The first thing Kalina realized was her numb body and dulled ears. Around her, the earth had been blown to pieces. What the hell had happened? Was it lightning? The question unfolded in her mind as she tried to locate the enormous red wyvern in the great cloud of dark dust.
"Kal!"
Boom! The world thundered a second time, and Valian's voice cracked. Lightning again? Kal didn't have much time, because then a terrible, total darkness took over her.
The sound of a battle not far away awoke Kalina again. Dawn was near. The night shadows were slowly receding, Kal thought. Another discovery as she tried to maintain her balance because the world was shaking.
"Wait, Kal…" Aslan's voice was barely audible over the ringing in her ears and the terrible chaos raging around them. "Stay down a little longer. Some kind of projectile exploded around you. The red monster went berserk when it saw you lying down, and that's when real chaos broke out. Basilisks started appearing everywhere…"
