"Mom, can we get ice cream today after school?" Selena asked her mother while they were sitting at the table, eating breakfast. Their home was not what you would call a mansion, but it was enough for them. It was a warm place where Selena knew love and family.
"We will see. You have practice after school anyway, and if it ends too late, I can't promise anything," Rebecca said, looking at Selena and touching her head.
James entered the kitchen at the moment, "Where are the boys, honey?" he asked as he took his seat in front of his plate.
"Both Justine and Samuel headed out early. They mention going to the pack house." Rebecca said as she put her dishes in the sink. " Selena, hurry up and finish up, or you are going to be late."
"I am all done," Selena said as she picked up her plate and took it to the sink.
"Go brush your teeth and get your bag so we can go," Rebecca said as she finished washing the dishes.
"Mom, I am done, let's go," Selena said as she opened the front door.
James came out with them. He was laughing at something Selena had said when he smelled wolves. Wolves that didn't belong to the pack. "Beca, take Selena and get back in the house," James said, looking at his wife.
Rebecca walked Selena back to the house, but they stopped in their tracks before they could get to the door. A growl was heard, and wolves started to come out of the woods and form a semicircle around them. "Mom?" Selena said as she held her mother's leg as she shook with fear.
"It's okay, my little wolf, everything is going to be okay," Rebecca said as she put Selena behind her and tried to cover her as much as she could. Rebecca turned toward James and was able to get a full picture of what they were dealing with. There were four wolves in total. How they had managed to cross their border and make it all the way to their home was a question that they were going to have to try to find the answer to later.
"James?" Rebecca called out.
'I have called the Alpha, he knows about the rogue, we just need to hold off until they get here,' James's mind linked to his wife.
"Don't worry, honey, we will be okay," James said, keeping his eyes on the wolves. There was a prolonged silence before two of the wolves attacked.
"Dad, be careful," Selena called out as the wolf lunched toward James. At the same time, the remaining two wolves turned their eyes toward Selena.
"Honey, I need you to find a place to hide and make sure not to come out until we get you," Rebecca said, holding Selena's hand and squeezing her before letting her go. "Selena, let me know you understand what I just told you to do."
"Yes, Mom," Selena said as she also nodded her head, even though her mother couldn't see her do it.
"Good girl, now go hide," Rebecca said, letting go of Selena's hand.
Selena made her way to a hiding spot she usually used. It kept her hidden from the people who were in the front of the house, but she was able to see what was going on in the front of the house.
James fought off the two wolves that charged at him; he had to change into his wolf form to continue fighting them off. When he saw the other two wolf heads toward his mate, he became even more furious and kept attacking with all of his might. Rebecca at seeing the other two wolves charge toward her, Rebecca changed into her wolf form and attacked them. She fought with all of her might.
James didn't know when it happened, but one of the wolves got the upper hand and tore at his neck. James fell on the ground. He could hear Rebecca howl as she could feel his spirit leaving her body. Rebecca changed back to her human and called out, "I love you," before the wolf attacked her and sent the kill shot toward her neck. James was becoming weak by the second and was unable to help out. He could only see as his wife lost her life in front of him, and the last thing James and Rebecca saw before their eyes closed was one of the wolves heading toward the house and the hiding Selena.
Selena was trying to remain quiet so that the wolves couldn't find her. Thankfully, Selena didn't have to wait long before reinforcements came to the rescue.
"Who dares trespass on my lands and attack my pack?" Alpha Ben roared as he stood in front of the enforcers of the pack, looking down at the rough wolves. "Get them, make sure to at least leave one alive to interrogate him."
Alpha Ben moved over to James' body. James' heartbeat was low. "Hold on, the pack doctor is coming," Alpha said, but James was in his last moment, and he knew it.
"Take care of Selena, please," James said with his last breath as the life left his body.
Alpha closed James' eyes and moved over to Rebecca. She took her last breath, and her eyes closed as well. From the woods, two young wolves came out running. They transformed back to human, put on a pair of shorts each, and came running.
"Mom, Dad," Justine and Samuel called out as they saw their parents on the ground.
Alpha Ben came over to the boys. Justine had just turned 18th and had graduated from high school last year. Samuel was 16 and had just gone through his first shift. Both of the boys had been at the pack house as it was the customer of the younger wolves. "Boys, do you know where your sister is?" Alpha Ben asked, James had entrusted his daughter into his care, but she was not in the yard.
"Selena was with Mom and Dad, she should be here," Justine said, looking around the yard, the only familiar bodies were those of his parents.
"Selena, where are you?" Samuel called out as he whipped his eyes and started to make his way toward the house. They had played hide and seek before, and everyone in the family knew Selena's favorite hiding spot. As Samuel approached the hiding spot, he could hear Selena's faint cries. Samuel opened the door. "Come on out, Selena," Samuel said as he extended his hand out to his sister.
"Sammy," Selena said as she looked up at him. "Mom and Dad," Selena couldn't continue and started to cry again.
"I know," Samuel said as he reached for Selena's hand and pulled her toward him.
Justine came in and saw Samuel hugging Selena to him. He headed over to the two of them and pulled them both into a hug. Selena looked up at him, "Jus, what are we going to do?"
Justine tried to comfort her, "We will be okay, Selena. Mom and Dad might be gone, but we still have Alpha Ben and the pack. We will be okay." Justine said as he patted her back.
