Professor Murphy pointed at the chair across the desk and said to Amelia Clarke, "Have a seat."
"Thank you." Amelia sat down, feeling bewildered inside; Professor Murphy's demeanor did not seem to be that of chastising a student who had made a mistake.
Unable to figure out Professor Murphy's intentions, Amelia lowered her eyes and took on a posture of being open to instruction.
Professor Murphy picked up his teacup, sipped the tea, and cleared his throat before saying, "How is your family doing lately?"
This question made Amelia feel even more confused, and she sensed that Professor Murphy had something he wanted to say.
After thinking for a moment, she replied, "They are all quite well, Professor Murphy. If you have something to say, please feel free to speak directly."
