...
The match had officially reached its breaking point. Five on five. Half of the competitors were gone, leaving a grueling, exhausted war of attrition in their wake. The early adrenaline had faded, replaced by the grim, punishing reality of elimination tag team wrestling. Barrett pointed a finger directly at John Cena, gesturing for the franchise player to step inside. The crowd began a dueling chant, desperate for a hero to turn the tide..
The crowd began a dueling chant, desperate for a hero to turn the tide.
"LET'S GO CENA!"
"CENA SUCKS!"
Cena didn't hesitate. He slapped his hands together, his face carved with determination, and stepped through the ropes. He cracked his knuckles, ready to trade heavy blows with the leader of the Nexus.
But as Cena charged forward, Barrett simply flashed a mockingly arrogant smile, turned on his heel, and slapped the outstretched hand of David Otunga.
A loud chorus of boos washed over the Capital One Arena as Barrett safely slipped out of the ring, letting the Harvard graduate take his place.
"Coward!" Lawler shouted from the desk. "Wade Barrett called Cena out, and the second John stepped into the ring, Barrett ran for the hills!"
"It's not cowardice, King, it's called strategy," JBL countered, adjusting his headset. "Barrett is the general. You don't put the general on the front lines when you have fresh infantry ready to wear the enemy down."
Otunga stepped up, flexing his heavily muscled arms. He threw a wild right hook, but Cena easily ducked underneath it. The franchise player was running on pure frustration. He caught Otunga around the waist, lifting him up and slamming him down with a brutal gutwrench suplex. Cena didn't stop there. He dragged Otunga to his feet, whipped him hard into the corner, and followed up with a running bulldog that planted Otunga face first into the canvas.
Cena raised his hand, signaling the end. He waited for Otunga to stagger to his feet, stepped in, and hoisted the A Lister onto his broad shoulders. With a fierce yell, Cena drove him down with a thunderous Attitude Adjustment.
He hooked the leg.
One! Two! Three!
David Otunga has been eliminated.
"Just like that, Cena evens the score!" Cole cheered loudly as the crowd roared. "Team RAW is back in control! It is five on four!"
The momentum was shifting, but the Nexus refused to give Team RAW a moment to breathe. The second the referee's hand hit the three count, Justin Gabriel sprang off the top turnbuckle with a missile dropkick that caught Cena squarely in the chest, sending him rolling toward his own corner.
Cena reached out, tagging in Jey Uso.
Jey hit the ring with a burst of fiery energy, throwing rapid fire rights and lefts that backed the South African high flyer against the ropes. Jey whipped Gabriel across the ring, leaping up to deliver a beautiful Samoan drop. He went for the cover, but Gabriel kicked out at two.
Jey dragged Gabriel toward the corner, aiming to set up a top rope splash, but Gabriel blindly reached out and slapped Ryback's boot.
Jey turned around, realizing too late that the legal man had changed. Ryback stormed through the ropes like a runaway freight train. Jey tried to use his speed, throwing a superkick, but Ryback caught the boot in mid air. The massive enforcer let out a guttural roar, shoving Jey backward before leveling him with a devastating Meat Hook clothesline that nearly took the World Tag Team Champion's head off.
Ryback hauled a lifeless Jey onto his shoulders, marching around the ring to mock the fans, before planting him with Shell Shocked.
One! Two! Three!
Jey Uso has been eliminated.
"The power of Ryback is just too much!" JBL gloated. "He is picking the bones of Team RAW! We are tied up again, four on four!"
Kofi Kingston didn't wait for the referee's signal. He launched himself over the top rope with a springboard clothesline, knocking Ryback off his feet. Kofi was a blur of motion, hitting a flurry of kicks to keep the big man grounded. Ryback stumbled toward his corner, desperately tagging Justin Gabriel back in.
The match instantly transformed into a dizzying aerial showcase. Kofi and Gabriel traded lightning fast arm drags, headscissors, and hurricanranas. The action was so fast it was hard to call. Gabriel tried to hit a sweeping kick, but Kofi backflipped out of the way, bouncing off the ropes and connecting with a sharp Trouble in Paradise!
Gabriel ducked at the last possible second. The momentum carried Kofi toward the ropes, where Curtis Axel, standing on the apron, grabbed Kofi's tights and pulled him out of the ring.
The brawl instantly spilled to the outside. Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler jumped down to defend their partner, clashing with Axel and Ryback. The referee began a frantic ten count, warning them to return to the ring.
Gabriel launched himself over the top rope, crashing into Kofi and Ziggler near the barricade. The action spilled out into the audience, with Ziggler and Axel trading punches in the front row, throwing each other into empty folding chairs.
"This match is breaking down again!" Cole yelled, standing up. "These men hate each other! They don't care about the rules, they just want to inflict pain!"
Kofi and Gabriel fought their way back to the ringside area, throwing stiff forearms. Kofi shoved Gabriel hard against the steel steps, rolled into the ring to break the count, and waited for Gabriel to follow.
As Gabriel slid under the bottom rope, Kofi backed up, lining up a second attempt at Trouble in Paradise. He leaped into the air, spinning with pinpoint accuracy.
