Chapter 4: 4 Hello Little One
The week passed, and Izuku hadn't heard anything from Robin. He had managed to get in touch with Itsuka and she hadn't heard anything either. He was starting to panic. They had never gone this long without communicating. He was hoping that with his birthday approaching. She might show up to surprise him. He focused his attention on his final exams. The thought was that if he could finish his school early. He could devote more time to training and to help Melissa with OFA. He had managed to help Melissa increase her control of One for All to about 20% in the first half of the new year.
He had just gotten home from the testing center the day before and was reviewing his grades. He had passed everything with an A and had been sweating Classic Lit. It had now been eight days and still no word from Robin. He had tried to call for a wellness check. But the police in that area refused to do so on the word of a possible ex-boyfriend. He had to ask All Might to see if he could pull some strings. All Might was aware that Robin knew everything. From when Izuku had met him on the beach to begin training almost a more than half a year ago. While the discussion was slightly heated. All Might knew there was no putting the genie back into the bottle. Izuku's passion for the girl and his intentions to marry her once he graduated sealed the deal for the pro. All Might had promised that he would see what he could do and get back to him. But he did not know when he could do so.
A knock at his door snaps him out of his worries. When he went to the door he smelt three different scents and one he knew how it was. The other two he did not know. But one of them was somewhat familiar. He decides to open the door, and he was somewhat surprised to see Kobayashi standing there. He also notices a woman with a frog quirk standing behind him. She seems pleasant and dressed in a simple classic suit. Slightly confused, he invites them in. He headed to the kitchen to offer them a drink. As he returns with some bottles of water. Then he noticed that the woman was carrying a car seat. Looking at the occupant, he is sure that the child is Inari. He recognizes her from all the pictures that Robin had sent him. His knees wobble, and his voice cracks as he asks, "What can I do for you today?"
Mr. Midoriya, you need to sit down and listen to what I am about to say. Said Kobayashi gently but firmly. Izuku takes a seat as he notices the woman looking around the apartment, seemingly judging the state of the home. Izuku is about to say something when Kobayashi gets his attention.
Mr. Midoriya, I need you to ignore Mrs. Asui for the next few minutes and focus on me. Can you do that? Asked Kobayashi in the same tone in his voice he had earlier.
Izuku did not trust his voice. So he nodded his head.
Mr. Midoriya, I regret to inform you that there has been a terrible accident. Robin Uzumaki has been killed. Said Kobayashi and Izuku's mind immediately flashes to the unfinished bottle of booze. Not only does he think about it. But he also knows precisely where it was. In his shock; his hands started to tremble.
NO. NO. THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING NOT AGAIN! PLEASE TELL ME THAT HE IS LYING. Thought Izuku and his thoughts were interrupted by Kobayashi snapping his fingers to regain Izuku's attention.
Mr. Midoriya, Robin had given birth to a child about a year to a year and a half ago, on December 15th. Said Kobayashi.
After he said that the text he got from Robin that had said "Best Day Ever!" Izuku's mind snaps to that strange text.
We have run a paternity test and the child is, in fact, yours, Mr. Midoriya. Said Kobayashi. The woman brings the car seat cover so Izuku can look down at his daughter. Wrapped around the car seat handle like a charm is a gold necklace with a gold dolphin charm with aquamarine eyes. Izuku sees the chain and immediately goes to talk. Only for his eyes to roll back into his head as he faints.
"Izuku's Mind"
What is going on? Oh, dear god, Robin is dead. I have a fucking daughter. It was Inari all a fucking along. Why didn't she say something? Asked Izuku.
It was the day I met All Might. That is what she needed to talk to me about. She was going to tell me that she was pregnant. She knew I would have dropped everything to be with her. But she wanted me to follow my dream. She wanted me to go to U.A. and become a hero. She hid this from me. We had a fucking daughter. I have a daughter. How am I going to raise a kid? I may have enough money to live on for many years and the amount is getting bigger each day. Why did they not take the child to her parents? If my name was on the birth record, is that why they brought her to me? Maybe her parents are out of town right now? Oh my fucking god. They will come home to find their daughter dead and their grandchild missing. Why didn't her dad say something or hell her mom. Thought Izuku.
