Chapter 32 - [Chapter 30]

----

The very next night, the thread pulled tighter.

Not loudly.

Not all at once.

It began with a phone call.

The apartment had been in that familiar evening state where nothing looked organized, but everything somehow belonged. Jiwoo sat on the floor near the low table with homework spread in front of him, though the tabby had already declared one worksheet a bed and refused to move.

Asuka sat on the couch with her laptop open, bandages wrapped neatly over her eyes, one sleeve pulled over her fingers as she typed.

Kayden sat on the armrest.

Not because he wanted to be near them.

Obviously.

He had simply chosen the best tactical position in the room.

The fact that it let him see Jiwoo, Asuka, the front door, the windows, and the kitchen where food might appear was merely efficient.

Jisuk lounged on the couch like he owned it now.

He had come over "because Jiwoo kept bothering him."

Jiwoo had not bothered him.

He had texted once.

Jisuk had arrived within twenty minutes.

Now he sat with one leg crossed, arms folded, acting like he had been forced into enemy territory despite having taken his shoes off at the door and accepted tea from Asuka without complaint.

His phone rang.

The room shifted slightly.

Jisuk glanced at the screen.

"Inhyuk?"

He answered with his usual irritation already loaded.

"What?"

A pause.

His expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

Asuka's fingers stopped typing.

Kayden's eyes opened.

Jiwoo looked up from the floor.

Jisuk sat straighter.

"What do you mean, have I heard from him?"

Another pause.

His brows drew together.

"No. Why would he contact me?"

Jiwoo blinked.

"Who?"

Jisuk held up one hand, listening.

The casual arrogance faded, replaced by something sharper.

Worried, though he would never call it that.

"What?"

Jiwoo's hand tightened around his pencil.

Asuka quietly closed her laptop.

Jisuk's gaze flicked toward Jiwoo, then away.

"Seongha Park has been calling him?"

Another pause.

"He's not answering the Union number either?"

The air in the room went cold.

Not literally.

Asuka did not let it.

But it felt that way.

Jiwoo slowly stood.

"What happened?"

Jisuk ignored him for a moment, listening.

Then clicked his tongue.

"Fine. If I hear anything, I'll call."

He hung up.

Silence followed.

Too thick.

Jiwoo took one step forward.

"Jisuk. What happened?"

Jisuk shoved the phone into his pocket and looked away.

"Tch."

"Jisuk."

"It's Wooin."

Jiwoo's face changed immediately.

Asuka stood.

Kayden's tail stilled.

Jisuk scratched the back of his neck.

"Inhyuk asked if I heard from him. Apparently after he left three hours ago, he has not been answering his phone."

Jiwoo's eyes widened.

"He's not answering?"

"Yeah."

Jisuk's voice came rougher than usual.

"The Union tried contacting him too. Seongha Park has been calling him, but he can't reach him."

Jiwoo was already moving.

He grabbed his jacket from the back of a chair and pulled it on too quickly, almost catching the sleeve wrong.

"I'm going to check on Wooin."

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

Asuka stepped away from the couch.

Jisuk stared at him.

"What? Right now?"

"Yes."

"You don't even know where he is."

"I know some places he might go."

Jiwoo's voice was soft, but his hands were already tightening around the zipper of his jacket.

"He might be in trouble."

Jisuk leaned back, trying to look annoyed rather than concerned.

"What if he's with his girlfriend or something?"

A pause.

Then he added, with complete certainty, "Though there's no way he has one."

Jiwoo frowned.

"Jisuk."

"What? I'm being realistic."

Asuka reached for her own jacket from beside the couch.

"If that were the case, I would be relieved."

Jisuk looked at her.

She slipped one arm into the sleeve, then the other.

"But it does not hurt to check just in case."

Jisuk stared.

Then sighed dramatically, as if the entire world had personally inconvenienced him.

"How annoying."

He stood anyway.

Jiwoo looked at him.

"You're coming?"

Jisuk clicked his tongue.

"Obviously. You'll just run off and get lost."

"I won't get lost."

"You might."

"I know the neighborhood."

"That doesn't mean anything."

Asuka zipped her jacket halfway and turned toward Kayden.

The orange cat was already standing.

His expression had gone flat.

