Chapter 9 - Rats

After roughly 10 minutes the rats health had dropped by two thirds or so and it had begun writhing on the ground, taking this opportunity Lance climbed through the broken window with Turt in his arms, trying to be as quiet as possible.

Almost through the broken window Lance's foot caught on a piece of glass and it shattered, unbalancing him and resulting in both him and Turt to go tumbling to the floor of the circular room only a few feet from the writhing rat.

Landing on his back Turt was saved from the brunt of the fall, quickly hopping off Lance's chest Turt stood in-between Lance's recovering body and the rabid rat that had placed its focus onto to the disorientated human.

Still in agony the rat moved towards Lance in hopes of pushing past the ugly skeleton that blocked its food and possibly its salvation from it, if it had food to regenerate the rat wouldn't have to worry about dying to the poison.

Getting within 5ft of Turt the rat hastily lashed out with its dark grey claws against Turts white round skull, which in response he lifted his head and opened his jaw launching a poison pellet directly into the rats face which also allowed Turt to narrowly avoid the attack.

Falling to the ground the Rubble Rat started flailing around from the intense pain it now had to endure due to the large amount of poison in its system, the rat was truly on the verge of death now after its 3rd poison pellet. "Looks like the poison is about to finish it off" Lance thought while recollecting himself and getting to his feet while observing the poisoned rat that had tried to kill him.

"I'm lucky you reacted so fast Turt or else I'd be a goner, try and use one more poison pellet to finish it off, its health is really low after that 3rd shot" Lance asked Turt while moving to better position himself behind Turt and away from the feral Rubble Rat.

Gathering a final pellet in his mouth Turt shot the small projectile at the writhing Rubble Rat that was already on the verge of death, which on impact killed the ferocious beast.

[Quest: Kill Your First Beast, Reward: +25 System Points]

"Wow that's 5x my first quest reward, that's quite a few system points, the only downside is that Turt only has a few poison pellet shots left so I doubt we have many more battles ahead of us tonight" Lance thought somberly.

Moving closer to the corpse, Lance reached out to touch the Rubble Rat and consider whether or not to bring it back for a few spirit crystals. Once his fingertips touched the Rats light brown fur a small text box entered Lance's sight.

[Convert Tier 1 Beast Corpse to System Points]

"While I would love to carry this smelly rat corpse for an hour or two back with me I think I might save myself the trouble and just convert it, next time I need to remember to bring a sack or something, right Turt?" Lance thought while laughing at himself for forgetting to get something to bring the bodies back.

Clicking the prompt to convert the Rubble Rat to System Points the body of the beast swiftly disintegrated away and was absorbed into Lance's body.

[Tier 1 Low-Level Beast Converted: +1 System Point]

"Damn I was hoping it would at least be 5 points, I guess quests are the real way to make points" Lance thought aloud.

Continuing their search throughout the afternoon they couldn't seem to find any other Rubble Rats or beasts at all but in fear of going deeper and biting off more than they could chew they continued to circle the outskirts of the slums.

After half an hour or so Lance noticed a slimy trail in front of himself and Turt, intrigued at the possibility of fighting a slime and bored of just wondering around the dirty slums, Lance picked Turt up and ran forward with him in-between his arms.

Shortly after jogging forward Lance noticed a small clearing in the middle of a couple old decrypt houses, alongside a couple trees and shrubs, the trail that Lance was following also ended randomly at the start of the clearing thoroughly confusing Lance.

"It looks like a couple slimes all met came here but the trails all seem to disappear without a trace at the entrance to the clearing, I wonder what happened, maybe if I go a little further in I can find them" Lance thought while slowing down and setting Turt down so they could walk side by side.

Slowly entering the clearing Lance scanned side to side in hopes of finding a sign of the slimes that he was tracking, walking forward he entered the shade of the trees wondering if maybe the slimes were hiding behind the shrubs.

SLOOSH!

Surveying the field whilst underneath the shade of the trees Lance and Turt were unexpectedly ambushed by 3 slimes, one landing directly on top of Lance's head while the other two landed in front and behind Turt in hopes of blocking his chance of escape.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Lance screamed out as soon as the slimy blob landed on top of his head, instantly drenching his hair and corroding away at it while the slime slowly attempted to encompass his entire head.

Reaching for the slimly blob above him, Lance ripped the slime off the top of his head and glanced over at Turt noticing how the slimes were swiftly cutting of his chance to escape, reaching forward and fighting past the splitting pain in his head from the corrosion, he scooped Turt up and quickly backed away from the trio of slimes and out from under the cover of the shrubbery.

While backing away Lance tried to swiftly scan the beasts to also get a look at how strong they were and if him and Turt would even have a chance of taking them all down.

"Wow these guys are surprisingly weak, if they hadn't gotten the jump on us we could've easily ambushed them" Lance thought while reading over the toxic slimes status and seeing a measly 6 in their health stat.

"Turt shoot at the slime in the front I must get revenge for it dropping on top of my face and for ruining my hair!" Lance shouted encouraging aloud to Turt while setting him back down and backing a few feet away from the battle.

Charging up the poison pellet Turt quickly shot it out towards the leading toxic slime while they slowly inched forward, checking the beasts health once again, Lance was surprised to see that it had only dropped 1 point lower.

"Damn how am I supposed to enact my revenge if Turt can barley damage these disgusting blobs" Lance thought, while scooping up the little turtle once more and turning around to begin walking away.

"There was no way we could've beaten them yet Turt I remember it being mentioned in the bounties that most slimes are 90% immune to physical attacks so its probably for the best to hunt for some new targets and not waste all of your mana on something like petty revenge, at least not today" Lance thought while walking away from the scenic clearing whilst also scratching Turts bony little head.

Following the slime trail back Lance and Turt began searching for more Rubble Rats in the hopes of farming a couple more system points or possibly even bringing a couple back for some spirt crystals.

After a couple hours of searching and allowing Turt to regen some of his mana, Lance and Turt were able to take out 3 more low-tier Rubble Rats which had all been found alone and isolated and they were easily whittled away via poison pellets like the first one.

Not that Rubble Rats were the only beasts they had seen, Lance had encountered a couple more toxic slimes as well but decided to avoid them in fear of wasting more mana again, definitely not in fear of a corrosive slime dropping on top of his head again.

Dragging the 3 battered rat corpse's back by their tail, Lance slowly trekked his way back towards the arena only reaching it after 6pm or so, walking back into the building that he had visited this morning he felt and looked quite different from his prior visit, half of his head had acidic burns on it and there were countless scratches covering Lance and Turt's entire body.

Heading straight towards the nearest clerk Lance had to get in line behind a couple of other simple looking beast tamers that sadly didn't have their pets nearby or they would've been scanned swiftly, surprisingly though the 4 tamers all stepped out of the way for some reason and Lance was able to skip the line.
