"We can't let this break us," Dr. Evans said, his voice low but firm, breaking the silence. He squeezed my shoulder, his touch a grounding force in the midst of the chaos. "We saved two. That's two more than would have made it without us."
I knew he was right, but the elderly man's lifeless eyes haunted me. The feeling of helplessness, of being unable to do more, was a heavy weight in my chest.
"Where are the officers?" I asked, my voice sharper than I intended. My patience was wearing thin, the weight of our failure pressing down on me. "We can't do this alone. We need backup, we need manpower."
Dr. Evans sighed, his face etched with weariness. "I don't know their exact location," he admitted. "The reports were vague, just that they were trying to establish a perimeter in this sector. We'll have to keep an eye out."