Not sleepy.

Not irritated.

Focused.

Jiwoo looked at him.

Then, without warning, scooped him up.

Kayden froze.

Jisuk stopped.

Asuka paused.

Kayden's entire body stiffened in Jiwoo's arms.

"Jiwoo," Kayden said slowly.

To Jisuk, it came out as an extremely offended meow.

Jisuk raised a brow.

"What are you doing?"

Jiwoo held Kayden carefully against his chest.

"Wouldn't he be able to find Wooin by his scent?"

For one second, even Asuka did not speak.

Then Jisuk looked at Kayden.

Kayden looked at Jisuk.

Jisuk shrugged.

"Maybe?"

Kayden's eye twitched.

He ain't no dog.

How the hell would he do that?

Asuka's mouth pressed together.

Kayden slowly turned his furious gaze toward her.

Do not laugh.

Asuka did not laugh.

Barely.

Jiwoo looked down at Kayden with complete sincerity.

"Can you, Casein Nitrate?"

Kayden's soul left his body.

Jisuk snorted.

"That cat looks pissed."

"He always looks like that," Jiwoo said, still worried.

Kayden's ears flattened.

Asuka gently took her phone from the table and slipped it into her pocket.

"Oppa, he may not track by scent."

Jiwoo blinked.

"Oh."

Kayden's dignity began to recover.

Then Asuka added, "But he does have good instincts."

Kayden stared at her.

That was only slightly better.

Jisuk opened the door.

"Are we going or not?"

Jiwoo nodded quickly.

"Yes."

Asuka turned off the lights, leaving only the small lamp near the kitchen.

The cats gathered near the entrance, sensing motion.

The grey scarred cat rubbed against Asuka's ankle once.

She crouched and touched two fingers lightly to its head.

"We will return."

The cat blinked slowly.

The tabby tried to slip out.

Kayden immediately hissed.

The tabby stopped.

Jisuk stared at him.

"Did that cat just scold the other cat?"

Jiwoo smiled faintly despite his worry.

"Casein Nitrate is very responsible."

Kayden looked like he wanted to commit violence.

Asuka opened the door wider.

They stepped into the night.

The door closed behind them.

And the future, unseen by all except one girl, shifted.

The street outside was cool.

Too cool for the heat Asuka still remembered from her vision.

Broken streetlights.

Smoke.

Flames.

Jiwoo coughing.

The Klein brothers had not appeared yet.

But this was the beginning.

She could feel it.

A thread catching on another thread.

Wooin missing.

Jisuk pretending not to care.

Jiwoo walking faster than his body should have allowed.

Kayden held in his arms, insulted beyond words but too focused to complain properly.

Asuka walked half a step behind Jiwoo.

Close enough to catch him if he stumbled.

Far enough not to cage him.

That distinction hurt more than it should have.

Jisuk shoved both hands into his jacket pockets.

"He probably just forgot to charge his phone."

Jiwoo looked over.

"You think so?"

Jisuk glanced away.

"No."

Jiwoo's face fell.

Jisuk groaned.

"Don't make that face. I'm just saying it's possible."

"You said no."

"I also said possible."

"That's contradictory."

"It's called being realistic."

Asuka's bandaged face turned slightly toward him.

"You are worried."

Jisuk stiffened.

"I'm not."

"You stood up before Oppa finished putting on his jacket."

"That doesn't mean anything."

"You also came with us."

"I said you'd get lost."

"Oppa would not get lost."

"He might."

"You do not believe that."

Jisuk's ears reddened.

"Do you always have to talk like that?"

"Yes."

"Annoying."

Asuka's mouth softened.

Kayden, still trapped in Jiwoo's arms, gave a low sound.

Jisuk glanced down.

"What?"

Kayden stared at him.

Jisuk narrowed his eyes.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

Jiwoo looked at Kayden.

"Maybe he's worried too."

Kayden immediately hissed again.

Meow.

Jiwoo smiled softly.

"You are."

Kayden looked up at him.

Wrong.

Too soft.

Too sincere.

He hated when Jiwoo did that.

Asuka watched from behind them, silent.

Kayden cared.

He could deny it all he wanted.

But he cared.

