Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 : Nighthawks

"If you're interested in this aspect, you might want to consider becoming a low-level Beyonder first. After you've experienced the changes the potions can bring and understand their risks, then you can think about advancing further," Lin Ruo explained thoughtfully.

After a brief pause, Lin Ruo smiled and continued, "I've also mastered a technique called 'acting.' If you're serious about becoming a Beyonder, I can teach you this method. It significantly enhances your ability to assimilate potions and minimizes the chances of losing control."

Lin Ruo had no intention of hiding the acting technique from Klein since he had decided to mentor him. He also knew that Klein would eventually learn about this technique, so it was better to share it openly.

Curious, Klein asked, "What's this acting method?"

Lin Ruo replied with a question, "Are you considering becoming a Beyonder?"

Klein hesitated before responding, "Well... I've been thinking. Considering everything that's happened, joining the Tarot Club and getting involved in these Beyonder events, it seems wiser to gain power than to wait helplessly."

"It's good that you have that awareness," Lin Ruo acknowledged, not surprised by Klein's answer. He continued, "The acting technique is quite simple. You just need to remember these key principles."

"The objective isn't to master or control the potions, but to digest and internalize them through play. The names of the potions are not just labels, they're symbols, images, and keys to assimilation."

"For instance, if you decide to become a Sequence 9 [Hunter], then you must embody the role of a hunter. Hunt, behave like a true hunter. To give you an example from my own Sequence, it's about deception with potions. This is my perspective, but you can take it as advice."

Klein nodded, grasping the concept of acting with potions through Lin Ruo's explanation.

Lin Ruo continued, "Moreover, remember that the core principle of acting with potions is to always remember 'you're just acting.' You can mimic anyone to assimilate the potions, but you must never lose yourself in the process. Failing to do so can accelerate your demise."

Klein was intrigued, almost asking why, but Lin Ruo explained, "Maintaining self-awareness is crucial within the world of Beyonders. Overindulgence in acting can lead to a loss of identity. This initially affects your mental state and can even lead to a loss of control in extreme cases."

Klein processed this information, though he hadn't yet experienced it firsthand. He then took a deep breath, focusing on Lin Ruo's voice as he thanked him earnestly, "Lin Ruo, thank you for sharing this with me."

Lin Ruo waved away his gratitude, saying, "No need for thanks. Consider us fellow travelers on this path. I can't stand by and watch you stumble blindly."

Lin Ruo then added, "One more thing: Be discreet about the acting technique. Whether it's friends or family, it's best not to spread it widely. If it gets out of hand, you might find yourself invited for a 'chat' with the church."

Klein raised an eyebrow, "The church forbids this kind of acting?"

"The church permits members to learn and understand how acting works but restricts its private spread. As for the reasons behind it, even I don't know," Lin Ruo explained with a shrug.

Truthfully, Lin Ruo didn't fully comprehend the church's motivations in this regard, but he chose not to share his speculations with Klein.

Before Klein could ponder further, Lin Ruo asked, "Any more questions?"

"Well... you know Dunn invited me to join the Nighthawks. Do you think I should accept?" Klein inquired.

"I'd recommend joining," Lin Ruo answered swiftly, "Your understanding of the Beyonders is limited, and becoming a member of the Nighthawks could be immensely beneficial. It'll provide comprehensive insights into the world of Beyonders."

"Besides, you're already on the Nighthawks's radar. Instead of being caught unprepared once you advance as a Wild Beyonder, it's wiser to join them proactively and access their resources to become a Beyonder."

Klein was taken aback by Lin Ruo's quick and confident response, jokingly asking, "Are you a Nighthawks representative?"

Klein wasn't entirely serious, but he had to wonder, as most Wild Beyonders weren't fond of official organizations. Lin Ruo's relatively positive view of the Nighthawks stood out.

"I'm not a representative," Lin Ruo denied, though he glanced at the sacred emblem of evernight on his hand, then coughed and admitted, "But I'm not a typical Wild Beyonder either. You could say I'm halfway between a Wild Beyonder and an official Beyonder."

Klein nodded in understanding, appreciating Lin Ruo's perspective. He then carefully weighed the pros and cons of joining the Nighthawks in his mind and finally reached a conclusion, "I've made up my mind. I'll join the Nighthawks."

Lin Ruo felt a sense of relief and glanced at the sky, realizing that the crimson moon had shifted, indicating dawn was approaching.

He remarked, "Should we keep standing here chatting? I don't mind, but it might be awkward to talk to thin air. Also, do you need some sleep? It seems like you've been awake all night!"