Like a puzzle coming together it all fell into place. How she would gush all about Inari and share everything with me and now it was making sense. She shared my daughter's life with me so I would know how she was doing. How could she lie to me all this time? What am I going to do? Asked Izuku.
Shit. ALL MIGHT. What is he going to say? What is he going to do? Can I still be a hero? I have a daughter now. Wait, should I have a daughter? If her parents don't take Inari. I may give her up for adoption. I know nothing about kids. I have never even held one before. I don't think I can do this. Said Izuku.
The darkness dissipates as a reddish purple light emerges from in front of him. It starts to get closer and closer to Izuku. As it gets closer, he realizes that in the center of the light is a person, a male. With a final bright pulse, the light dissipated, and standing before him was an animalistic version of him. Green hair, red eyes, dark, sleeveless jacket with a high collar, dark elbow-length gloves, and black boots. He recognized her immediately from the pictures he had seen of his transformation.
How are you here and where am I? Asked Izuku.
We are in your fucking mind you fucking dome ass shit stain. Said the animalistic Izuku in a growling voice.
But how are you here? You are what I look like when I transform? Is this real? Asked Izuku as he looked around.
Yes, this is real. That's the easy part. You are inside of your quirk. The reason that I am here is because I am your transformation. I am all of your animal instincts given from. I might go away after you fully master your transformation. Said Animal Izuku.
So what am I doing here? Asked Izuku.
It was because you are not going to fucking leave our daughter. You are going to take her in and razer her. I may only be your animal instincts given from. Do you know why people do not take an animal's baby? Asked Animal Izuku.
Well because the animal will do anything just to get them back. Said Izuku.
Yes that is true. If you did not take Inari in I will fucking take over and stay in control over. Because I do not want our cub to be taken or razed by someone else. Growled Animal Izuku.
I know that. But I do not know how to take care of a kid. Said Izuku.
Do you think that any parent knows how to fucking take care of a kid? Asked Animal Izuku.
Hmm well most likely not. But if they have another kid. Said Izuku.
You do have some experience with a kid. Because of Pandora. She acts like your kid. So you kind of know how to take care of a kid. Said Animal Izuku.
Well Pandora is a few thousand year old upper demon that willingly became a Devil arm. Said Izuku.
That may be true. But she acts like she is only 4 or 5 years old. Said Animal Izuku.
Ok I will take Inari in. You do not need to worry about it. Said Izuku and he started to fade away.
Well it looks like you are waking up. Said Animal Izuku and he started to wake away.
"Real World"
As the world slowly came back into focus. Izuku's eyes fluttered open. Taking in the apartment's ceiling; gingerly, he turned his head to see Kobayashi staring at him and Mrs. Asui doing the same. She had a neutral look on her face showing neither concern nor dismissiveness.
How long was I out? Asked Izuku as he tried to sit up.
Just a few minutes and under these circumstances. It is understandable. So do not fret. Said Kobayashi and he Helped Izuku to sit up slowly.
Take your time. But there are some things that we need to address. Said Mrs Asui.
Izuku took a few more minutes to make sure everything was clear. His mind focused on what his animal Izuku had told him. The thought of his daughter. Aside from Robin's parents. And that Robin was gone, and Izuku was all the little girl had. It was unfair to think that he had to decide so soon that would affect his life and, more importantly, Inari's life. Errant thoughts that Robin may have been unfaithfully moved through his mind. Not only did he feel immediately guilty. But he also just as quickly immediately dismissed it and barred it dead down in his mind. She loved him, and he was sure that she had hidden the truth about Inari to allow him to follow his dream of being a pro hero. She had accepted the burden of being a single mother for him, doing her best to raise their daughter. All Might's words rang in his mind what he said that his master had said. But it changed in his mind to be "Smile for you're her world." Pushing down his tears, he ensured his full attention was on Kobayashi.
I am sure that you have questions. Said Kobayashi.
Yes I do, I have too many. First, tell me what happened to her. What of Robin's parents? And is she mine? Asked Izuku.
I can answer all that. But somewhat out of order. Now, please focus on what I am going to say. Said Kobayashi.
Izuku nodded for Kobayashi to proceed and focused on him as well.
