Zunoder took the receipt from the lockbox without touching it.
The paper lifted to his hand because the room wanted to hear him. Ty let it happen, and that annoyed JJ more than the receipt did.
"Why are we letting him hold the receipt when he has spent all day trying to turn paper into a leash?" she asked.
Ty kept his eyes on Zunoder. "Because he has been waiting to say something true, and I want the true part where we can cut around it."
Zunoder smiled with the old face. "You are becoming practical in ways your friends will find alarming."
"I am becoming tired of your easy lies. Use the hard one."
The receipt turned over. The signature line stayed blacked out, but three marks appeared below it. Cart response. B.H. response. Return after correction.
Zunoder placed the marks on the hallway floor like stones across water. The first brightened under repeated calls, the second answered to repeated tasks, and the third lit for repeated return after punishment.
