Chapter 14 - Chapter 14:

The hospital visit was a necessary formality, a precautionary measure ordered by Chief Swan. As I sat on the hospital bed, dressed in a thin hospital gown that did little to fend off the chill of the sterile room, I couldn't help but feel a mixture of annoyance and resignation.

The medical examination had been thorough, from the routine questions about allergies to the poking and prodding that came with any medical check-up. The nurse, a friendly middle-aged woman with a comforting smile, had taken my vitals and asked about any health concerns. I answered her questions as best I could, my thoughts wandering to the events that had brought me to this point.

The door opened, and in walked Charlie Swan, his presence commanding attention. He exchanged a few words with the nurse, who then nodded and exited the room, leaving me alone with the police chief. His expression was a mix of professional scrutiny and something I couldn't quite place – perhaps a flicker of curiosity.

"Everything seems to be in order," Charlie said, his tone casual as he leaned against the wall. "But I wanted to see for myself."

I met his gaze, my own expression guarded. "Are you satisfied now?"

He chuckled, a gruff sound that hinted at a hidden amusement. "Satisfied enough," he replied. "Your recovery from that encounter with the mountain lion was...remarkable."

I shrugged nonchalantly, masking the significance of his observation. "I've been in tough situations before."

Charlie's eyes narrowed slightly, as if he could sense there was more to the story. "You're not from around here, are you?"

I shook my head, deciding to offer a vague but truthful response. "No, I'm not."

He seemed to weigh my words, as if trying to piece together a puzzle. "Well, Warden Schüttmann, you're a mystery, that's for sure. But as long as you don't cause trouble, you're free to go about your business."

I nodded, a sense of relief washing over me. "Thank you."

Charlie pushed away from the wall and headed for the door, his hand on the doorknob. "Just one more thing," he said, glancing back at me. "Take care of yourself, alright? These woods can be unpredictable."

His words held a sincerity that caught me off guard, and for a moment, I saw a glimpse of a man who carried the weight of responsibility for the safety of the town and its inhabitants.

As he left the room, I leaned back against the hospital bed, my thoughts swirling. The encounter with the mountain lion had exposed a fraction of my abilities, abilities that I still struggled to fully comprehend. And now, as I stared at the plain hospital walls, I couldn't shake the feeling that this world held even more secrets – secrets that I was destined to uncover, one way or another.