Robin's parents were the villain's Blade Mistress and Evil Dragon. They had broken into a secure facility and stolen some sensitive information. I do not know what that information is. The villains retreated. Unknowing that they were already being tracked by pursuing Heroes. The heroes attacked the secluded home the villains were in. They did not thoroughly check the home and were unaware of Robin's nor Inari's presence. As the battle escalated. It had threatened her and the child's life. In an attempt to calm the conflict and protect Inari. Robin got in the middle of the fight and was unfortunately struck and grievously injured. Her parents immediately surrendered and medical attention was sought for Robin. Sadly, the help was too far away, and she succumbed to her injuries on route to the hospital. Before she had passed. She named you as the little girl's father, and made the paramedic promise to make sure you received her necklace. According to the testimony. She was adamant about that and kept saying she was sorry for not telling you. Genetic testing was done at the hospital confirming that Inari was your daughter. At which time I was notified as I am your legal representative in all matters. Said Kobayashi.
Izuku, who had been on the verge as soon as the story started. He began to cry softly, tears running down his cheeks.
Kobayashi continued after handing over a linen handkerchief. "Robin's parents have been arrested and they are going to jail for a long time. Even if that was not happening, raising Inari would be out of the question. You do have the right to give her up for adoption. You can also choose to take Inari in and raise her yourself. If you choose to do so. Mrs. Asui has been assigned as your caseworker. She is with the Child Safety Division. She would have the final say on if it would be in Inari's best interests to stay with you or be placed in foster care. Said Kobayashi.
Izuku's mind was filled with a flurry of thoughts. Was he capable of handling this situation? Could he pull it off? What if something happened to him? Hell, what if something happens to Inari? And how would he manage to balance being a hero and a teenage father? Suddenly, his inner turmoil was interrupted by the sound of a crying child. He watched as Mrs. Asui carefully lifted the child from the car seat and held her close. Doing her best to calm her down. Then, as he caught a glimpse of the child's eyes. He saw a beautiful blend of his and Robin's, a stunning teal color. He noticed strands of blue and green in the sunlight in her hair. He also noticed that she has the same kind of ears as Robin did. This wasn't just any child. But his daughter and Robin's. At that moment, all his worries dissipated. He had to do right by her. His resolve became unbreakable and he knew exactly what to do.
Izuku looked at Kobayashi with no tears in his eyes. There was instead a fierce determination in his eyes.
I will take her. I want to raise her. Said Izuku.
Good. Now Mrs. Asui is going to assess the house. After which she will have forms for you to sign and outline the program you must adhere to. I took the liberty of picking up some of the essentials that will see you through for now. I will inform you what needs to be adjusted with your stipend and the financial records. Said Kobayashi.
I will provide you with a copy of all the information that you need. Now, Mr. Midoriya, would you like to hold your daughter? Asked Mrs Asui.
Izuku nodded as the woman came over and guided him properly to hold Inari. For Izuku, it felt like they had handed him a bomb. Even though he most likely had more strength than All Might it still felt like he had a bomb in his arms. Even though he has full control over his strength it felt like he would either drop Inari or harm him. Anyone who had a child or even held a child knows that the bomb analogy is more accurate than others would give it credit for.
They left him there on the couch as Kobayashi went outside to bring in the items he mentioned, and Mrs. Asui went to perform her evaluation. Father and Daughter were meeting for the first time.
She gazed up at this new face. But yet it was a familiar face before her. Why was it familiar? She didn't know. When this person whispered her name. She liked it. She was mesmerized by the new face taking it all in.
Izuku was lost in a sea of teal. He felt himself melting. He knew he was sinking. Then Inari wrapped her little hand around one of his massive fingers and it was all over. She had him hooked and wrapped around her little finger. He knew he would move heaven and earth for her. Hell he would even be ready to kill someone that harms her. He couldn't help. But to smile and when he did. She smiled back and made noises at him. It was the most adorable thing he ever heard. They were lost in a little moment in time.
Kobayashi watched silently. Not wanting to ruin an obvious bonding moment. Although he had no children of his own. He was not immune to the cuteness of children. Watching the new father and his daughter staring at each other. He couldn't help but smile a little himself. He even looked to see Mrs. Asui admires the situation with a slight cough. She called for their attention.
