"Emily, darling. It's been so long!"
A smile immediately spread across my face when I saw Carol. Before I could even set my bags down, she pulled me into a big hug.
"I never thought I'd see you again," she said, pulling back, her eyes shining with affection. "How are you? Look at you—skinnier than ever. Shawn, you better take care of her now that she's here."
"You don't have to tell me that, Mom. And stop smudging my mate," Shawn replied with a slightly annoyed tone. He'd been acting off ever since that phone call on our way here. I'd thought about asking him what was wrong, but decided against it. Carol didn't respond to his attitude—just brushed it off like she was used to it.
"You must be starving after that flight. Come on, I've prepared a huge feast." She latched onto my arm and I had no choice but to follow her lead.
The moment we stepped into the mansion, I was stunned. Everything screamed luxury. For a second, I felt like I'd walked into a palace.
