Shirley Grant, flustered and upset, reached out and slapped him.
These days the weather was getting hotter and Alan Morgan was only wearing a shirt today.
So that slap landed right on Alan Morgan's arm with a loud crack.

Shirley froze there, saw Alan Morgan's expression change, and immediately reached out to rub his arm.

She hadn't meant to use that much force; just hearing that sound, she knew it must have hurt.

Seeing how panicked she was, Alan Morgan spoke right away, trying his best to calm her.
"It doesn't hurt anymore, it doesn't hurt."
Alan Morgan reached out, grabbed both her hands, then pulled her along as he kept walking forward.
"I told Gerry Peary I'd be here in one minute, don't hold me up, okay?"
Alan Morgan quickly switched the topic.
As soon as she heard Gerry Peary's name, Shirley really did get distracted.
She hadn't seen Gerry Peary for so long, had he changed at all?
Had he gotten taller?
