Hans Geoffrey was stunned, his fingers halting as he flipped through the pages, remaining still for a long time.
Purple Summers watched him silently, waiting for a response.
"Manslaughter..." Hans Geoffrey slowly raised his head and asked her, "Will it still be the death penalty?"
"If convicted, you might be sentenced to twenty years." Purple Summers replied.
After a slight pause, she continued, "Of course, the prosecutor won't easily let us change the charges. I'll strive for a not-guilty defense, but... Hans, sometimes, to be safer, we have to make some concessions."
"I understand..." Hans Geoffrey gave a bitter smile, "I understand everything. You're doing this for my good. Serving twenty years in prison is much better than losing my life..."
Purple Summers pressed her lips together, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Both fell silent.
After a while, Hans Geoffrey asked, "Have you talked to my wife?"
"Yes, she has agreed to testify for you."
