"So," I said, breaking the silence, "how do we test it?" My smile faded, replaced by a focused intensity. "We can't just inject it into someone. We need a controlled experiment."
Before Dr. Merill could answer, my phone rang. The display read "Grand General Hospital." I sighed. Of course.
"It's the hospital," I said, holding up the phone. "It's probably about me not being there."
Dr. Merill frowned. "Answer it. I'll set up the samples to test the antidote." He turned towards the lab bench, his movements precise and efficient.
I took a deep breath and answered the phone. "Dr. Alayna speaking."
The voice on the other end was sharp and impatient. "Dr. Alayna, why haven't you come to the hospital? You're still on probation, and you should be disciplined. You're given permission for only a half-day, and now…" The voice trailed off, laced with annoyance.
