Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Second Visit to The Woods

The moon hid behind the clouds at Godolkin University, specifically at The Woods' power room.

Wade floated in the corner of the stairs, his entire body rendered completely transparent; only the faint airflow caused by his breathing could prove his existence. 'Running around naked feels strange. It would be great if I could make my clothes invisible too.'

'Why hasn't anyone come out for so long? Don't tell me they don't work on weekends?'

He stared blankly at the tightly sealed stone wall, knowing that without an induction access card, the mechanism wouldn't slide open, leaving him with no choice but to wait.

'There isn't even an input device. How exactly am I supposed to use the access code that Cate mentioned?'

That brief Mental Control contact with Cate by the lake a few days ago flashed clearly in his mind.

Cate had uneasily conveyed her thoughts: "I want to live freely. I don't want to be coerced into doing things against my will... Shetty takes good care of me, and I don't want to let her down. You understand me, right?"

Wade really couldn't agree with her point of view: "If you think you're doing the right thing, then just do it... Why do you need others to understand?"

Cate was silent for a long time before responding with uneasy thoughts: "Aren't you looking to investigate? I can give you the access code for The Woods laboratory, but whether you can find anything depends on you. If anything happens, it has nothing to do with me."

The metal door disguised as a wall slowly slid open. Wade's train of thought was interrupted as he watched two guards in black uniforms walk out.

"Two consecutive night shifts, I'm really going to drop dead..."

"Be content. Night shifts are much safer. It's the daytime, subduing those psychotic Supes, that's truly dangerous."

Wade floated horizontally above the two, sliding into the door as silently as a hockey puck, without causing a sound.

"What was that?" The fat guard turned back abruptly. "I feel like someone is watching us!"

The thin guard looked around and waved his hand. "Where? You're being paranoid. Let's go."

The door closed completely behind them, and Wade began to move, sticking close to the ceiling.

This area was exactly the Northwest detention room he had previously explored by controlling a fly. The alloy doors only had English letters and numerical codes on them.

Outside Room 1, Wade used airflow as tentacles to perceive the objects inside the room.

In his perception, a young man with scorching hot breath lay on the bed; it must be the same person who had breathed fire to burn the fly earlier.

'With so many rooms, how long would it take to explore them one by one? There should be a corresponding information database.'

Wade flew straight along the corridor, beginning his search.

Two minutes later, he reached the central laboratory.

Inside the room, two researchers in white lab coats were whispering to each other.

The mustachioed researcher pointed at the surveillance screen and tapped the table. "Northwest Room 3 isn't sleeping in the middle of the night; he's started smashing the walls again. Should we release high-sensitivity sound waves to make him behave?"

The female researcher beside him took a small sip of coffee. "Leave him alone. That guy might be experiencing auditory or visual hallucinations again. He'll fall asleep naturally when he's tired."

Wade floated into the ajar laboratory and wandered around inside.

Six gray filing cabinets were arranged against the wall, stacked with piles of thick blue folders labeled: Psychological Analysis and Control, Ability Limit Testing, Pathogen Development Targeting Supes, Genetic Modification and Fusion, and Adaptive Testing in Specific Environments.

'I've found the treasure!' He licked his lips excitedly, itching to immediately flip through the detailed information recorded within.

Wade examined the surveillance cameras on both sides of the room, not daring to act rashly.

If the people in the laboratory discovered the cabinets being opened by an invisible force or the folders flipping through themselves, anyone would know there was an intruder.

After waiting for half an hour, the mustachioed researcher dozed off on the table, and the female researcher left the laboratory with a tissue in her hand.

Wade immediately used airflow to tilt the cameras and wrapped them in two blobs of mist to cover them. Only then did he sit in front of the female researcher's computer and gently move the mouse.

On the desktop, a video folder named "Nirvana" was particularly eye-catching. He muted the computer audio and clicked to view it.

A video titled "NW-03 Plasma Exchange - 1" began to play.

Luke lay on one side of the operating table, with two transparent tubes inserted into his arm, connecting to an oval machine in the center; on the other side lay a slightly immature-looking young man with a square face, who also had two tubes inserted into his arm.

'That person must be Sam, right?' Wade looked at the young man, whose features bore a slight resemblance to Luke's, lost in thought.

In the footage, deep blue blood surged from both their arms into the machine, subsequently splitting into two paths: a red one flowing back into Sam's body, and another pure blue one flowing back into Luke's body.

Cate stood between the two operating tables with a sorrowful expression, holding down Sam's struggling, vein-popping arm with one hand, and pressing her other hand against Luke's forehead.

'So that's how Luke's thermal nuclear ability was strengthened... It seems their blood types are the same, with no rejection reaction.' Wade understood that Cate was using her Mental Control ability to soothe their restless emotions.

There were nine more videos in the list. Just as Wade was about to continue watching, the sound of footsteps—two heavy, one light—approached from outside the door.

He quickly closed the interface, got up from the computer desk, and retreated to the side.

The female researcher pushed the door open and entered, looking up at the ceiling. "Hey, the camera really is tilted? I thought you guys were joking."

"It's not just that; the lens has inexplicably fogged up, too." Two technicians in casual clothes walked in, carrying toolboxes and a ladder. "You don't even have the air conditioning on here. Without a temperature difference or water leaks, where would the fog come from? Strange."

Seeing more people, and with the dozing male researcher now awake, Wade knew there would be no more opportunities if he stayed, so he quickly floated out of the laboratory.

