The glass gave before JJ could finish the call.
The crack across the face panel widened from a hairline to a crooked seam. The mouth behind it opened around the name nobody had spoken, and the receiver mouth opened with it. Every tooth along the broken rank leaned toward the case body as if the face had become the easiest proof in the room.
Ty raised both sickles, and Blue hit his forearm bone with her damaged hand.
"Do not cut the face while the name is inside it," Blue said.
Ty held the strike above the receiver mouth.
"It is climbing out through my face and using the receiver to do it," Ty said.
"That is why it wants the cut from you first," Blue said.
The face behind glass smiled as the name climbed under it.
The skin over the old cheeks tightened. Zunoder's name moved beneath it, leaving the ribs for the throat, then the jaw, then the place under the left eye where a scar Ty remembered from Earth pulled sideways.
