Anika Bell found the first sticker on a soup lid.
The size scared her first.
A thumb could cover the sticker. Steam could soften it. Kitchen noise could carry it past someone trying to help after patience had already been scraped thin.
The kitchen had become a room of hands and rules. Ladles stayed on the left. Clean cups stayed upside down. Phones stayed in the gray tray by the door unless Waddell cleared them. Nobody said Bone Half near the serving window because the serving window had ears even when no camera pointed at it.
Anika had learned all of that in one hour.
She hated how much a person could learn after one public mistake. The version of her from an hour ago would have peeled the sticker free and tried to solve it alone. That version had almost turned a child into a headline.
The sticker sat beneath a stack of donated lids. Black letters on white paper. A little square code under the printed invitation. It wanted whoever found it to scan and send thanks to B.H.
