Chapter 99 - Chapter 98: Valak Origin

The sound of a bell rang abruptly.

Before Lucas stood an old, ruinous monastery. The walls and stairs were covered in moss. Through its doorway, only a deep darkness could be seen—a bottomless abyss that seemed to swallow people's hearts.

Beside the monastery was a gloomy cemetery. The ground was filled with crosses meant to ward off evil spirits. Each grave had a bell hung above it, all connected by thin wires. When the wind blew, the bells rang softly.

It was said that the bells were meant for those buried alive—so they could shake the bell inside the coffin and ask for help.

"Did I give the reward to the ghost this time... and also to the monastery?" Lucas raised his eyebrows slightly, surprised. "This is definitely a special ghost."

He narrowed his eyes, recalling the legend of Valak... the Demon Nun.

Long ago, in the shadowed halls of Cârța Monastery, priests obsessed with forbidden knowledge attempted to summon a demon buried deep beneath the structure. In their recklessness, they opened a rift into the abyss. The Vatican intervened swiftly, sending its agents to slaughter the rogue clergy and seal the rift using the Blood of Christ, an ancient relic capable of banishing unholy beings. The catacombs were buried. Silence returned... for a time.

Then came World War II.

Relentless bombings shattered the weakened foundations of the monastery. The seal cracked. The demon, freed once more, emerged into the world. It took the form of a nun—a grotesque mockery of the faith it despised—allowing it to hide among the innocent sisters it would soon corrupt and slaughter.

Years passed. One by one, the nuns fell... until only two remained.

Sister Victoria, in a final act of defiance, hanged herself to prevent Valak from possessing her.

Sister Irene, a novice with a connection to the divine, confronted the demon directly. In a climactic struggle, she unleashed the last of the sacred relic... spitting the Blood of Christ into Valak's face. The demon was scorched and dragged screaming back into the darkness. The catacombs were sealed once more. But its hatred endured.

Now, that demon-eroded monastery, and the terrifying ghost nuns that serve Valak, have arrived in the Blue Sea.

"The level of this ghost is the most dangerous among the ones I've summoned so far," Lucas murmured.

Valak's power was insidious... a viral curse. It spread fast, possessed others, and turned them into loyal ghostly thralls. The more it claimed, the stronger it grew.

And possession was only the beginning.

Valak wielded a horrifying array of powers: Shape-shifting, Hallucinations, Teleportation, Telekinesis, Control over other spirits, and Fear manifestation

In her original appearance, she summoned lightning, hurled victims with a glance, enslaved the dead, and twisted faith into torment.

Lucas understood one thing very clearly.

'This ghost wasn't merely cursed... it was hell-born.'

A voice cut into his thoughts.

Bullet: "Why are you smiling?"

Lucas snapped back to the present and looked at Bullet. "Was I smiling?"

Bullet pointed to the corner of Lucas's mouth. "You seemed pleased... I was surprised. What's got you so happy?"

Before Lucas could reply, another voice came from the next cell, accompanied by the clink of chains.

Redfield: "Lucas is a strange one. I bet he thought of something wicked just now. I've always found him annoying. I hate dealing with smart people."

Lucas turned toward the next cell and grinned.

Lucas: "Old Redfield is good at reading people. You're smart too."

That man, Redfield, known as "Red the Aloof", had once destroyed three Marine branches and an allied kingdom of the World Government in the New World. The reason? He was displeased with one of the Marines stationed there.

Redfield: "Come on. If I were smart, I wouldn't be here. Sengoku played it well... I was set up."

He let out a cold laugh, then fell silent.

Lucas didn't argue. But in his heart, he knew: anyone locked in a cell next to Bullet wasn't some ordinary prisoner.

Lucas refocused and poured wine into both his and Bullet's glasses.

Lucas: "If a monastery were to suddenly appear in Mariejois... how do you think the Celestial Dragons would react?"

Bullet paused, caught off guard by the question.

Lucas smiled and raised his glass.

Lucas: "I'm thinking of something big, Bullet. Something that could change the whole game. Are you ready to help me make it real?"
