Throughout his entire history of fighting in the virtual arena, there were only a select group of people who could match him like this, blow for blow; he wasn't expecting to meet one of them today.
Usually, it's either he overwhelms his opponent through sheer force and dominance, or he gets overwhelmed instead, or sometimes cheated. He has won more matches than he has lost, and he has gained some fame amongst the fans of the virtual arena.