He cared enough that his body had gone tense the moment Wooin's name was mentioned. Enough that he had not scratched Jiwoo for picking him up like a scent hound. Enough that his gaze kept scanning the street, rooftops, corners, alleys.

Teacher.

Protector.

Cat-shaped disaster.

All three at once.

Jisuk pulled out his phone and called Wooin.

It rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

No answer.

His jaw tightened.

He ended the call and clicked his tongue.

"Still not answering."

Jiwoo's steps quickened.

Asuka reached out and touched the back of his jacket lightly.

"Oppa."

He stopped himself.

Barely.

"Right. Sorry."

"Do not run until we know where."

"I know."

"You were about to run."

"I know."

Jisuk glanced at them.

"You two do this a lot?"

"Yes," Asuka said.

Jiwoo smiled sheepishly.

"She stops me from being reckless."

Kayden scoffed as if saying She tries.

Jiwoo looked down.

"Hm?"

Kayden looked away.

To Jisuk, he merely looked like a grumpy cat refusing eye contact.

Jisuk muttered, "That thing understands too much."

Kayden's eyes sharpened.

Asuka said lightly, "He is wise."

Kayden turned toward her.

Do not.

Asuka continued, "A wise chubby—"

Kayden's aura spiked for half a breath.

Asuka stopped.

Jiwoo blinked.

"Chubby?"

Kayden's glare could have split stone.

Asuka smiled.

"Nothing."

Jisuk frowned.

"I feel like I'm missing something."

"You are," Asuka said.

"Are you going to explain?"

"No."

"Tch."

They kept walking.

The city around them looked ordinary.

Convenience store lights.

A delivery scooter passing at the far intersection.

People moving home from late shifts.

A couple laughing under a streetlamp.

Nothing about it looked like the beginning of a fight.

Nothing about it smelled like smoke.

But Asuka knew better than to trust a quiet street.

Disasters often began politely.

A missed call.

A closed door.

A friend not answering.

Then fire.

She slipped one hand into her jacket pocket and let her fingers brush her phone.

No message from Wooin.

No message from an unknown number.

No future warning strong enough to lock her sight.

Only pressure.

A growing heat beneath the skin of the night.

Unseen by Asuka, unseen by Kayden, unseen by anyone walking under the streetlights, the world had been changing since the moment she was born.

It had happened once before.

In another life.

In another world.

A child born with Six Eyes, Limitless, Time manipulation and future sight, had shifted the balance of power so violently that curses grew stronger in answer.

The world corrected itself.

Or tried to.

A scale did not tolerate one side dropping too low.

The birth of Gojo Haruka had not merely added power to the world.

It had demanded opposition.

Curses sharpened.

Sorcerers awakened earlier.

Hidden things crawled out of old places.

Disaster adjusted its weight.

This world had no curses.

No cursed spirits fattening on fear.

No innate domains waiting beneath human ribs.

But it had awakeners.

Cores.

Force control.

Abilities sleeping in bloodlines, organizations, hidden families, forgotten children.

And Asuka Seo's birth had touched that balance too.

Quietly.

Subtly.

Not enough for anyone to notice all at once.

Not enough for records to immediately show a pattern.

But enough.

A little more power in those who would have been strong.

A slightly sharper growth curve in those who would have awakened anyway.

A hidden child developing fire hotter than expected.

A criminal refining flame faster than he should have.

A young awakener's ability manifesting with a cleaner edge.

The world had felt something impossible arrive and, as worlds often did, answered badly.

Awakeners became somewhat stronger.

The dangerous became a little more dangerous.

Potential tilted.

Not toward fairness.

Toward balance.

Still, none of it was enough.

Not truly.

Not to threaten her.

No matter how the scale tried to adjust, Asuka remained something outside its understanding.

A girl born into this world with power from another.

A blade the balance could not measure.

A flame that had not yet shown its color.

She did not know.

Not yet.

She knew only that the threats seemed to be gathering faster than they should.

That danger found Jiwoo too easily.

That the Klein brothers' flames in her vision had burned hotter than reputation alone suggested.

That something in the night felt as if it were leaning toward her family.

She did not know she was part of why.

Not yet.

"Where would Wooin go?" Jiwoo asked.

Jisuk frowned.

"How should I know?"

Jiwoo looked at him.

