She wouldn't have needed to be deceived emotionally and physically, wouldn't need to be deceived by Eric Candi, or by Philip Shaw, and wouldn't be so utterly alone now.

Philip Shaw slowly lifted his eyes, looking into Ellen Candi's bright eyes, then fell silent again.