Mrs. Asui told him that the apartment was adequate. But he would need to acquire many things and eventually he would need to get a bigger apartment someday. But for now, it was safe and clean "enough" for a start. She left him a detailed list of things he needed to acquire, should acquire, and areas that needed to be cleaned better. She deemed the supplies that Kobayashi brought to be a good start. She assisted him with Inari's first feeding, a diaper change (which Izuku was very nervous about doing). How to handle her, how to hold her, and how to take it when Inari would inevitably cry. The woman ran over a list of things for Izuku to do, pamphlets for him to read, and recommendations for support groups for single parents. She then sat down and detailed the program he would be entering to ensure he was fit for the new role. He had to sign some papers as she double checked the list. She then stood and made sure that Izuku knew that he should start looking for a bigger apartment. But before she had left Izuku let her know that he had a house that was much bigger than his apartment. Then he asked Kobayashi if he could take her to it. So she could look over the house and let him know what he needs to fix or change in his house. Kobayashi said that he would do so. But that would be when Mrs Asui has an opening next.
Now, Mr. Midoriya, the important thing is not to panic and avoid loud noises that will startle the child. I will be back tomorrow to perform a wellness check. I wish you the best of luck on your first night. If you have any questions, my number is at the bottom of my card. Good Night, Mr. Midoriya. Said Asui and bowed before excusing herself.
I will be in touch as well, Mr. Midoriya. I hope to be here tomorrow to review everything we need to do to comply with the regulations. I am sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you for enduring such heartbreak so soon. Said Kobayashi and he bowed before he left.
It was just the two of them left in the apartment. It took Inari a bit to process that they were not going to return. When this realization sank home. The experienced adults had left her in the presence of an amateur of the highest order. Even though he may be over 120 thousand years old he was still an amateur of the highest order. Inari began to cry. Izuku was calm for a very long 2 seconds. Ok, he went over to the pamphlet that Mrs. Asui had left. He was glancing over the list. She wasn't hungry, didn't want a bottle, her diaper was exemplary, and swaddling didn't work. He placed her on his shoulder, trying to stay calm. While looking at the diagrams in the pamphlet. He started to gently pat her back and lightly rub it up and down. Inari still cried, burped, and then threw up on her dad. Suddenly everything seemed better.
Are you fucking shitting me. She fucking threw up on me. Thought Izuku.
Deep in his mind, Animal Izuku was watching and laughed. This is what you got for taking our daughter. So all I have to say is welcome to fatherhood, bub. Said Animal Izuku.
"The Talk and Inari Meets Others"
After Izuku was able to settle Inari down. He started to think about his next step. He would need to go shopping for Inari. But he couldn't do that right now. He would have to wait to talk to Kobayashi first. Izuku had called Itsuka. He had to tell her what had happened to Robin and about Inari. He left a voicemail telling her to call him day or night. Because what he had to tell her was incredibly important. Staring at the phone. He knew the conversation he needed to have.
All Might looked at his ringing phone. Seeing his Izuku's name appear on the identification. He smiled and assumed that Izuku was calling to tell him about his final exams.
Young Midoriya, did you receive your grades? Asked All Might.
I did, Mr. Yagi, I passed everything with an A. But that is not the only reason why I am calling you. I know this is sudden. But I need you to come to my apartment immediately. There have been some developments, and I need to talk to you in person. Said Izuku in a sad but serious voice.
All Might could hear the unspoken plea in the boy's voice. In truth, he was about to depart to look for the boy's missing girlfriend. But something told him that Izuku needed him.
I will be there in about an hour, young Midoriya. Do you want me to bring Melissa with me? Asked All Might.
Thank you and yes I do think she should know as well. Oh I also think that we may or may not need to go see Recovery Girl. Izuku said. But before he could disconnect the call All Might stopped him.
What do you mean that we may need to see Recovery Girl? Asked All Might.
You will know when you and Melissa get here. I do not feel like saying it over the phone. Said Izuku and disconnected the call.
I wonder what young Midoriya will let us know. Thought All Might.
He took a deep breath, placing Inari in a highchair. He put some infant cereal on the tray to keep her occupied. As he fixed himself a quick meal. It was distracting enough, to say at least. He kept looking over his shoulder. Afraid that if he didn't, some catastrophe would befall his daughter, or that she might disappear. Having prepared a quick meal with some soft food to share. He sat and ate, taking joy when his daughter ate some of the food and hearing her smack the tray. It threw him for a loop, HIS DAUGHTER, his and Robin's daughter. His mind went to what he had missed already in Inari's life and all that Robin would forget. He managed to keep his emotions in check as he washed the dishes and wiped down the counters. Then there was a knock at the door that he stiffened, suspecting who was on the other side. But afraid of what that would mean. Taking Inari into his arms, he opened it, seeing the smiling face of Mr. Yagi and watching as it morphed into confusion at the child in Izuku's arms.
