"He..." The maid's voice trailed off, her mouth agape as she stared at the empty patch of carpet. "The boy was here just a second ago! The young master was right here..."
She wringed her hands in utter panic, completely lost on what to do.
Edward lifted a single, dark eyebrow. A faint, exasperated sigh escaped his lips. It seemed his stoic second son was adamantly determined not to recognize him as a father anytime soon.
Stepping into the bedroom, Edward and the maid saw little Zeke standing quietly right beside the massive king-sized bed. His small hands were crossed over his chest, his dark eyes intently checking his mother's sleeping face to ensure she was unharmed.
"Stupid mother," Zeke muttered under his breath, his tone laced with a mixture of annoyance and worry. "To think I was actually out there worrying about you! How could you lower your guard so easily around this man?"
