Chapter 142
"Go get some rest, Alayna. You must be so tired. I'll prepare dinner and call you when I'm done."
The words were kind, meant to be comforting, but they felt hollow. And strangely, my mother didn't ask me to help her in the kitchen. Usually, she'd insist, even if it was just to chop vegetables or stir a pot. But tonight, she seemed determined to handle everything herself.
I nodded, grateful for the opportunity to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the living room. "Okay, mother," I said softly. "I'll be in my room."
I made my way upstairs, my mind racing with thoughts and emotions.
As I reached my room, my step stopped.
My father's voice was low and controlled, but I could still hear the distinct note of disapproval in his tone. And then, Lilith's voice, soft and defensive, laced with a hint of defiance.