But Gabriel had blind tagged Curtis Axel right before re entering the ring.
As Kofi spun, Gabriel dropped to the mat. Axel rushed in from the blind side, catching Kofi around the neck as he landed. With a swift, twisting motion, Axel planted Kofi into the canvas with a devastating swinging neckbreaker.
Axel hooked the leg, keeping Kofi's shoulders pinned tightly to the mat.
One! Two! Three!
Kofi Kingston has been eliminated.
"The Nexus strikes again!" Lawler groaned, holding his head. "They are using the blind tags perfectly! Team RAW is falling apart!"
"It is four against three in favor of Wade Barrett's army!" Cole reported, the panic evident in his voice. "John Cena, Drew McIntyre, and Dolph Ziggler are the only men left for Team RAW!"
Cena rushed the ring, throwing his body into Axel. He hit a pair of flying shoulder tackles, followed by a spinning side slam. Cena raised his hand, the crowd erupting as he hit the ropes and delivered the Five Knuckle Shuffle.
Axel stumbled to his feet, and Cena lifted him up for the Attitude Adjustment. But Axel frantically kicked his legs, grabbing the top rope to break free, and tagged Justin Gabriel back in.
Gabriel tried to capitalize on Cena's momentary distraction, springboarding off the top rope for a flying crossbody. Cena caught him in mid air!
The sheer strength of the franchise player was on full display as he rolled through, using Gabriel's own momentum to hoist the high flyer onto his shoulders.
Cena hit a flawless Attitude Adjustment, planting Gabriel into the center of the ring.
One! Two! Three!
Justin Gabriel has been eliminated.
The Capital One Arena shook with cheers.
"Cena evens it up!" Cole yelled triumphantly. "Three on three! Cena, McIntyre, and Ziggler against Barrett, Ryback, and Axel!"
Ryback immediately stepped over the top rope, his eyes locked on Cena. The two heavyweights met in the center of the ring, trading heavy, exhausting blows. Sweat poured from their faces. Cena threw a right hand, Ryback returned fire with a heavy forearm. Cena ducked a clothesline, hit the ropes, and launched his body at the big man, but Ryback caught him, hitting a brutal spinebuster that rattled Cena's teeth.
Ryback backed into the corner, setting up for the Meat Hook.
As Cena staggered to his feet, Ryback charged. But Cena sidestepped the clothesline, grabbed Ryback's arm, and impressively hoisted the 290 pound monster onto his shoulders!
The crowd went absolutely frantic. If Cena hit the AA on Ryback, the Nexus would lose their biggest weapon.
Cena struggled under the immense weight, his knees shaking. As he prepared to drive Ryback down, Wade Barrett reached out from the apron and slapped Ryback's back, making the blind tag.
Cena's knee buckled slightly, allowing Ryback to slip off his shoulders. Ryback shoved Cena hard into the ropes. As Cena rebounded, Ryback hit him with a heavy shoulder block, dropping the franchise player to his knees.
Cena was dazed. He slowly looked up, trying to find his bearings.
Wade Barrett was already waiting.
The Nexus leader stepped forward, his red elbow pad pulled down, and swung his arm with maximum velocity. The Bull Hammer connected flush with Cena's temple.
The sound was sickening. Cena collapsed backward, his eyes glazed over, completely out cold.
Barrett placed a single, arrogant boot on Cena's chest.
One! Two! Three!
John Cena has been eliminated.
A collective, horrified gasp sucked the air right out of the arena.
"No..." Lawler whispered. "John Cena is gone. The franchise player has been eliminated."
"Wade Barrett just took out the heart and soul of Monday Night RAW!" Cole yelled, slamming his pen on the desk. "It is now a three on two advantage for the Nexus! Wade Barrett, Ryback, and Curtis Axel against Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler!"
"This is exactly what I've been saying!" JBL crowed, clapping his hands together. "Barrett is outsmarting them at every single turn! The Nexus is inevitable!"
Dolph Ziggler leaped over the top rope, his blonde hair plastered to his face with sweat, his eyes wild with a desperate need for revenge. He didn't care about the numbers. He charged Barrett, taking the Englishman down with a louthes press and raining down heavy punches.
Barrett scrambled to his feet, but Ziggler hit a beautiful leaping DDT that spiked Barrett into the mat.
Ziggler hooked the leg, but Ryback rushed in, violently kicking Ziggler in the ribs to break the pin.
The match lost all semblance of order once again. Drew McIntyre ducked under the ropes, charging at Ryback. The Scottish Psychopath threw a flurry of stiff European uppercuts, backing the big man into the corner.
Ziggler, clutching his ribs, saw Axel on the outside. He slid under the ropes, tackling Axel into the barricade. The brawl on the outside was vicious. Ryback, fighting off McIntyre, rolled out of the ring to help his teammate.
Ryback grabbed Ziggler by the hair, hauling him up. Ziggler tried to fight back, throwing a superkick, but Ryback caught his leg. With terrifying ease, Ryback lifted Ziggler into a powerbomb position.
"Watch out!" Cole screamed as Ryback took three aggressive steps forward.