'In the middle of the night. They reacted so quickly? Shouldn't they wait until tomorrow to come for repairs?'

...

Northwest detention corridor, outside Room 3.

Wade hovered in place, invisible fluctuations spreading out to bring the gas inside Sam's room under his control.

The room was only 15 square meters. Enveloped by the airflow, he sensed a human-shaped object breathing steadily, lying on the bed.

'Asleep? Perfect!'

Wade extracted all the oxygen from the room through the gap under the door, leaving only other gases behind, and casually used thick mist to block the camera.

The human-shaped object inside woke up before long, pacing around the room restlessly.

"Go to hell, you damn puppets. How dare you laugh at me!"

Bang, bang—boom, boom!

Muffled sounds of walls and doors being smashed came, accompanied by a few low roars. It continued for 3 minutes before subsiding.

Wade's ears twitched slightly as he looked at both sides of the corridor: 'I need to be quick. The people watching the surveillance must have already discovered the anomaly!'

He drove two streams of airflow, precisely drilling them into the nasal cavity of Sam, who was lying on the ground, and then twisted his palm forcefully.

Two micro-Cyclones immediately formed in Sam's nasal cavity, slowly agitating the capillaries under the thin, delicate mucous membrane.

Beep, beep, beep—

At this moment, an alarm blared from the corridor speakers, and the green indicator light directly above Room 3 turned red.

'Crap, faster!!' Wade's heart tightened as he rotated both hands simultaneously, accelerating the speed of the Cyclones.

Inside the room, Sam's eyelashes trembled violently as he seemed about to wake up. Wade drew out a thin, long stream of blood, as fine as a hair, from the gap under the door and collected it into his palm.

In the corridor, five heavily armed security guards in black, carrying firearms, came running over.

"What kind of trouble is happening in Northwest Room 3 again?"

"I don't know, be careful... That guy is notoriously neurotic."

"The last two unlucky newcomers were literally torn apart by him... Listen up, keep your distance when we go in, and drug him unconscious first."

"Received." "Got it, Captain!"

Wade jumped up on the spot, floating horizontally against the ceiling, looking down at the group of people as the drop of blood was slowly absorbed into his palm.

[Analyzing blood sample... Abilities: Super Jump, Stamina; High-Speed Regeneration; Rage-Induced Power. Added to genetic profile.]

Wade didn't dare to absorb the abilities here, so he floated all the way to the exit door. He was just about to use his airflow tentacles to enter the password on the digital keypad to escape.

'Something's wrong.' Wade felt something was off and immediately stopped. 'What if the password is fake?'

He simply waited there, deciding to wait until 5:00 AM for staff to come and go so he could follow them out.

For the remainder of the time, Wade hovered in the surveillance blind spot at the top of the corridor, observing the chaotic commotion unfolding below.

"Ugh, this guy's room is so stuffy, I can't even breathe!"

"Captain, his complexion doesn't look right. Is he sick?"

The security team cursed as they carried Sam out of the room, discovering his face was purple and he was bleeding from both nostrils. They urgently called for a medical team.

Two staff members pushing a medical cart rushed over.

"Blood oxygen saturation dropped to 80%, carbon dioxide concentration is twice the limit... Acute respiratory failure. Take him to the medical room with us." After a quick examination, the two directed the security team and left in a hurry with the patient.

The technicians arrived shortly after and repeatedly checked the environmental control system: "Oxygen supply is normal, the ventilation system is operating well, and all data is within standard ranges."

A report came through the comms from the surveillance center: "Before the target lost consciousness, the room's camera experienced a brief imaging failure, with 5 minutes of blurred footage."

A middle-aged man with short facial hair and glasses stormed to the door and kicked the alloy gate. "Explain! I want a reasonable explanation! Don't we have an independent oxygen supply and air circulation system? How could this happen?"

The researcher beside him held a tablet, pulling up Sam's physiological file: "His lung capacity is eight times that of a normal person; theoretically, he can hold his breath for over half an hour... unless it was an instantaneous lack of oxygen in a short period."

"The medical team says the rate at which the carbon dioxide concentration in NW-03's body spiked doesn't fit any known pathological model."

"The ventilation system is fine too." The technician checked the control panel, puzzled, and muttered, "Oxygen supply pressure is stable, the carbon dioxide adsorption device is operating well, the ventilation ducts are clear... everything is normal."

Wade listened to the staff below arguing and shifting blame, attempting to explain the anomaly using scientific theories and Supe power malfunctions, only to end up sounding more and more metaphysical.

He covered his mouth with his hand, suppressing his laughter for fear of giving himself away.

Time slipped by unnoticed until 5:00 AM, and the shift-change bell rang on time.

Exhausted staff changed into casual clothes and headed toward the exit. Wade followed silently behind.

When passing the keypad at the exit gate, he casually pressed the six-digit code Cate had given him: 'Let's see if this password is actually correct.' Then, he slipped out.

Beep, beep, beep—

A piercing alarm blared through the entire corridor, and the departing staff looked around in panic or fear.

Bang! Bang!

A second later, two heavy alloy gates slammed down, sealing the exit completely.

Cries of surprise and the sound of orderly running came from behind the door.

Wade immediately floated to the sky above The Woods and charged into the clouds, his heart growing colder: 'That bitch, I knew she had bad intentions. Just wait and see how I deal with you!'
