Chapter 7 - [7] Practice Match I

The sun hung high in the sky as the second half of the day's training session began. Riku and Izumi returned to the volleyball court, their excitement palpable. Coach Micah gathered the players and announced the plan for the afternoon.

"Alright, everyone, we're going to wrap up today with some 6v6 matches," Coach Micah declared. "But here's the twist: the teams will be chosen randomly."

The players exchanged curious glances, unsure of what to expect. Coach Micah had written down everyone's names on separate pieces of paper and placed them in a hat.

"We'll draw names from this hat to form the teams," he explained. "This way, you'll have a chance to play with different teammates and learn to adapt on the fly."

With that, Coach Micah began drawing names one by one and assigning them to teams. The players waited eagerly, their hearts pounding with anticipation.

"Alright, here are your teams for the first match," Coach Micah announced. "Remember, this is a great opportunity to work on your communication and teamwork."

Riku and Izumi were delighted to discover that they were on the same team for the upcoming 6v6 match. With wide smiles, they exchanged a few words of excitement.

Riku grinned and said, "Isn't that great? We're in the same team!"

Izumi's eyes lit up, and he nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! Yosh, let's go!"

With curiosity piqued, Izumi asked Riku about his preferred position on the court. "So, Riku, which position do you usually play?"

Riku replied proudly, "I play as a wing spiker. It's my favorite position, and I love making those powerful spikes."

Izumi chuckled, still undecided about his position. "I haven't specialized in any position yet, but I'm excited to learn and try different roles."

As they chatted, the two boys set off to find the other players on their team. They were eager to get to know their new teammates and build a sense of camaraderie for the upcoming match.

The match was about to begin, and Izumi's team was the one to start the game with a serve. As the young boy stepped up to serve, his teammates, including Izumi, offered encouraging words, shouting, "Give us a good serve!"

With determination, the server launched the ball into the air and hit it with precision, sending it over the net. It was a tricky serve that forced the opponents' libero to make a quick decision. The libero managed to receive the serve and sent it perfectly to their setter, showcasing their skills.

The setter, in turn, displayed finesse by delivering a well-timed slow set, giving the spiker ample time to adjust to the ball's trajectory. The spiker took advantage of the opportunity and prepared for a powerful spike. As everyone anticipated a strong hit, Izumi had other plans.

In a surprising twist, at the last moment, Izumi altered his spiking style. Instead of a powerful slam, he executed a soft tap on the ball. The ball sailed gracefully over the middle blockers, landing precisely inside the opponent's court. It was a brilliantly executed finesse move by Izumi.

The unexpected play earned Izumi's team their first point of the match, leaving both teams and coaches surprised by the young player's versatility and creativity on the court.

The court was abuzz with amazement and congratulations after Izumi's brilliant play. His teammates and opponents couldn't help but express their admiration:

"Nice kill!"

"Great spike!"

"That spike was awesome!"

The enthusiasm from everyone was palpable. Izumi's unique and clever spike had left a lasting impression on those witnessing the match.

Meanwhile, Coach Endou and Coach Micha were observing the game from the sidelines. Watching Izumi's performance, Micha couldn't contain his excitement and exclaimed, "That play was amazing! It's hard to believe he started playing just a couple of days ago."

Endou nodded in agreement, acknowledging Izumi's exceptional talent. He added, "Miyamura's game sense is brilliant. It's as if he knows exactly what will work in any given situation."

Listening to this, Micha concurred, saying, "It feels like the boy is born to play volleyball. I taught him how to use his knees and arms during receiving this morning, and he's doing it nearly perfectly after just half a day."

Endou agreed wholeheartedly, emphasizing that Izumi's physicality was the only aspect that needed improvement, as in every other department, he displayed remarkable talent and potential. The coaches watched with anticipation, eager to see how Izumi would continue to develop his skills.

The match continued to escalate in intensity, and players on both sides were giving their all. One of the standout moments in the game featured a brilliantly coordinated move by Izumi.

In a well-executed play, Izumi and Riku decided to fake a switch just as the ball was approaching.