Jisuk looked away.

"I don't follow him around."

"But you know more about the awakened world than us."

"That doesn't mean I know his hobbies."

Asuka said, "He may have gone somewhere quiet."

Jiwoo nodded.

"He likes quiet places."

Jisuk scoffed.

"He likes standing around like a ghost."

"Jisuk."

"What? He does."

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

"Asuka."

She looked down slightly.

His voice came only for her and Jiwoo, low enough that Jisuk would hear nothing but a soft meow.

"The Union tried to contact him. If Seongha Park is worried enough to call Shinhwa, this isn't nothing."

Jiwoo's hold tightened around him.

"I know."

Kayden looked toward the alley ahead.

"Don't rush in blindly."

Jiwoo nodded.

"I won't."

Kayden stared.

Jiwoo hesitated.

"I'll try not to."

"Better."

Asuka looked at Jisuk.

"Can you ask Inhyuk for the last place Wooin was seen?"

Jisuk blinked.

Then pulled out his phone.

"I was going to."

"You were not."

"I was."

"You were walking dramatically."

Jisuk glared.

"You're really annoying."

"Yes."

He called Inhyuk again.

The line connected quickly.

Too quickly.

Jisuk's expression tightened.

"Where was Wooin last seen?"

A pause.

He listened.

Then his eyes shifted toward the road ahead.

"Near the old commercial block?"

Jiwoo looked up sharply.

Asuka's head turned.

The old commercial block.

Her vision had shown narrow streets.

Broken lights.

Concrete.

Smoke crawling along the ground.

Jisuk listened for another second.

"Yeah. We're heading there."

He hung up.

Jiwoo swallowed.

"That's close."

Asuka looked in that direction.

"Yes."

Kayden's eyes sharpened.

His body went rigid in Jiwoo's arms.

"Put me down."

Jiwoo blinked.

"Huh?"

"Put me down."

To Jisuk, Kayden meowed sharply.

Jiwoo immediately crouched and set him on the ground.

Kayden landed lightly.

Far too lightly for an ordinary cat.

Jisuk frowned.

"That cat's weirdly athletic."

Kayden ignored him.

He sniffed the air once.

Then looked deeply offended by the fact that he had, technically, done something close to what Jiwoo asked earlier.

Asuka's mouth curved.

Kayden snapped his gaze toward her.

Not a word.

"I said nothing."

"You thought it."

"I did."

Kayden clicked his tongue and faced the dark road.

Jiwoo looked nervous.

"Do you sense anything?"

Kayden's gaze narrowed.

"Faint energy traces. Multiple. Not close enough to identify clearly."

Jisuk looked between them.

"What are you two staring at the cat for?"

Jiwoo froze.

Asuka answered smoothly, "He sometimes reacts to awakened energy."

Jisuk stared.

"To awakened energy."

"Yes."

"A cat."

"Yes."

Jisuk looked down at Kayden.

Kayden looked up at him.

Jisuk's face slowly twisted.

"Of course he does."

Wooin would have said the same thing calmly.

That thought made the humor fade.

Jiwoo started walking again.

This time, faster.

Asuka followed.

Jisuk did not complain.

Kayden moved ahead of them, orange body slipping through patches of shadow, tail low, ears forward.

No longer a household tyrant accepting snacks.

No longer Inhyuk's wise chubby baby.

No longer Casein Nitrate.

For just a moment, even in that ridiculous body, he moved like what he truly was.

A predator.

A top-class awakener.

A teacher looking for a missing student.

Asuka watched him.

Then looked toward the old commercial block.

The night ahead felt warmer.

Not enough for the others to notice.

Enough for her.

A faint heat.

A thread of smoke not yet visible.

A future beginning to become present.

Jiwoo's hand tightened at his side.

Jisuk's wind stirred faintly around his shoulders, his irritation sharpening into readiness.

Asuka lowered her chin slightly.

Behind her bandages, her eyes gleamed.

Not blue to the world.

Not yet.

To the world, she was only Jiwoo Seo's younger sister.

A quiet girl in a jacket.

A little strange.

Maybe fire-type.

Maybe speed-type.

Nothing more.

For now.

The group turned the corner.

And Asuka felt the future settle into place.
