[Pinnacle Academy, East Wing - Second Floor]
[Wednesday, 8:04 PM]
Damon Bennett had watched the whole thing from a bathroom on the fourth floor.
It was not a dignified place to conduct surveillance. The mirrors above the sinks were spotted with old water marks and somebody had scratched something obscene into the corner of the left one, and he had stood there for eleven minutes with his own pocket mirror open in his palm, watching a seventeen-year-old boy move around his office in the dark.
He had learned three things.
The first was that the boy could pick a staff lock in under four seconds, which was not a skill taught anywhere in this building.
The second was that the boy had not turned on the light.
Every student Bennett had ever caught in a room they shouldn't be in had turned on the light.
It was almost involuntary that panic reaches for the switch.
