Chapter 10 - The Golden Crush for Midnight (9)

Becka's kiss burned more than it charmed. Starfania's chest tightened; the gesture felt deliberate, a claim stacked in a full view of her. Becka knew—she had to know—about Starfania's quiet feelings for Daniel, and the kiss was proof she meant to twist the knife. Aeron's jaw clenched as he watched, recognizing the cruelty in Becka's theatrics. His gaze hardened, though he said nothing. Daniel, however, noticed the tension. With an apologetic glance toward Starfania, he rubbed the back of his neck.

" I should explain," he said gently. " Becka…believes I'm her boyfriend. She insists on being around me, but—"

" So you're not dating?" Starfania blurted, unable to stop herself. Daniel shook his head. " No. We're just friends. I just…haven't forced the boundaries without hurting her."

Daniel offered her one last smile. "Well, I hope to see you later."

The words left Starfania caught between hope and heartache.

Then he turned and was gone, leaving her to sort through the storm he left behind. Aeron remained at her side, steady as always.

" Well," he said lightly, " that was…interesting, don't you think?"

A faint grin tugged at his lips—part relief, part attempt to cheer her. Starfania promptly smacked the back of his head. Her glare snuffed out his amusement.

"What? I was kidding!" he protested, rubbing the spot with exaggerated innocence. She sighed, rolling her eyes. "Oh, sure. I totally believe you."

The sarcasm broke the tension, and soon both of them were laughing, the sound carrying away the weight of the moment. Their bond—tested but unshaken—shone though.