They pretended to swap positions but then swiftly reverted to their original spots. This clever maneuver created a momentary confusion among the opponents.

The disruption in their blocking formation gave Izumi's teammate the perfect opportunity to spike through the gap they had created, earning their team a crucial point.

The reaction from the players and spectators was a mix of astonishment and applause. It was a testament to Izumi's quick thinking and adaptability on the court.

The crowd erupted with excitement as Izumi's team celebrated their clever play. Izumi's teammate patted him on the back, saying, "Nice fake, Izumi! That really threw them off!"

Izumi grinned and replied, "Thanks! We need every advantage we can get."

On the opposing side, the players were discussing how to counter such tactics. One of them said, "We have to watch their movements closely and not fall for those tricks again."

Another player added, "Yeah, that fake switch caught us off guard. Let's stay focused."

As the match progressed, Izumi and Riku continued to communicate and strategize. Riku shouted, "Izumi, keep an eye on their setter. He tends to favor the middle spiker."

Izumi nodded and replied, "Got it! I'll try to block his options."

Their teamwork was improving with each rally, and their opponents were finding it increasingly challenging to predict their moves.

Coach Endou and Coach Micha observed the game, impressed by the dedication and growth of their young players. Coach Micha commented, "These kids are learning fast. It's like they've been playing together for a long time."

Coach Endou agreed, saying, "Izumi's adaptability and Riku's experience are a great combination. They're turning into quite the team."

The match continued, and the tension in the gymnasium grew. Both teams were determined to win, making every point hard-fought and thrilling for the spectators.

The first set of the match was reaching its climax. The score was 17-14 Izumi's team on the lead. The gymnasium was filled with anticipation, and everyone was on the edge of their seats.

As the opponents prepared to set the ball, Izumi who noticed the opponent's setter had a habit of setting the ball to the same spiker during crucial moments, whispered to Riku, "Watch the setter! He'll set to their number 8."

Riku nodded, and they both focused on the setter's movements. As expected, the setter made a move to set to their number 8, who was positioned on the left side of the court.

Izumi timed his jump perfectly and managed to intercept the set with a well-timed block. The ball ricocheted back to the opponent's side, and their ace spiker was unable to react in time. It hit the floor—giving Izumi's team a point.

Riku clapped Izumi on the back and said, "That block was amazing, Izumi! You read their play perfectly."

Izumi replied, "Thanks, Riku! We're in this together."

The coaches were equally impressed. Coach Micha remarked, "Izumi's ability to read the game is incredible. He's a natural."

Coach Endou nodded and said, "He's adapting so quickly—it feels unreal. Let's see how he performs next."

As the match continued, Izumi's team continued to showcase their teamwork and resilience. Riku's speed and Izumi's strategic plays were instrumental in securing points and maintaining their lead. The set was a thrilling display of talent and determination, with both teams giving their all to emerge victorious.

In the end, it was Izumi's team that triumphed with a score of 26-24, thanks to their remarkable plays and unwavering teamwork.

The gymnasium echoed with cheers and applause as Izumi's team secured the win in the first set.

Izumi was at the center of the celebration, surrounded by his teammates who were overflowing with praise and excitement.

"Izumi, you're on fire, dude!"

"Yeah, man! It's super hard to believe you started playing just a couple of days ago."

"You were like the MVP of the set!"

The compliments and accolades kept coming, and Izumi couldn't help but blush in response. He had given it his all on the court, and his determination had paid off. His teammates' appreciation meant the world to him.

Coach Micha approached Izumi with a smile and said, "Great job out there, Izumi. Your plays were outstanding."

Izumi replied with a humble nod, feeling a deep sense of fulfillment. The set had been intense and exhilarating, and it was moments like these that made him realize how much he loved playing volleyball.

He had found his place in the world of volleyball, and he couldn't wait to see where his newfound passion would lead him.

After the first match finished, it was now time for a small break before the second set began. The players took a moment to catch their breath, hydrate, and discuss their strategy for the next set.