All Might and Melissa stepped into the house and removed their shoes. The silence was beginning to build. All Might and Melissa sat on the couch opposite Izuku and the child. Who took a seat on the other couch.
Um, Young Midoriya… I didn't know that you had taken a job babysitting. Said Yagi.
I have a feeling that is not what was happening. Thought Melissa.
Not exactly Yagi-San. Said Izuku and crossed the room. to lift Inari from the bassinet. All Might and Melissa, this is my daughter Inari. Inari, this the All Might and Melissa. Said Izuku and the girl cooed.
WWWWAAAATTTTT?! Yelled All Might as the girl burst into tears.
OH MY GOD SHE IS SO A FU…Yelled Melissa but was interrupted by Izuku.
Finish that sentence and I will break every single bone in your body in our next spare. Growled Izuku.
It took Midoriya 5 minutes to calm Inari down. While he was doing that he looked at All Might and Melissa. They looked sheepish while they studied Izuku and the child. Inari sat in her father's arms, sniffing as she finally settled down. Plus Izuku had released a set of his claws. But they were just bone claws not covered in his special metal.
I apologize for my outburst, young Midoriya. But I am sure you can explain this? Asked Yagi.
I am also sorry for my outburst as well, Izuku. Said Melissa.
I can, and I will. Said Izuku.
Midoriya then began to explain. He told All Might and Melissa everything about how he and Robin had sex before she left with her parents. She never told him that Inari was his daughter. She was just a kid that Robin was babysat for. Then Kobayashi and Mrs. Asui came over earlier that day as he finished his school finals. He also told them how Robin was dead. How her parents were villains, and how she had got caught in the crossfire trying to stop the fight to protect Inari. He told them how he thought about adoption and how he had passed out. Meet a more animalistic version of himself and what he had told him. And that he was going to keep Inari. However, he was terrified of failing his daughter, Robin, his mother, and All Might himself.
They were surprised when Izuku said that he would stop training with them if they did not want him to anymore. He was also reeling from the shock that somehow Izuku had talked to an animalistic version of himself.
Izuku would understand if All Might would ask him to stop training with them. But he could not give up on Inari. He needed to be the best hero for his daughter, and his mother and Robin because they were watching over him. All Might watched as the tears fell. They watched as Izuku tried to hide the emotion as he held his daughter. But he was struggling. Plus they had never seen Izuku cry before.
They took this all in. Could they do that to Midoriya? No Izuku. All Might had met with Nighteye's candidate, and Miro was undoubtedly on his way. He knew that in his heart, Izuku would have been the one if he had exempted OFA. But now he had a child. All Might, of course; he had never had children. Not that he didn't like them. But he was always so busy being the symbol of peace. And here was one of the next possible symbols telling him he would give up training with them if asked. In the same breath telling him that this would drive him to new heights. Izuku knows so much pain. The abuse, his grandfather's death, his mother's death, and now Robin's own death. All Might closed his eyes in contemplation. He would have to talk to Nezu. There were dorms in the U.A. but would a child be allowed? What about childcare? He saw the fire in Izuku's eyes when he talked about being a better hero. He believed it, and he felt it in his bones. It may be too late for All Might to have any of that. But he couldn't take that from Izuku.
Izuku could hardly breathe. It felt like hours as he waited for All Might or Melissa to say anything. He couldn't look at his mentor. Afraid of what would be displayed. Instead, he focused on Inari. Smiling at her and making faces, to which sometimes he was rewarded with giggles, smiles, and claps.
Izuku. Said All Might, finally breaking the silence. Izuku winced a little bit, expecting to receive bad news. After all, Mr. Yagi had never called him Izuku before. It was always Young Midoriya.
I will not ask you to give up training with us. We will have to talk to Nezu about this situation. But I want you to know you are not alone, Izuku. Me and Melissa will help you through this the best we can. We may not know much about children. But I have the financial resources to ensure you are stable and Inari will want for nothing. Said All Might.
