The old man's trusting gaze was fixed on her. She, not being one skilled at lying, was at a loss for words.

"Never mind, I'll tell you the truth!" Christoper Cooper stepped forward to help Vera out. "That boy drank a bit last night, got caught driving, and is still being held. We're going to see Lucille to figure something out."
The old man, a veteran of the business world, was very perceptive and knew they couldn't fool him. That's why Christoper Cooper had come up with this excuse.
