Gavin Graves indeed encountered trouble.
Upon returning from abroad, he found a tiny black dot on the tip of his right ring finger, like a mole. He thought it was dirt, but it wouldn't wash off no matter how hard he tried.
Later the black dot turned into a black line, the line grew longer and deeper in color, like seeds taking root at the fingertip, branching out from the skin, intertwining and spreading across the entire forearm.
It neither hurt nor itched, but occasionally he couldn't muster any strength, as if he had lost control over half his arm.
The mage said it was a curse that would eventually reach the heart, and at that point, he might die, or something worse than death might happen.