Ryback powerbombed Dolph Ziggler spine-first into the unforgiving steel ring post. The dull thud of bone against metal was followed by Ziggler collapsing limply to the ringside floor, completely unresponsive.
"Good god, he just broke Ziggler in half!" Lawler yelled in horror. "Get a doctor out there!"
Ryback wasn't finished. He picked Ziggler's lifeless body up and snake eyed him directly onto the top of the steel ring steps. Ziggler slid to the floor, a crumpled, unconscious mess.
Inside the ring, Drew McIntyre was now trapped.
He was the legal man, and with Ziggler incapacitated on the outside, the match was effectively a three on one handicap nightmare.
Curtis Axel slid back into the ring, tagging himself in. Drew tried to fight him off, hitting a heavy right hand, but Barrett quickly tagged in, delivering a stiff kick to the back of Drew's knees.
For the next five minutes, the Capital One Arena was forced to watch a systematic, brutal mugging. Barrett, Ryback, and Axel utilized quick tags, keeping a fresh man in the ring at all times, slowly dismantling the United States Champion. Axel hit a beautiful dropkick. Ryback delivered a running powerslam. Barrett hit a series of heavy knee strikes to Drew's ribs while he was trapped in the ropes.
"This is hard to watch," Cole admitted, his voice full of sympathy. "Drew McIntyre is showing incredible heart, but nobody can survive a three on one assault from men this dangerous."
"He's tough, but he's not superhuman," JBL said. "The Nexus is breaking his will."
Axel tagged in, dragging a battered Drew to his feet. Axel hooked Drew's neck, looking to hit his twisting neckbreaker to finish the job.
But as Axel spun, Drew's survival instinct flared. The Scottish Psychopath pushed Axel away, bouncing off the ropes. Axel charged back, but Drew ducked a clothesline, hooked Axel's arms, and delivered a desperate, beautiful Future Shock DDT!
The crowd erupted, desperate for a comeback.
Drew didn't go for the pin. He saw Ryback climbing through the ropes to interfere. Drew pushed himself up, letting out a primal, exhausted roar. As Ryback charged, Drew launched himself forward, delivering a sickening Glasgow Kiss headbutt that sent the big man tumbling back down to the arena floor!
Drew turned around, his eyes locking onto Curtis Axel, who was slowly staggering to his feet.
Drew backed into the corner. He slapped his thigh, the crowd roaring in anticipation. Axel turned around, completely dazed.
Drew sprinted forward and delivered a devastating Claymore Kick that practically took Axel's head off his shoulders.
Drew collapsed onto Axel's chest, hooking the leg tightly.
One! Two! Three!
Curtis Axel has been eliminated.
The crowd blew the roof off the building!
"He did it!" Cole screamed, jumping up and down. "Drew McIntyre just eliminated Curtis Axel! The odds are shrinking! It's two on two!"
But the math was a cruel illusion. Dolph Ziggler was still lying completely unconscious on the ringside floor, surrounded by concerned medical personnel. In the ring, it was still a desperate handicap situation.
Drew lay on his back, gasping for air, absolutely drained of every ounce of his energy. He had survived the beatdown, and he had scored a massive elimination, but he was running on empty.
Slowly, agonizingly, Drew used the ropes to pull himself to his knees, and then to his feet. He wiped the sweat from his eyes, turning around to face the center of the ring.
Wade Barrett was already there.
The Nexus leader had stepped through the ropes the absolute second the referee signaled the elimination. Barrett didn't wait for Drew to find his balance.
As Drew turned, Barrett stepped forward, swinging his red padded elbow with terrifying, homicidal force.
The Bull Hammer connected perfectly with the point of Drew's jaw.
Drew's eyes rolled back into his head. The United States Champion fell backward, crashing to the canvas like a felled tree, completely dead to the world.
Barrett didn't smile. He coldly placed his boot squarely on Drew's chest, staring directly into the hard camera.
The referee dropped to the mat.
One! Two! Three!
Drew McIntyre has been eliminated.
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over Washington D.C.
"It's over," Lawler whispered, his voice trembling. "Drew is gone."
"Wade Barrett has executed his plan to absolute perfection," JBL noted, a dark reverence in his tone. "He let Axel take the damage, and he stepped in for the kill shot."
Inside the ring, Wade Barrett stood tall, fixing his wrist tape. Ryback slowly slid under the bottom rope, joining his leader. The two massive, uninjured members of the Nexus looked out at the ringside floor.
The camera panned down.
Dolph Ziggler was still lying on the thin protective mats, a doctor shining a small flashlight into his unresponsive eyes.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the reality of this situation is grim," Cole said, his voice heavy with dread. "It is officially two on one. Wade Barrett and Ryback are the legal men for the Nexus. And the only man left for Team RAW is Dolph Ziggler... who hasn't moved a muscle in over five minutes."
The broadcast cut back to the ring, where Barrett and Ryback simply stood by the ropes, looking down at the broken body of the Showoff, waiting for the referee to start counting him out or for the doctor to stop the match. The survival of the RAW locker room rested entirely on the shoulders of an unconscious man.
