape, but he was stuck—the black dragon clamped his leg tightly, nearly crushing the Valyrian steel. Jon could even feel Eragon tremble in pain.

Jon unfastened the saddle buckle and quickly jumped, drawing Blackfyre. He leapt from Eragon straight onto Cannibal's head, which was near him and refusing to release his dragon.

Without a second thought, he ran toward the creature's eye and drove a direct blow into one of the emerald pupils.

The effect was immediate. The dragon screamed in pain, the sword piercing its eye with ease. Jon felt the blade slice clean through the eyeball as the creature pulled back, lifting its head violently.

Jon lost his balance and began to fall—over fifteen meters in the air—still gripping the sword.

He landed with a dull thud, the armor crumpling from the impact. The air was knocked from his lungs, the world spinning around him. A sharp ringing filled his ears as he saw, blurred, the black dragon in the distance, roaring in fury, blood pouring from its eye in a dark torrent.

Cannibal began unleashing fire in all directions, in a blind frenzy.

Eragon appeared in front of Jon, crashing into the black dragon, shielding his father with his own body.

Jon started to recover, sensing the urgency, as his body seemed to respond by sending a new dose of adrenaline, sharpening his senses.

"Quick... we need to get out of here!" Jon murmured, realizing that fighting Cannibal on the ground was a terrible idea.

He looked at his leg—it was bleeding. The dragon had managed to wound him, but Eragon showed no sign of pain, though Jon looked on anxiously.

But Jon had to act, and he quickly climbed onto the white dragon.

Cannibal, at last, seemed to calm slightly. He roared in fury, staring at Eragon with the only eye he had left. The other had become a stream of blood pouring down his head. He bore other wounds too, like the cut on his mouth and the bite marks on his neck.

Eragon also roared directly at Cannibal, and Jon slapped the dragon, urging him to fly immediately.

Eragon turned and began to ascend, soaring toward the sky, with the black dragon quickly following them in even greater fury—as if, even if it were the last thing he did, he would kill them both.

"Okay... how are you?" Jon muttered, watching the blood stream down his leg and fall through the sky as they fled.

Eragon seemed to say he was fine through their mental link, while Jon looked back, seeing the black dragon flapping his wings hard, coming right after them.

They quickly gained altitude, flying above five thousand meters.

They advanced toward the center of the North, as Jon watched the horizon.

"We need to find a storm... let's head east... to Essos..." Jon decided, with Cannibal determined to chase them to the ends of the world.

The people who had been near the area where the dragons fell were in shock at the sight of that deadly battle.

Emerald flames had left trails through the forest, burning everything around.

The roars made the ground tremble, while some swore they had seen "giant winged creatures flying through the sky"—one of them so massive it darkened even the sun.

At the same time, in the training yard of Winterfell, everything seemed normal.

Arya stood still, looking at the Dornish fool lying on the ground after losing a sparring duel.

Everyone applauded the flawless skill of the princess of Arctic, who had even defeated the Dornish warrior with her Valyrian steel sword against his spear—thinking he could impress her on the battlefield—something that completely backfired.

"Very well!" commented the king, in a better mood that day.

He was cheerful today, laughing, smiling as he saw the shame—and even indignation—on the Dornish boy's face, being helped up by his companions.

Arya's brothers clapped as well, proud, while she smiled, ignoring the queen's bitter glare.

Then suddenly, in the sky, everything changed, as roars began to echo, making everyone look up, searching for the source of the sound in the middle of the sky.

"Thunder?" Robb asked, bewildered.

"But the sky is clear..." murmured Bran, while Arya narrowed her eyes before opening them almost in alarm, turning to her royal guards.

"Could it be him...?" she murmured, and the guards seemed to agree, though they didn't know exactly what was happening.

Everyone searched for any sign in the sky, but the dragons were so high up that no one could see them with the naked eye.

Arya didn't know that Jon was battling a giant dragon at that moment—and that left her utterly confused.

She immediately left the yard and ran to the weirwood tree, trying to establish a connection with the birds in the sky to see what was happening, while everyone in Winterfell still looked to the heavens, searching for the source of the sound.