Uncle Yagi, I do not think that you will really need to help Izuku with money. Said Melissa.
What do you mean Melissa? Asked Yagi.
So you do not know how Izuku is? Asked Melissa and she looked at Izuku with a questioning look.
Hmm well it had not ever come up before. Said Izuku.
What do you mean? Asked Yagi.
Hmm well I am the new owner of Vegapunk Industry. My grandfather is the late Vegapunk. Said Izuku. After he said that it took All Might some time to realize what Izuku just said. Once it had sunk in he did a spit take and started to coff.
Did you just say that you are the new owner of Vegapunk Industry and you are the grandson of thy Vegapunk? Asked Yagi.
Yep that is right. Why is it so surprising that I am the grandson of Vegapunk and the owner of Vegapunk Industry? Asked Izuku.
You know that Vegapunk was the smartest person in the world when he was alive. Plus the Vegapunk Industry to my knowledge is approaching a multi trillion dollar company. Said Melissa.
Well it is actually worth about 10 trillion dollars now. Plus it is one of the biggest support items makers. It also makes other things as well. Said Izuku.
After Izuku said that Melissa and All Might passed out. Izuku just blinked at them then he looked at Inari.
Well it seems like we are the only two awake right now. Plus it also seems like you're falling asleep. Said Izuku.
After a few minutes had passed since both Melissa and All Might had passed out. Inari had fallen asleep only a minute after the two passed out. So Izuku took her to her crib so she could sleep. When he did that he grabbed an old baby monitor that his mom had when he was little. He grabbed it just in case he did not hear Inari wake up with his enhanced hearing. When it had been about five minutes since they had passed out Izuku was getting annoyed. So he went to grab some ice cold water. Once he had the ice cold water he went over to them and splashed it on them. After the ice cold water hit them they both shot off gasping for air.
What was that for? Asked Melissa.
Well you two had been out for about 5 or so minutes. It was getting annoying. So I decided to splash you two with some water. Said Izuku.
Well I think that me and Melissa need to leave. So you can take care of your daughter. Said Yagi.
Well I was wondering if I could stay with Izuku from now on? Asked Melissa.
Well if it is fine with young Izuku then it is fine with me. Said Yagi.
Is it fine with you? If I stay with you? Asked Melissa.
Hmm well if you do stay with then I would like it if you would help with Inari. But we may be moving to my grandfather's old house. Because this is not the best place to raise a kid. Said Izuku.
I would love to help with little Inari. Said Melissa.
Well then we will need to get your things from my house. So you have some clothes and whatever you want to have. Said Yagi.
Ok uncle Yagi. Said Melissa and gave All Might a hug. Then she gave Izuku a hug as well. But when Melissa gave Izuku a hug he started to break down. After a long and exhausting day. Melissa kept hugging him and Yagi joined in the hug.
Oh could I also possibly put you two down as Inari's Gardens down. Just in case something happens to me? Asked Izuku.
We would love to Izu. Said Melissa.
Yes we would be happy to. Said Yagi.
All Might and Melissa left shortly after. Izuku made his way back to the couch and sat there numbly, emotionally exhausted, physically exhausted. It was just a numbing sensation that took over his body as he sat there in silence. He didn't even realize that he had fallen asleep sitting up.
He was startled awake by his phone ringing. He needed to figure out the time. He saw it was Itsuka. His heart fell into his stomach.
Fuck I forgot about Itsuka. Thought Izuku.
Hi, Itsu. Said Izuku; at any other time in his life. He would have been overjoyed to hear from his best friend.
Itsuka knew something was wrong. Because of his voice told her something terrible had happened. However she hoped that she was wrong about what it was.
Oh god, Izuku no, no, no. Please tell me that everything's ok? Asked Itsuka.
I'm sorry, Itsu. But I can't. That would be a lie. Said Izuku.
What's going on? Come on, I need you to answer me. Said Itsuka.
Izuku took a deep breath. So he could prepare himself for what he was going to say.
I'm sorry, Itsu. Robin is dead. She was killed in the crossfire between some heroes and villains. Said Izuku and he could hear her break. All he could hear was Itsuka sobbing on the other side of the line. But he had not finished yet. So he continued speaking. However his voice started to break as well. Itsu, that's not all.
