According to the appraisal, this wooden carving was crafted by the famous Sengoku period daimyo, Honda Tadakatsu.
Honda Tadakatsu was a loyal and fierce warrior of the Tokugawa household.
He was highly renowned—
Known as the Sanhe Flying General, Ghost Hira Jiro, and an unrivaled warrior of old.
He was also known as both flower and fruit, Unrivaled in the Eastern Country.
He was undefeated in his life, surviving 57 battles without a scratch, often praised by the veterans of various forces, and later generations even referred to him as the "Japanese Zhang Fei."
However, it's said that in his later years, Honda Tadakatsu retreated to a life of seclusion and fell in love with wood carving. Unfortunately, he died from an infection caused by tetanus after being accidentally cut by a carving knife.
